Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Night Train on 3/31/2024 & rated 93 points: Had this alongside a 2014 Cayuse, with an Easter leg of lamb (perfect match, by the way). I expected this to be overshadowed by the Cayuse, but it really wasn't. In fact, the two were strikingly similar. The nose and taste of both wines practically screamed SYRAH. Neither wine was nearly as funky as I might have expected. The Cayuse was slightly bigger and slightly richer, but this was no slouch in either department. Has years to go. (351 views)
Tasted by Cake & Fine Wine on 5/12/2023 & rated 89 points: Round 2 - not quite as charming. Quite nice, soft, elegant but maybe a little weak. There’s also a slight bitter savouriness on the back end. I decanted this one for longer than the last (about 3 hrs), maybe it’s better off a shorter decant. Although there may’ve been a bit of bottle fault, this was part of a batch which wasn’t stored brilliantly. (866 views)
Tasted by thesternowl on 2/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Saint Cosme is famous for its estate vineyards in Gigondas but they are also a highly regarded negociant with long standing relationships throughout the Rhone, giving them access to fruit from some highly regarded lieu-dits. Their Cote Rotie is no exception and this was a killer expression of 2014, if you’re into that sort of thing like I am. This bottle was provided from my cellar and was purchased upon release. Opened and splash decanted just before service. No formal notes and holy whole cluster Batman! This was straight up bussin, with rotundone for dayz! A black pepper and olive bomb with all of the garrigue and purple flowers your heart could ask for and some blood and bacon for good measure. The tannins are well integrated and the fruit is just really well balanced with the structure at this point. The finish was long with a dance of fruit and earth on the palate that was hugely satisfying. Some might be turned off by the sanguine, feral funkiness this wine possesses but for me, it’s hugely charming. Drink now or over the next 5-10 years with ease. Would be great with a meal or on its own (as it was tonight). (1037 views)
Tasted by Cake & Fine Wine on 12/25/2022 & rated 92 points: Maybe I just love Cote Rotie but I liked this a lot. Smokey blackcurrent and all the meatiness. Medium bodied, decent length. Secondary developments. We had this against a 2019 Cote Rotie (better vintage) but I preferred this. (956 views)
Tasted by platpeeps on 11/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Liquorice & blackberry seasoned with spice and black pepper. Vanilla, toast and menthol notes creep in too, It’s both fresh and savoury with a silky texture and soft tannins. The finish was long and the various constituents fully integrated. For a supposedly difficult vintage this was effortless and impressive. 91 pts (1011 views)
Tasted by DFBW on 4/22/2020 & rated 88 points: Quite spicy and almost too harsh and acidic on the palate after a three hour decant. Probably too young to drink but I'm no expert on Cote Rotie. Have one left so will park that for a few years and check back. Not to my taste at this stage. (2248 views)
Tasted by gregbohn on 12/30/2019 & rated 92 points: Of course this needs more cellar time to peak, but was very good now with a couple hour decant. Will probably buy another bottle or two to hold. (1818 views)
90-91 (3025 views)

(2841 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 6/1/2017 & rated 90 points: Opened way too young, so a bit hard to rate. Dense and monolithic. Blue fruit and pepper, with notable minerality, almost saline. Wait 3+ years. (2831 views)
Tasted by bajayngo on 4/18/2017: Quick note from the SoH party - Young and tastey, a good dose of burnt tire that means to me it needs time in the bottle but plenty of meat, animal fur, smoke, dark berries. A muscular wine at this stage which will only get better. (1988 views)
Tasted by Motz on 4/11/2017 & rated 93 points: Bloody, meaty, peppery, iodine, and mineral ore driven bouquet. Focused purple fruits, lavender, kelp, and umami, with graphite, coal, and charred earth accents. Thought provoking! Very young and likely to improve. Recommend holding for five to seven years. 93-94. (2216 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Côte-Rôtie

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
