Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 87 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by HWgeek on 3/28/2020 & rated 87 points: Literally found an uncataloged bottle, must of miscounted when racking this wine. Lost most of its bigger floral notes, but wasn't one dimensional or just an alcohol bomb. Nose had some oak and some subtle berry. Palate had a mild red wine flavor with some tartness (cherry?), currant and a bit of cola, with a moderate smooth finish. (1101 views)
Tasted by JRoman23 on 11/23/2017 & rated 89 points: Def passed its prime but you could tell it was nice (2130 views)
Tasted by karaseke on 11/12/2017 & rated 86 points: Still enjoyable and drinkable, with sufficient fruit, but fading (2055 views)
Tasted by ChipGreen on 7/25/2017: PnP at a local Italian restaurant. Dusty cherry and plum nose. Black cherry, currant and powdered mocha palate. Pairing with Bolognese sauce brought out an allspice component. First bottle I've had of this vintage so I can't say how it's aging but it didn't quite live up to the 2004 we opened a couple months earlier. Last glass was very tart due to some light sediment and/or tartrate crystals, so recommend a short decant or use of a filtered pour spout. Overall a nice wine but somewhat unremarkable. (2563 views)
Tasted by HWgeek on 2/18/2017 & rated 89 points: Feels like it is thinned out, some nose left but not much, palate is okay, with a light finish. Nothing to get excited about anymore. Definitely drink now if you got any left! (2824 views)
Tasted by Jmartt on 4/17/2016: Decent, but the fruit's kinda rounded off. I'd drink it now if ya got it. (3143 views)
Tasted by Ewhite30 on 12/11/2015: Bummer about this one, our last bottle. The prior few had been great, even up to a few months back, but unfortunately this one was off. The nose was mostly there - blue and black fruits with notes of sweet cocoa - but after a short time in the decanter it changed to a fairly unpleasant stewed smell. Flavors across the palate matched that too. I'm not totally sure if it was an off bottle or if it's really slid downhill quickly.... if you have a few you might want to check in. (2432 views)
Tasted by Bonsingers on 11/29/2015 & rated 89 points: Still good, but not as great as other years. Or perhaps it just has a more European restraint and less of the rich Napa boldness we've come to expect from the Elu. Agree with other comments that there might not be much benefit to further aging (though the 2003 still shines and probably will for several more years). (2436 views)
Tasted by SweetJoeyZ on 10/3/2015 flawed bottle: Waited too long may be issues with how I stores it (2366 views)
Tasted by Ewhite30 on 4/5/2015: Still drinking well but the fruit is starting to fade so I don't think there's much benefit in holding off longer. Cab takes the forefront with notes of vanilla, tobacco, green pepper and black pepper. Blue and blackberries at the finish. Round mouthfeel, lingers nicely. (2463 views)
Tasted by redbrix on 1/31/2014 & rated 91 points: Keeps getting better with age. Still has good structure and can sit for a few more years. (3816 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 12/7/2013 & rated 90 points: loamy earth, currant and smokey wood. Very restrained, but enjoyable. (3549 views)
Tasted by East of Napa on 7/14/2013 & rated 89 points: Not bad (4225 views)
Tasted by travelme on 12/31/2012 & rated 88 points: Deep purple in color (almost a light black). You can taste black cherries, vanilla, cola, tobacco, and cedar. A bit thin but nice Rutherford tannin structure. A little hint of heat but like another taster noted seemed a little muted and closed. A little plain for a $55-60 wine. (4882 views)
Tasted by Winecat on 11/10/2012 & rated 86 points: Full body cherry and leather. Needed to open to get full flavor (4894 views)
Tasted by DNeamand on 7/11/2012 & rated 89 points: Definitely required some stand time but quite well balanced medium to long finish (3416 views)
Tasted by East of Napa on 5/31/2012 & rated 89 points: Tasted better day two. .nice wine (3345 views)
Tasted by Petiger on 3/18/2012 & rated 91 points: Smoother than the last 2 bottles. Very nice finish and nice nose of black cherry and tobacco. (3192 views)
Tasted by KVM on 8/25/2011 & rated 88 points: Snazzy label. Drank at lunch with a customer, so only paid passing attention (to the wine, that is!). A little bit VA, solid red fruit, plums, oak. Silky texture. (3204 views)
Tasted by Vinocrew on 7/12/2011 & rated 90 points: Enjoyed with some of our Vinocrew buds. Did not decant, if we would have the wine may have scored a couple of points higher. Full body, purple color, great legs. It had a smokey dark cherry noise. (3525 views)
Tasted by Grape_ape on 6/2/2011: very solid albeit young. this drinks well above what the prior notes would indicate, especially at the blowout $28 price... (3660 views)
Tasted by Varus on 4/25/2011 & rated 86 points: I'm not convinced this wine is ready to drink. The wine refused to open up throughout the night - the fruit hidden behind rather prevalent tannin. Not as full bodied as I had imagined it would be. I will drink the rest on day 2 and reevaluate. However, wines at this price-point should not have to explain themselves. Luckily I got this at a rather steep discount. (4052 views)
Tasted by Ewhite30 on 4/17/2011 & rated 90 points: Full, rich, nicely developed and likely to improve with some more time in the bottle. (3237 views)
Tasted by Vetterbrian84 on 3/24/2011 & rated 86 points: Perfectly good wine, but not what one would hope given the price. Very fruit forward and easy to drink. A fair amount of oak. (4414 views)
Tasted by cartime on 11/20/2010 & rated 87 points: Raspberry, black cherry, vanilla, cedar. A bit thin on the mid palate. Dusty tannins. A bit of heat and not much else on the finish. (5040 views)

2005 St. Supéry Élu Meritage

Appellation: Napa Valley
Blend: 75% Cabernet Sauvignon 19% Merlot 3% Petit Verdot 3% Cabernet Franc
pH: 3.70
Total Acidity: 5.9 g/L
Residual Sugar: <0.02%
Wine Alcohol: 14.4%
This wine was aged in 78% French oak and 22% American oak barrels (38% New oak).

Aromas of plum and black cherry permeate this inky, garnet hued Bordeaux blend. Flavors of smooth vanilla and hints of tobacco are present on the long, full finish. This wine is seamless from the beginning to the last sip; it will age beautifully and develop its flavors in the bottle.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
