Tasted by prism on 5/17/2024 & rated 97 points: Among the very best Chardonnays I've had the joy of tasting. What a delicious and beautifully balanced wine! Great with food or on its own. Years ahead; drink or hold. (331 views)
Tasted by fdub on 3/30/2024 & rated 96 points: Delicious ripe round and impressive balance for a wine of this flavor intensity. Drinking great now but could go for a number of years. (1192 views)
Tasted by tomoem on 2/6/2024 & rated 95 points: I opened tonight a rich and medium viscous wine. It starts with a nose of citrus, some apricot, and lemon. In mouth the wine is creamy and delivers a mouthfeel of textured viscosity. I get some minerality in the mid palette from lemon, wet limestone and apricot nut. A trully enjoyable complex wine.  Tasted by denniswdern@gmail.com on 1/2/2024 & rated 94 points: Straw colored. Moderate aroma intensity. Aromas of apple, lemon, pineapple and, to a much lesser extent, pastry. High acidity and high alcohol. Pronounced flavors consistent with the aromas. Long finish. (1862 views)
Tasted by prism on 12/15/2023 & rated 95 points: Stood upright for 24 hours; double-decanted over a few hours; served at 58°. Outstanding Chardonnay; characteristically Aubert. Full-bodied without being heavy. (1616 views)
Tasted by Sieegs on 12/6/2023 & rated 97 points: glad I have more! (1853 views)
Tasted by mgstull on 6/23/2023 & rated 94 points: Pale gold. Toffee, pineapple, and tropical fruit give way to a distinct lemon note on the long finish. (3008 views)
Tasted by Twopawsup on 6/10/2023 & rated 97 points: Deep lemon/gold color with slow legs. Honey, butterscotch, apricot and orange blossom on the nose. Melon, cantaloupe, green apple and pear on the palate. Long creamy finish. (2673 views)
Tasted by Dpark8 on 3/7/2023 & rated 94 points: Seseme lime oak vanilla. Good acidity peach
Delicious (3153 views)
Tasted by kkleg on 2/5/2023 & rated 93 points: White tea and peaches on the nose. The palate is really balanced with fruit and cinnamon notes. Subtle wine, with a really long finish. Hides the 15.1% alcohol really well. Not as flavorful as some White Burgs and other higher end California Chards (Williams Selyem, for example), but gets an extra point for the finish.

Not sure this is worth $100; $75 would be a better price point for what’s here. (2967 views)
Tasted by royalscam on 2/1/2023 & rated 95 points: Just outstanding and worth every penny! (2887 views)
Tasted by Schiffy on 1/26/2023 & rated 96 points: Rich citrus fruit, creamy mouthfeel with complex notes of wet stone, lemon, apricot and nutmeg. Another amazing wine from Aubert. (2419 views)
Tasted by krhaugh on 12/25/2022 & rated 94 points: Started off Christmas Eve with this beautiful wine. Very deep golden color with a solid Chardonnay nose of lemon, lime, a little butterscotch and rose. In the mouth, beautiful juice that is one of the most balanced Chard's I have every had. Delicious.  Tasted by cpl100n on 12/24/2022 & rated 95 points: Wow pop & pour sweet fruit great structure
Sorry I only have 3 more Aubert 2019 (1993 views)
Tasted by jviz on 12/17/2022 & rated 94 points: It’s nice to see that this wine is improving in bottle so far. My last one was about 18 months ago and I really felt the oak needed to relax. It has, and the wine is in great shape.

This was served at a party with horrible stemware and still seemed to jump from the glass. Big in every sense but not confected. Sweet vanillin tones, creamed pears, maybe a little pistachio and pineapple marked this bottle. It was really delicious and went fast! (2324 views)
Tasted by msuwine on 12/14/2022 & rated 95 points: This ripe and fulsome is all kinds of Aubert goodness: if "rocky" and "subtle" are your watchwords for white wines, look elsewhere (but you probably already knew that). For the rest of us, this wine has fruit, acidity, depth, and energy galore. I think this probably needs another 1-2 years (and I'm sure others would recommend more), but there's no doubt that Powder House belongs among the Aubert lineup. It's not Lauren (though apparently the vineyard is next-door), and it reflects the round breadth of its clones (Wente and Mt. Eden)... but damn it's good.

Golden yellow in color and full in body (did you expect anything else at 15.1% alcohol?), the wine offers aromas of cantaloupe, lemon meringue, and honeycomb. To the nose, this might be any blowsy CA Chardonnay - but, in the mouth, the refinement is obvious. The flavors are luscious but defined, with notes of golden delicious apple, orange marmalade, almond peel, and creme brûlée (the crispy part on top), with a finish that goes on and on - almost like a well-executed full-court press in basketball, it's everywhere and energetic all at once. 94-95 right now, with upside in 2024 and later.

