| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 7 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by North Willis on 4/11/2024 & rated 93 points: PnP. This has gained in complexity since bottle consumed in December 2022. Color has deepened to a medium gold, and acidity has firmed up. Medium plus finish with mineral notes. Great texture and mouthfeel. This will continue to improve in bottle. (66 views) | | Tasted by Diane (LI) on 10/8/2023: Interesting, enjoyable, hard to describe. Well integrated with just the merest hint of sweetness. Was a good accompaniment to a charcuterie platter. (394 views) | | Tasted by North Willis on 12/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Opened up quite nicely after coming up directly from a cold cellar. Beautiful aromatics that kept getting better and better as the wine opened up. Showing ripe pear, lemon, and beachball notes. Full bodied mouthfeel, with good acidity. Unclear whether this will improve with further bottle age. Will try another in 6 months or so. (448 views) | | Tasted by M.Batard on 9/24/2020 & rated 91 points: Straw yellow color. Golden delicious apples along with skin of a ripe pear, over stony backdrop. Very good acidity, although all of the flavor and sensation are front of palate, leaving the persistent finish a bit odd. Not terribly sweet (but I wasn't sure what to expect): maybe between a GG and a Kabinett, German style-wise. Paired very well with Pad Kee Mao from Thai Kitchen, but would have wanted sweeter if I'd had something with more heat. (969 views) | | Tasted by S-F on 7/15/2020 & rated 90 points: Deeper yellow on the color. Floral notes, almost like a young Viognier or Chard in that regard. Apple, of course. There was a hint of tannins as well, which feels unusual. Softer finish. Not lacking in acid, but not as racy as many other Rieslings. For me, again, way too sweet. This is even sweeter than the Boxler Sommerberg I had a few nights ago. Closer inspection on bottle reveals no classification, maybe because it's from Alsace. But I did have it with a curry, so the sweetness kinda worked with that. (1137 views) | | Tasted by rlove on 10/25/2019 & rated 91 points: Sharp florals and slate on the nose. Great acidity and structure. Starts and finishes strong but a tad thin in the midpalate. (933 views) | | Tasted by rlove on 3/23/2019 & rated 90 points: Rich, floral nose screams peach and lime blossom. Energetic, aided by a slight hit of CO2 and a killer streak of acid. That energy is welcome because there's a bit of weight and richness here that hopefully will shed with time. A very good Alsatian Riesling. (856 views) |
| Albert Boxler Producer website
Description No domaine in Alsace makes better Rieslings than Albert Boxler. Maybe as good, but not better. Boxler has its’ vineyards around the charming hamlet of Niedermorschwihr, as well as in neighboring Turckheim. The production is ecological since many years. Jean Boxler is many generation removed from his ancestor of the same name that moved here from Switzerland in 1673. Currently rules the roost at this humble yet incredibly exciting domaine. Intense and serious about his land. Hi Craft. and Hi wine. Jean is the genius behind what are certainly some of the finest white wine in Alsace (and the world). All wines carry a code, which is:
10’s is Sylvaner 20’s is Pinot Blanc 30’s is Riesling 40’s is Muscat 50’s is Pinot Gris 60’s is Gewurztraminer In addition, the various vineyards have their designation:
1 is Grand Cru Sommerberg B and 2 are Grand Cru Brand D is Duttenstein, a part of Grand Cru Sommerberg E is Eckberg, a part of Grand Cru Sommerberg JV betyder Jeunes vignes, young vines K is Kirchberg, a part of Grand Cru Brand Hence, a wine labelled L31D is a Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg from the section Duttenstein.
The wines from Boxler shine due to their finesse, purity, complexity and … all the other things that characterize great wines. Even better, since Jean Boxler manages to obtain mature fruit in the cooler years as well as to maintain firm acidity the warmer vintages, a Boxler wine will never ever let you down.Riesling Varietal character (Appellation America) | A short history of Riesling (Uncork) | Riesling (wikipedia)BrandAlsace Grand Cru Brand exact outline on weinlagen.infoFrance Vins de France (Office National Interprofessionnel des Vins ) | Pages Vins, Directory of French Winegrowers | French Wine (Wikipedia)
