Community Tasting Notes (average 92.5 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 33 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by onboisduvin on 1/14/2024 & rated 91 points: A bit masked by Bizot and Naudin's echezeaux during the meal. I guess I could not make a correct judgement under such circumstances. (356 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 2/3/2023 & rated 93 points: A really elegant and lovely display of dark fruit, rhubarb, spice and floral notes. A bit restrained but very nice. (922 views)
Tasted by ilee on 1/12/2023 & rated 97 points: Dinner with RC & friends at China Tang (China Tang, Hong Kong): Deep and vibrant ruby color. On the nose, beautiful delicate notes of blackberry and dark plum, with hints of fresh cut hay and maybe even a little tar. Darker in character than the Chambolle opened side by side. But oh so fine in every way -- fruit is intense and focused, yet dances lightly on the palate; tannins have a youthful structure, but are fine as silk. A pleasure to drink. (851 views)
Tasted by Hmmgodstil on 11/6/2022 & rated 96 points: A bit shy in the start but after 3 hours decanting the wine was singing. The intensity of Emmanuel Rouget wines and the more green herbaceous style of the vintage 2006 really come together in this bottle. (800 views)
Tasted by gsquireh on 9/13/2021 & rated 96 points: Showing beautfully, a burst of cinnamon spice and lucsious red plum and raspberry fruit, has you at first sniff and swirl. Rich and rounded the fruit aromas frame ginger and cocoa, depth. Savor this sweet and delicious beauty with scents of the finest and most tender roast meat at the heart of the enchanting and enveloping garden floral bouquet. (1545 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 5/21/2020 & rated 98 points: Medium dark red; somewhat neutral nose with sweet undertones and light expression; light attack, refined, followed with nice long sweetness which goes on; really inviting; excellent (2037 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 3/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Delicious tonight (2061 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 9/29/2017: Served blind, I thought this was an '09 when it came across as fruity, or '03 when it came across as somewhat candied. It was hard to decipher the appelation as well, got very little suggesting Vosne-Romanee.

In the final analysis, the oak is overwhelming the wine at this stage. Give it time to integrate, and someday we may have something here that resembles an Echezeaux. (3818 views)
Tasted by Bourgognefreak on 7/5/2017 & rated 94 points: The 2006 vintages has clearly not been ready for drinking until now and it was with a certain reservation we drank this classy wine from Rouget.
It did deliver! - smooth and rather elegant with a bit edge which did not disturb but on the contrary made the wine more complex.
It can easily cellar many years more but it did not feel wrong to open it now.
The tasting note was dominated by dark fruit and a bit of earthiness which will develop more in the coming years. (4006 views)
Tasted by UTPK on 6/30/2017: Brooding, deep and rustic nose, but combining this with great finesse and transparency. Notes of forest floor, dark berries, some violets. On the palate it has a sweet and lucsious attack, concentrated full-bodied mid palate and a refreshing, acidity driven finish with distinct, but fully mature tannins. Great wine to drink now, preferably with food as it can withstand a lot. Kept fine for two days, so many years left due to high tannic contant (typical 2006 for me). Absolutely the best 2006 I've had so far. (3735 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 4/9/2017 & rated 91 points: Nicely complex notes, especially on the nose with boysenberry, spice and some minerals, but what's holding it back are angular tannins that interfere with the finish. Got a little better, but not much over 2-3 hours. I could still appreciate the quality of fruit, it just needs to resolve this...and judging by others reviews it might not be widespread (3429 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 8/29/2016 & rated 94 points: Another superb showing. (4313 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 7/7/2016 & rated 94 points: Casual Burg Dinner with Friends (The Bristol - Chicago IL): Six months ago this was jammy and uninteresting. Tonight it was balanced, sophisticated and incredibly nuanced. Obviously a much better bottle, much more consistent with what i expect from Rouget. My WOTN, most others agreed. (3147 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 3/26/2016 & rated 94 points: Another great bottle. (2484 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/27/2015: Friday after Thanksgiving (FAT) - Part 1 - Burgundy 2006 (Palm Beach Gardens FL): Open 2 hours when first tasted. Lush and fat red fruit that is still so primary and comes across as jammy. Moderate spice at best. Elegant tannins, but clearly front-and-center. New oak still protrudes a bit. This needs lots of time and was frankly not even close to the quality of the Cros Parantoux. Tasted again near the end of the evening with similar results. (3700 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 9/7/2014 & rated 93 points: Ceres Table (Chicago): I enjoyed this much more than the last bottle. This seemed more excited and vibrant tonight but the rhubarb, red fruit, roses, spice and mushrooms were all still at play. (3803 views)
Tasted by Greg Munyard on 5/22/2014 & rated 88 points: Nose: rich, red and sumptuous. Quite overt and powerful.
Palate: Quite rich and concentrated but not particularly refined. Initially a bit grippy on opening, it subdued after a while in the carafe. Nevertheless, this bottle lacked a little finesse and the red fruits dominant (raspberry especially) palate did not linger for long. We both much preferred a 2008 Arnoux-Lachaux Echezaux that we had a few nights earlier (which had darker and more complex fruits, and was much more refined). (3512 views)
Tasted by johnh1001 on 5/20/2014 & rated 91 points: Interesting nose of red flowers, rhubarb, spice and earth. Nicely textured on the palate. Elegant with great detail. A bit tight but very pretty. Did not have the 'wow' factor of the 09. (3083 views)
Tasted by Lord Rayas on 5/26/2013 & rated 90 points: 龍哥 dinner (潮庭): still a baby with only primary flavours. hard to tell, but I wouldn't touch it for at least 3-4 years. (4431 views)
Tasted by dutchwinelover on 12/28/2011 & rated 75 points: i looked forward to popp an emanuel rouget echezeaux but it came with a dissapointment.
poured in the glass and took a zip;it diddn't taste very well, it was ok but not great and there was little fruit and no after taste so i think it was closed or maybe a bad bottle of echezeaux!''

so for now 75 points and ill wait to see your comments on this one! (4936 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 8/17/2011: Popped and poured. Dark red/black fruit, cranberry and blackberry. Blue fruit and earth too. Wood spice and stemmy notes. Firm fruit on the palate, great deal of minerality. Medium body. Finish seemed a bit short. Definitely needs time to come around. (3897 views)
Tasted by danielk168 on 7/16/2011 & rated 90 points: Still very young, good aromtaics but not plesant to drink yet. But birthday boy wants to open, so.......... (3650 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 11/9/2010: The first sniff conjures up images of plush, purple velvet. This is a delicious sweet and lush wine that’s laden with enticing floral notes. It is creamy with good volume and outstanding length. (3470 views)
Tasted by Alex G. on 4/10/2010: There was a case of this present at the dinner it was served, and thank goodness for that: there were THREE corked bottles in a row. I certainly hope this was a fluke, but wow was that frustrating. Anyway, the fourth bottle was quite pleasant. There's good fruit here, but I felt the wine was somewhat muted in its youthful state, and even after hours in the glass it hadn't budged much. That said, the minerality, fruit, and overall balance were noteworthy. I'd be curious to revisit this in 10 years. (3658 views)
Tasted by MatthewF on 9/9/2009: Some Musignys with Friends (Chicago IL): Deep maroon color. More opulent aromatics than the Georges Jayer Echezeaux served alongside. Ripe dark berry and a bit of underbrush all framed by rich wood spice. Great mouthfeel; ripe fruit, mineral core, great acidity; an all around fantastic showing with a lengthy finish. (4163 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