P.S. I tasted this on the same night as a 2019 Peter Michael Belle Cote, a pleasant mountain wine that could only hold a sparkler to the fireworks of the Aubert. I get it: Aubert might fly too close to the sun - entailing all the risks of ambition and imbalance and disaster - but, if you're able to find your way back to earth, the experience is worth it all: what a view, what a flight, what a wine...  Tasted by DWStyle on 8/7/2022 & rated 97 points: Just as good as the previous bottle, 97+ unfortunately my last one. (3686 views)
Tasted by DWStyle on 7/30/2022 & rated 97 points: A lite golden color, clear, with a bouquet of white flowers, lemon and tangerine zest. Medium mouth feel, though not at all weighted. Firm bead of activity surrounded by citrusy fruit - lemon, pear, green apple and a slight touch of tangerine zest.
Acidity is pronounced although not overwhelming, leading to a wine that is balanced. The finish has a delicate acidity and fruit battle going on. Leaving the taster ( or drinker ;) with a craving for another glass! (2867 views)
Tasted by Mark1npt on 2/11/2022 & rated 95 points: Brought by JimAronson to the tasting tonight....pnp to a mid weight oak driven, tropical fruit beauty.1-2 hours in the glass and the oak leaves, replaced by pineapple, banana and vanilla. This is a very nice chard but def needs some air time once you pop that cork. And Carol really loved it! Thanks for bringing, James. (5411 views)
Tasted by Wine_Poobah on 1/1/2022 & rated 97 points: Intense tropical fruit aroma (mango, pineapple, vanilla) — almost smells like a Riesling! Complex tropical flavor, but more “green” than the aroma with some skins and stems, also peaches and plantains? Incredibly long finish, full of flavor and minerality. Just a hint of oak influence (not too much, but it’s definitely present). Well balanced with clean, crisp acidity and excellent weight / texture / viscosity.

I suspect this will improve and recommend holding for now. I will buy again for sure.

I think the UV-SL Chardonnay is slightly better, but I’m splitting hairs. (3747 views)
Tasted by greg@newsomehh.com on 12/8/2021 & rated 94 points: Aubert makes the best chards lovely (4103 views)
Tasted by huevosconvino on 8/23/2021 & rated 97 points: Decanted for 3 hours, then tasted slowly as the wine warmed up from cool cellar temperature. I feel like I start all my tasting notes this way lately. Aromas of jasmine and citrus. Smoky, oaky lime pulp flavors with interesting secondary notes of blood orange and lychee. Those flavors are quite subtle but that seems to be where the sweet mouthfeel comes from, which balances the sour lime nicely. Taken together, these elements remind me of a high-end mezcal margarita, but that's not a fair comparison so just ignore that bit. Definitely a personal favorite from the Aubert lineup. I concur with other tasting notes: Hold this wine for now, or at least decant for 3 hours first to let everything emerge a bit. (4944 views)
Tasted by jviz on 8/15/2021 & rated 93 points: Of the 19s I’ve tasted so far, the Powder house seems to have the most makeup. Younger vines with fairly green, energetic fruit, but quite a thick layer of noticeable barrel toast and a hint of gun flint. The acidity is there, in keeping with the LH&S and Eastside. I continue to think the 19s are my fave vintage of Aubert since 2014, and will keep longer than the latter, but the Powder House in particular needs longer before it settles down. (4671 views)
Tasted by huevosconvino on 7/23/2021 & rated 97 points: Decanted for 90 minutes before I approached this wine. Wow, amazing aromas: focused, not too oaky, and with secondary notes of marzipan with a smoky/salty texture. On the palate, the citrus is light and takes a back seat to the peach, vanilla, and yellow fruit flavors. Finished a bit dry, like a lemon twist or cocktail grapefruit. I think this wine will evolve a lot over a few hours (or after a day or two under vacuum seal after double decanting). There's a lot going on here. It's not as mouthwatering as the CIX but these are very different wines and that's not a criticism. This wine is just as good...wish I could have a side-by-side comparison of the two! (3504 views)
Tasted by huevosconvino on 4/30/2021 & rated 98 points: I decanted this wine for 2.5 hours before tasting and it definitely needs that much time. What strikes me, after trying a few bottles recently, is how much this wine reminds me of "MeloGold" grapefruit, which is a Pomelo/white grapefruit cross. It sounds weird and specific, I know, but I love MeloGold and Oro Blanco grapefruit. The latter is also a Pomelo/white grapefruit cross, but the Oro Blanco tends more to the white grapefruit side of that hybrid. The MeloGold is definitely more like a Pomelo, and that's what this wine reminds me of: rich, sweet mouthfeel with strong acidity, a bit of zest, and a tangy bite that's reminiscent of the MeloGold pulp. Unreal. I'm not suggesting this wine is one dimensional, though: Toasty, oaky notes mingle with the citrus, and there are other yellow and white fruits and flowers mixed in. The grapefruit recedes a bit after 3 hours and as the wine warms up in the glass. I wish I had more of this release. (4285 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
