Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.6 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 67 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by ppmm on 4/18/2024: Pulled this for leftover pizza. (I know: who has leftover pizza? Never mind.) Perfectly adequate, but flat, showing only the occasional burst of fresh fruit; otherwise, it’s pleasantly but undistinguishedly Ridgey, if you know what I mean. (81 views)
Tasted by klezman on 11/21/2023: This bottle was just medium. Nice juicy fruit - almost candied. Not a whole lot else going on in this bottle, though. (360 views)
Tasted by klezman on 12/8/2022: While the first bottle of this set was somewhat mediocre, this one was firing on all cylinders. Brawny strawberry and earth aromas, nice balance, a hint of oxidation that provided complexity, and this was lovely to drink. Looks like bottle variation will be expected for my remaining 4 bottles of this. (1094 views)
Tasted by klezman on 9/18/2022: This was tasty. Sometimes open and sometimes more closed down, but the occasional aromas of wild strawberries certainly hit home. (1252 views)
Tasted by Mortgage92 on 2/9/2021 & rated 90 points: this garnet colored wine has medium body and medium finish. Aromas of oak and wet wool are noticeable. Flavors of red currant and flint produce a mild drinking wine. (1326 views)
Tasted by chandlerc@gmail.com on 12/30/2020 & rated 88 points: Opaque dark raspberry color; blackberry cobbled on the nose; medium bodied and minimally tannic; continuing black fruit and seeds; dark and lingering finish of wood, anise, and slight astringency (1244 views)
Tasted by snsharma on 10/31/2020 & rated 91 points: Well integrated. Drinking in its prime right now. (1214 views)
Tasted by MRichman on 10/21/2020: Very good. Dark fruit, tar, smoke, muddy earth. This has softened considerably and lost a lot of its acidic bite. The carignane may be a more short lived bottling, but even 7 years on this is quite good. Probably better off drinking earlier, but this is in no way over the hill. (1101 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 9/12/2020 & rated 90 points: Deep center, red rim with a little sign of age.
Creamy, freshly squeezed blackberries, very slight VA, chocolate.
Smooth, brambly pipe tobacco, good acidity and some tannin still, creme de mure, smokey, alcohol is present, some vinous greenness, good length, great fruit and sap finish.
Drinking very well now, but has enough backbone to go for another 2-4 years. (1043 views)
Tasted by gudetama on 5/21/2020 & rated 81 points: Thin. Tannins are fading. Drink as soon as you can if you have extra bottles. Ridge definitely means it when they say 3 to 5 years. I, unfortunately, have two more bottles. (926 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 4/8/2020 & rated 91 points: Have not been a fan of the carignane grape but this was pretty good. Maybe I'm getting old. Not supposed to age that well but has some layered purple and blue fruit, moderately complex, and a pleasant finish. (912 views)
Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 12/11/2019 & rated 91 points: Deep ruby, brown tinge, barely translucent, legs, 14.5% abv. Aromas of black fruit, parchment, earth, dried leaves. Dry, medium-medium(+) acidity, medium(-) tannin, medium-medium(+) alcohol (with no heat!), medium(+) body. Palate of black fruit, baked black prune, leather, cocoa pepper/spice. Elegant, balanced, complex and beautiful crunchy pleasant mouthfeel in lasting slightly sweet finish. (1075 views)
Tasted by Alro on 11/29/2019 & rated 90 points: this one gets smoother with proper cellaring and age....enjoy now through 2022 (967 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 9/16/2019 & rated 89 points: Don't have fond memories of carignane, but this was surprisingly pleasant. Decent red and purple fruit, some back of the tongue acidity, and an OK finish. (1053 views)
Tasted by Birorganic on 2/6/2019 & rated 91 points: Really nice. Easy drinker. Ready now. (1342 views)
Tasted by casjf on 11/29/2018 & rated 89 points: Blackberry flavors predominate. Rich and drinking well now. (1327 views)
Tasted by casjf on 11/12/2018 & rated 90 points: Blackberry & violet flavors. Went well w claypot chicken. (1294 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 8/25/2018 & rated 87 points: Drink cold! (1516 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 8/23/2018: Rich and fruity. Nicely balanced. Drinking well. (1368 views)
Tasted by Ecb1456 on 6/20/2018 & rated 90 points: Soft and supple. Under the radar varietal that is a personal favorite of mine. And Ridge does it so well. (1355 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 4/14/2018 & rated 89 points: Just like previous bottle (and previous tasting note). (1355 views)
Tasted by WineAttic on 12/19/2017 & rated 87 points: This one disappointed me. It was ok but certainly not great. I picked up my wife's Pinot Noir by accident and she immediately corrected me and that bottle was half the price of this one. I'm torn, it's like a mad teenager in that strange place where it's past being new and fruit forward but too young to concentrate the flavors or have a sophisticated finish. I'm putting Argon on the other half of the bottle and approaching again in a couple or three days. I'm letting the other bottle sit for five more years to see what happens. (1685 views)
Tasted by pkpjoe on 8/21/2017 & rated 88 points: Agreed with the other tasting notes. Good but not great. (1771 views)
Tasted by bravo.solares on 8/15/2017 & rated 89 points: Raspberries and cranberries, on both nose and palate. Juicy. Dry and refreshing at once. Good acidity. Would pair well with food (especially Italian, I think). Simple and straightforward. (1687 views)
Tasted by SMHalps on 7/17/2017 & rated 89 points: Part of a Carignane tasting that I had with my wine group. This was the only wine that I supplied, and it was one of 7 wines we had. Much less rustic than the Languedoc versions. Less acidic than the Italian and Spanish (which was 50% Garnacha) we had. Really the most polished of the group. Big nose, notes of Cherries, Blackberries and some tar. Very dark color. Enjoyed it with a Flatiron steak. (1848 views)

Varietal character (Appellation America)---- Also: International and historical summary of Carignane

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
