Community Tasting Notes (average 92 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 93 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Csow on 4/4/2024 & rated 96 points: Tasted at Convivial. Opening aromatics of leather, pepper, dark sweet berries with seductive undercurrents of ‘green’ that haunts at the periphery.
Palette, is med-heavy. Soft supple tannins, that engage the front and mid tongue. Sinking luxuriously into the middle tongue and front upper gum region. Acid is firm and gentle. Unravels into a sweet guava finish.

An hour on: acidity and body have integrated. Body feels medium. Acidity is bright. Vegetal and floral aromatics come to the fore. Jambi flavours still persist but structure is tighter and lighter (501 views)
Tasted by LB88 on 2/1/2024 & rated 91 points: Still quite primary and lacks the depth and concentration to truly be scored higher (779 views)
Tasted by salil on 12/16/2023 & rated 94 points: Oh hell yeah. This is outstanding and an even better showing than a bottle I opened back in Feb with Zach and Nick (see zachb's note). Showing some leathery and other savoury development around the bright, high toned red and dark fruited flavours, with that Cabernet Franc greenness very much there in spades and adding a lovely sense of freshness.  Tasted by Raage on 3/16/2023 & rated 92 points: (CDV)

Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/14/2023: Wine Workshop: Focus on Clos Rougeard (Cafe Evergreen): Similar write-up to the one I had on the 2010. Interesting because while not the single vineyards this flight with these wines with just a bit of age was really something. Delicious. This had it’s own style of beauty. Darker fruits. Again that herbal and interesting. Really enjoyable. (1660 views)
Tasted by vintage_whine on 3/2/2023: Red and orange with pronounced brett. It’s a more powerful expression of this wine, pyrazines are powerful but there a bit of a hollow middle to this that seems momentarily watery. (1467 views)
Tasted by zachb1125 on 2/9/2023 & rated 92 points: Dinner with Salil and Nick - 1/2

Funkiest of funky noses, so so good. Classic northern Rhone. Very forresty, meaty, bloody almost. Black pepper, white pepper, and a little blueberry. High acidity, high tannins, killer wine. (1507 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 10/21/2022: Notes similar to my previous bottle, and on that note PCLIN’s note from 5/15/22 is also spot on. A fantastic wine from a truly great producer. Drinking well now, but no rush for a well-stored bottle. (1468 views)
Tasted by pclin on 5/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Everything is great about this wine except price. This bottle smelled like a Chambolle Musigny and tasted like a Grand Cru Burgundy while it normally smelled like a Cheval Blanc and tasted like a Grand Cru Burgundy. My assessment of this wine was so wrong in ‘15, shame on me. (1619 views)
(1681 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 4/25/2022: Noble Rot (1634 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 4/17/2022 & rated 93 points: À New York, La Barra au Mercado Little Spain (cork fee 35$).

