Tasted by cacastine on 12/24/2023 & rated 94 points: Excellent and drinking just right as a younger bottle. Balanced, silky, strong fruit and some vegetal tones, does not come across hot at all. (622 views)
Tasted by rwerner on 11/11/2023 & rated 93 points: This and chewy syrah with dark delicious fruit and a long finish. 15.7% alcohol but didn't taste hot. (630 views)
Tasted by mpricher on 4/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Herman Story is FUN! Have only had three bottlings and they’ve all been memorable. This one is dark, but medium bodied. Broadband luscious black and blue berry fruit, with a strong finishing. Paired expertly with Smoked Easter Ham and fixins! Big recommended star on this Syrah. Power and finesse. (1108 views)
Tasted by talid on 3/3/2023 flawed bottle: Corked! (But good enough to still drink!) (1034 views)
Tasted by yasha on 2/5/2023 & rated 94 points: Great syrah, (1157 views)
 Tasted by tamfrezo on 1/31/2023 & rated 92 points: A favorite....Excellent (1016 views)
Tasted by EvanJB on 12/28/2022: Very nice place right now (961 views)
Tasted by tamfrezo on 7/3/2022 & rated 90 points: as always excellent winery and wine (1157 views)
Tasted by OldHick95 on 7/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Old leather and seared meat aromas. Blackberry, pepper, bacon fat. The savory quality dissolves into a nicely acidic dark berry note. Day 2: The savory and berry flavors are now knitted together into an easy complexity. Should have decanted last night. Raising the score accordingly. (1004 views)
Tasted by tamfrezo on 6/24/2022 & rated 90 points: Excellent (1023 views)
Tasted by tamfrezo on 5/29/2022 & rated 91 points: Superb Syrah so full of flavor. The best reds come from Paso Robles (1039 views)
Tasted by Chied on 2/20/2022 & rated 94 points: This wine has continued to mature into a stellar Syrah! Loved it with NY Strip Steak and port infused rice! Cheers! (1208 views)
Tasted by lundmc on 1/15/2022 & rated 94 points: Another knockout vintage, and to my recollection strikingly different than 2017. This is layered and intense, dark fruits galore, graham cracker, some meat (not the smack-you-in-the-face bacon like ‘17), cola again, and still some zing of acidity to balance it out. Alone or with food this is so satisfying. And at this price point too. And how does it carry 15.7% ABV without a trace of heat? Wow. (911 views)
Tasted by tamfrezo on 12/25/2021 & rated 92 points: Wonderful Syrah deep perfect taste. This is a great Paso winery for all blends (876 views)
Tasted by HU on 10/29/2021 & rated 94 points: Loved this wine! Dense, bold, intense, black fruit, dark chocolate, spice. (1312 views)
Tasted by tamfrezo on 10/10/2021 & rated 92 points: Excellent Syrah, I haven't tasted a better one. This winery is superb (1176 views)
Tasted by tamfrezo on 9/5/2021 & rated 90 points: Just one word "Excellent" (1119 views)
Tasted by Les Raisins Du Aron on 8/1/2021 & rated 92 points: Delicious dark blueberry, spice, which lingers to a nice finish. (1270 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 6/24/2021 & rated 94 points: Splash double decant. Opaque eggplant color. Marshmallow, black walnut, roast beef, and black cherry on the rich nose. Very smooth, dry, full bodied palate. Firm, full, tannins on the longish finish. (2002 views)
Tasted by Thek on 5/28/2021 & rated 93 points: Same notes as previous bottle, really like this one (1258 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 5/15/2021 & rated 93 points: Wish I had more. Another excellent vintage for the Nuts and Bolts syrah. Dark fruit, leather, mocha and some smokey oak. Drinking nicely at this stage. (1197 views)
Tasted by FlavioSFL on 4/29/2021 & rated 93 points: Youthful, showing sharp blueberry, plum, spice and oak on the nose and palette. Tight core of fruit unwinding after 2.5 hour decant. High alcohol, but ample juicy fruit and refreshing acidity bring balance. Beautifully glides over the palette. (1184 views)
Tasted by Chied on 4/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Wow!!! Could be an even higher score, but maybe it’s because we attended Catholic schools!!! Very tough graders, no curves... (1176 views)
Tasted by Thek on 3/7/2021 & rated 93 points: Color: deeply inky and opaque. Nose: hot oak tempered by cool floral notes. Palate: this wine is a full-frontal assault on your taste buds. Possibly the most intense flavor profile I've ever experienced. Flavors include blueberry, boysenberry, high alcohol but the other flavors are intense enough to balance creating a hot fruit experience. I never really knew why people described syrahs as tasting like bacon fat until I tried this wine. There is a surprising balance between savory fat flavors, hot booziness, inky blue fruit, and light florals. I don't know how it all works, but it just does. Not at all for the elegant crowd. (1282 views)
Tasted by Screameagle on 2/11/2021 & rated 94 points: Drinking great despite being so young right out of the bottle. Loved it. (1269 views)

2018 Herman Story Syrah Nuts & Bolts

NUTS & BOLTS
VINTAGE: 2018
VARIETAL: Syrah
AVA: California
OAK: 85% New French Oak
TASTING NOTES: After several steins of lager last night, it’s a miracle the man is standing, let alone baking some of the best damn sweet rolls you’ll ever taste. He shut down the bar at two and was warming up his ovens at four, blasting German death metal and whistling along. Approach the counter, you’ll get a grunt and a nod, but never a smile. Behind him, the ruins of his drunken experiments – berliners full of black garlic, prosciutto-wrapped canalé, fennel scones. Mere hours ago his tattooed arms were braced against sticky bars and wrapped around gyrating bodies, but now he’s serving espresso, brown sugar strudel, and black licorice cookies. Does he ever sleep? Is he still drunk? You might never know, but when you bite into that flaky croissant, does it really matter?

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
