Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 3/14/2015 & rated 89 points: A bunch of wines with Friends at NVW&C (Napa Valley Wine & Cigar): My first time trying this wine or even hearing about it. I have had very few Albarino's from CA (Abrente and Bonny Doon come to mind) and this is about as good as any I have had from CA or Spain for that matter. I never find it amazing, but it cab be a quite refreshing and enjoyable wine. This certainly hits those notes. The nose is very clean with a mineral streak. On the palate, it has a nice salinity with a mineral streak. Also just a bit of faint pears. Clean finish. Very nice. (3317 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 11/27/2014 & rated 88 points: For those of you who give sub-85 scores and don't explain why -- SHAME ON YOU. Score of 72 indicates the bottle was either flawed, or it knocked you out when trying to remove the pressboard cork and you have a personal vendetta. Either way, "NR" or "flawed" should be your rating.

I DIGRESS --- pressboard cork popped. Rather tight in the bottle. The wine smelled of kiwi and lemon but the nose was quite faint. Was beginning to think the 72 rating was actually correct (just kidding...I know better). The wine poured a light straw color into the glass. On the nose in the glass, the notes were much more vibrant. Lots of kiwi, a minerality, and a little sting in the nostrils. On the palate is a medium (-) bodied wine with sharp acidity, a hint of effervescence. Watermelon, kiwi, pineapple. Not very strong, but there. Finishes with good substance, no tannin, good weight. A correct albarino wine from Cali. Continued acidity. Nice wine. Not the best and definitely not a 90 (but better than 72), but again this one will make a very good appetizer wine for $20/bottle.  Tasted by Weston3220 on 11/16/2014: med+ body, great balance and freshness, tasty (3084 views)
Tasted by River Rat on 10/12/2014: Nose of lemon, honey, nectarine and white flowers. No nonsense creamy texture comes off slightly flabby but the acid turns on late creating a crisp enjoyable finish. Lean 12.5 abv, fun and refreshing wine. (3424 views)
Tasted by Weston3220 on 10/4/2014: nice albarino style, with a medium body, med+ acidity, good structure and fruit, very enjoyable for a warm summer day

conc: Solid, would buy again (1315 views)

Albariño

Varietal character (Appellation America)

Albariño (Galician pronunciation: [albaˈɾiːɲo]) or Alvarinho (Portuguese: [alvaˈɾiːɲo]) is a variety of white wine grape grown in Galicia (northwest Spain) and Monção (northwest Portugal), where it is used to make varietal white wines.

Albariño is actually the Galician name for the grape, with Albarín Blanco an occasional synonym. In Portugal it is known as Alvarinho, and sometimes as Cainho Branco. [1]

It was presumably brought to Iberia by Cluny monks in the twelfth century. Its name "Alba-Riño" means "the white from Rhine" and it has locally been thought to be a Riesling clone originating from the Alsace region of France, although earliest known records of Riesling as a grape variety date from the 15th, rather than the 12th, century. It is also theorized that the grape is a close relative of the French grape Petit Manseng. [2]

It should not be confused with the Alvarinho Liláz grape of Madeira.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