93-94 pts (1880 views)
Tasted by jhbehrens on 1/19/2022 & rated 91 points: Quite tertiary aromas just after opening the bottle with bracing acidity and fruity palate but after 45 minutes in the decanter the wine became more voluptuous. Green pepper, leather, sour cherry. Very good and still some time left in it (1761 views)
Tasted by B Paul on 1/15/2021: Expressive and open from the start. A bit of green bell pepper is there, but otherwise it’s all red fruit and spice. Silky. Like a mix between Right Bank Bordeaux and Burgundy. Really fantastic, and at beginning of drinking window (which will be long). (2462 views)
Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 12/18/2020 & rated 93 points: [Blind] Green bell pepper right up front immediately gets you thinking Cabernet Franc. This is young, concentrated, and super punchy. Some expressive high notes but overall young and still has a lot of vanilla oak on there. Intensely herbaceous and green. The group concluded immediately that this was a young Cheval Blanc, only a matter of what vintage. Very interesting wine, have only ever tasted a couple of these and this was probably the youngest. 93 now but 95 potential. (2441 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 9/20/2020: Opened 3 hours earlier. Light ruby. Classic green olive and herb nose. Light to medium weight. Gritty, alkaline, and stony to start, this fleshed out, gained texture, and noticeably sweetened with more air, which is NOT to say that it became overtly ripe or that the limestone core went away. A marvelous terroir wine that was energized by accompanying food (lamb in this case). (2708 views)
Tasted by pclin on 4/5/2020 & rated 93 points: Extensive Social Distancing Drink #8. Floral notes so unique to Cabernet Franc soaring from glass, very clean too. Fine tannins, vibrant acidity, and silky on the palate. Wow, excellent showing today, best bottle from the 6x so far. Good length and complexity for an “entry” wine. Slight warmth at finish reflecting the hot vintage. Very very nice, as they said, there are two suns in Loire and one of them rotate around Rougeard. Reference producer in Loire and 2nd to none. Only if they are not so hard to find and not so expensive, I would drink this regularly. (2653 views)
Tasted by s******n on 3/21/2020 & rated 92 points: 3 Stunden vor dem Probieren geöffnet.
- Farbe: Hohe Farbintensität. Schwarzrot.
- Geruch und Geschmack: Etwas Besonderes. Ganz eigene Frucht. Milde Taninne. Schön integrierte Säure. Langer Nachhall.
- Wow. Etwas Besonderes. Toller Wein. (2270 views)

Barnyard on the nose, lovely smooth palate (1844 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 6/30/2019: Served blind alongside the '09 Poyeaux. I expected it to not be a fair comparison, and to show relatively poorly. Surprisingly, this was not the case at all, with the Clos showing more general depth and complexity. May be a result of currently being more open, but a great result, and pleasant surprise nonetheless. (2673 views)
Grand vin. (2826 views)
Tasted by NickBurwood on 3/10/2019 & rated 92 points: Aerated and decanted for 3 hours.
Ripe concentrated dark berries with a savoury core. Grainy tannins, charred oak nuances and earthy. Nonetheless more than drinkable now although would probably benefit further from another year or two in bottle. Great CF.
Should be good for up to 20 years from vintage. 92+ (2342 views)
Tasted by walkerjfw on 2/19/2019: 4th Annual PNV Kick-off Lunch, great group of friends and vintners (Juan/Jamie/Tor/Bart)... (Farmstead, St. Helena, CA): One of my contributions. Fun to drink this with a well-educated wine crowd, a number in our group were not familiar with the wine...PnP, drank over an hour.

Dark ruby color, mildly cloudy, full to the rim. Nose showing plums, floral notes, olives(?), Palate showing sour cherry, raspberry, spices, mild anise, sous bois. Texture is creamy smooth and -as advertised - notes of the bell pepper notes that can haunt Cab Franc (even from the Loire...). Medium body and finish...

This is an elegant and "interesting" wine (both in taste and intellectually...) At least in the US, red wines from the Loire are not well known and at the high - end rare and expensive. Only knock on this is how expensive it has become. This may be at the beginning of its drinking window, beautiful wine... (2414 views)
Tasted by psmith on 2/3/2019 & rated 92 points: This has a really pretty, classic flavor profile. All dark berry fruits and forward herbal notes. It might be young, but there's no harm at all in drinking this now. Medium-bodied, and ripe as far as Rougeard goes. Nice wine in a good place. (2724 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 2/3/2019 & rated 93 points: Nose: The nose is fragrant and herbal with red cherries, raspberries, dark chocolate, violets, roses, herbs, and dark red berries. There is excellent depth and class here with great balance between the herbal parts of the grape and red fruits.

Taste: Medium bodied with medium+ acidity and medium+ tannins. The structure is well integrated, though the tannins have a sneakiness to them. The feel is refined and deep with red cherries, herbs, raspberries, roses, and some dark chocolate.

Overall: This is a gorgeous Clos Rougeard that is drinking beautifully right now. This is a dignified and poised Saumur that has excellent depth. While this can certainly age a good while, it’s just wonderful right now. (2630 views)
