Much more approachable on pop & pour, and is still well balanced with enough dark fruit & licorice and less obvious tannins. Very nice. Palate, those deep red fruits come bursting through, sharp redcurrant, cranberries, loganberries, maybe a hint of red cherry. Keen acidity quickly kicks in and adds to the sparkling flavours, staying sharp and alive through a long moutwatering finish with violets and raspberries, with a long aftertaste of the red / dark red fruits. Tannins pretty integrated by now.
Two days ago, an hour after opening, there was a lot more tannin, and stronger flavour, b ut not as subtle or integrated. Nose of cherry cola, earth, and warm oak. Medium bodied, cranberries, blackberries, green peppers, well integrated tannins, mint, smoke, herbs, a bit of heat, and a medium to long slightly tart finish. Not overly vegetal like a Liore CF, and very enjoyable. Fairly linear in flavor with refreshing acidity and moderate tannin. More sweet cherries followed by olive on the palate that finishes with good length. Fairly fruit driven in sum, but with layering of additional nuances. Best part is the aromas here. Certainly not a crime to drink now for youthful exuberance given approachability of structure. As good as this is, I do wonder a bit what it would be like with some Cab S for austere tannins and darker fruit to offset the cherry veering to the candied side and/or Merlot to broaden the mid-palate. Right now:
Vegetal nose: like a field, smells of Spring.
Remarkable front, olives, redcurrants. a little alcohol up the nose. I said little more because I loved it so much. It had so much more going on in the mid-palate than the (07 Rasmussen Napa Cab), very fresh red fruit, complex.. mmmmmmm, and not short, although the cab of course had more weight and back end but without that amazing talkative middle. Since its modest beginnings, the Kent Rasmussen Winery has evolved into one of the most important producers in the Napa region. The winery outgrew its tractor shed barrel room on Cuttings Wharf Road in the Napa Carneros long ago. In 1995, Kent and Celia established a new winemaking facility in a turn of the century slaughterhouse, on the Silverado Trail in St. Helena. Refined over the years, it now houses business offices, an oenology lab and lab tasting room, a wine library and upgraded production equipment. The modern crusher, press, tanks, catwalks, refrigeration systems, pumps, forklift and fruit sorter have greatly enhanced winemaking options. Originally intended for use as a blending component in our Cabernet Sauvignon, our 2007 Esoterica Cabernet Franc turned out to be so luscious and captivating that we were compelled to heed its absolute insistence that it be bottled separately. We are awfully glad that we were attentive to its undeniable right to be the star of its own show. This Cabernet Franc features the felicitous meeting of the seductive power of 100% Mt. Veeder (Napa County) fruit with fine French oak to produce a provocative and substantial wine of great depth and weight. The wine is a memorable example of how intensely pleasing this variety can be when allowed to stand on its own merits. Dark-fruited aromas and flavors of black plum, black cherry and wild blackberry abound, underlain by a solid core of tannin that ensures its age-worthiness and the promise of considerable reward for the patient wine drinker who can resist its current allure.
