Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by StarM on 9/15/2013 & rated 89 points: Two years since last bottle. Much more approachable on pop & pour, and is still well balanced with enough dark fruit & licorice and less obvious tannins. Very nice. (2297 views)
Tasted by richardhod on 2/10/2013 & rated 93 points: Really good CF, but to me this bottle sings after 48 hours open! Nose of deep red-purple fruits, with some dust. Palate, those deep red fruits come bursting through, sharp redcurrant, cranberries, loganberries, maybe a hint of red cherry. Keen acidity quickly kicks in and adds to the sparkling flavours, staying sharp and alive through a long moutwatering finish with violets and raspberries, with a long aftertaste of the red / dark red fruits. Tannins pretty integrated by now.
Two days ago, an hour after opening, there was a lot more tannin, and stronger flavour, b ut not as subtle or integrated. I recommend cellaring this beauty for 5 years minimum, and maybe 10-20 depending on taste. (3436 views)
Tasted by merryberry on 11/25/2012 & rated 89 points: Purple with a garnet tinge. Nose of cherry cola, earth, and warm oak. Medium bodied, cranberries, blackberries, green peppers, well integrated tannins, mint, smoke, herbs, a bit of heat, and a medium to long slightly tart finish. Not overly vegetal like a Liore CF, and very enjoyable. (2611 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 10/28/2012 & rated 90 points: Drinking very well, oak well-integrated, structure very accessible. Consistent with prior notes. Very similar to coastal Pinot Noir. Cherry, raspberry and spice. Very pretty nose. Finish displays a bit of the oak tannin, plus there is some perplexing heat though this is not a heavy, alcoholic style. Holds it back a little, though not really a flaw. (2805 views)
Tasted by klezman on 9/8/2012: Started off very tight but with half an hour of decanting it was starting to show much better. Toward the end of the bottle, even better with berry and eucalyptus and maybe a touch of bell pepper. Plenty of spice. Excellent. Leave the other one until at least 2015. (3432 views)
Tasted by cmaldoon on 10/3/2011: Not at all what I was expecting from a cab franc. As cabfrancophile noted, this drinks rather like a California Pinot Noir. in that light it is pretty decent. Don't look to this wine for a dense Bordeaux style. (2148 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 9/24/2011 & rated 89 points: Consistent with prior note, though it seems to have rounded out a bit. Med/low acid with mild tannin. Very much in the style of a lush CA Pinot, but with well ripened Franc profile. Very subtle herbal and olive nuances present. Lovely stuff. For me I think it'll be best in the next few years given its balance point. (1973 views)
Tasted by Cabfrancophile on 12/10/2010 & rated 90 points: Mix of earthier tones and new oak on the nose--candied ginger, tobacco, black cherry, violets and cinnamon oil. Fairly linear in flavor with refreshing acidity and moderate tannin. More sweet cherries followed by olive on the palate that finishes with good length. Fairly fruit driven in sum, but with layering of additional nuances. Best part is the aromas here. Certainly not a crime to drink now for youthful exuberance given approachability of structure. As good as this is, I do wonder a bit what it would be like with some Cab S for austere tannins and darker fruit to offset the cherry veering to the candied side and/or Merlot to broaden the mid-palate. (2469 views)
Tasted by richardhod on 11/17/2010 & rated 96 points: this is an amazing wine. Will age for years, if not decades!

Right now:
Vegetal nose: like a field, smells of Spring.
Remarkable front, olives, redcurrants. a little alcohol up the nose. I said little more because I loved it so much. It had so much more going on in the mid-palate than the (07 Rasmussen Napa Cab), very fresh red fruit, complex.. mmmmmmm, and not short, although the cab of course had more weight and back end but without that amazing talkative middle. (3493 views)
Tasted by Krugsters on 10/14/2010: Lovely nose, strong blueberry, ripe, lush fruit. (2509 views)
Tasted by merryberry on 7/21/2010 & rated 89 points: Dark brown red. Raspberry and almond nose. Pepper, cedar, blackberry, and a tasty dry finish. Very good. (1198 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 4/11/2010 & rated 88 points: Vintners Wine Market (Fort Mason, San Francisco): Very nice nose with lots of blackberry and especially blueberry. Good palate, good structure. Very nice wine. (3404 views)

Kent Rasmussen Winery

Founded: 1986
Owner: Kent Rasmussen
Location: St. Helena, CA

Since its modest beginnings, the Kent Rasmussen Winery has evolved into one of the most important producers in the Napa region. The winery outgrew its tractor shed barrel room on Cuttings Wharf Road in the Napa Carneros long ago. In 1995, Kent and Celia established a new winemaking facility in a turn of the century slaughterhouse, on the Silverado Trail in St. Helena. Refined over the years, it now houses business offices, an oenology lab and lab tasting room, a wine library and upgraded production equipment. The modern crusher, press, tanks, catwalks, refrigeration systems, pumps, forklift and fruit sorter have greatly enhanced winemaking options. Grapes are either estate grown or under long term contract with reliable growers.

Production: 100 cases

Originally intended for use as a blending component in our Cabernet Sauvignon, our 2007 Esoterica Cabernet Franc turned out to be so luscious and captivating that we were compelled to heed its absolute insistence that it be bottled separately. We are awfully glad that we were attentive to its undeniable right to be the star of its own show. This Cabernet Franc features the felicitous meeting of the seductive power of 100% Mt. Veeder (Napa County) fruit with fine French oak to produce a provocative and substantial wine of great depth and weight. The wine is a memorable example of how intensely pleasing this variety can be when allowed to stand on its own merits. Dark-fruited aromas and flavors of black plum, black cherry and wild blackberry abound, underlain by a solid core of tannin that ensures its age-worthiness and the promise of considerable reward for the patient wine drinker who can resist its current allure. Try this with your holiday lamb, a grilled porterhouse with blue cheese or mushroom reduction, or a beautiful cheese tray.

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wines & Vines article

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
