Tasted by Ralphs Bar on 1/7/2024: More interesting than it has any right to be, light and silky with red berries. (290 views)

The body is a little watery. (484 views)

Tasted by Joeyskills on 4/29/2023 & rated 80 points: This is not good. Taste like grape juice gone slightly bad. Could have been a bad bottle but nothing to compare it to (701 views)
Tasted by gkpaoli on 2/4/2023: Blackberry and hops. (49 views)
Tasted by Shavedaddy on 12/5/2022 & rated 91 points: tiniest bit of brown starting to creep in. otherwise, transparent almost like a watered down barolo or something. this bottle had a great deal of sediment on the cork, but decanting with a fine metal strainer left no discernable negative effect on the wine.

the nose is something that i can't quite place, but is extremely specific. the red haribo gummi bears? cherry jolly rancher? that's what hits me first, but there's nice cranberry, raspberry, and some herbal-y (barrel?) spice-y notes nicely integrated as well.

wonderful balance between ripeness and freshness in the fruit. minerally (at least what i think people mean by that hah). super silky mouthfeel, like if you suck on a haribo gummi bear, where it's almost a thick, silky, glycerin-y feel. but i'm fairly sure the effect is accomplished via alternative means. absolutely dry wine, despite my gummi bear comparisons. finish isn't quite as impressive as everything else with this wine so far, which is maybe the only let down in my opinion.

wonderful food wine, extremely quaffable. love this wine. (764 views)
Tasted by Chill51 on 11/24/2022 & rated 89 points: Served as a pre - Thanksgiving dinner wine with appetizers of cheeses and cured meat. A crowd favorite among my guests, always have a bottle in the cellar. (663 views)
Tasted by Chill51 on 10/28/2022 & rated 88 points: In my opinion, the 2016 vintage was better than this one. I found the nose to be of tropical fruit. First sips were bright and lacking the usual red berry fruit. The finish was long and a little dry compared to other vintages. As the bottle opened up, started to get the red berry fruit, but slight. Had numerous prior vintages of this wine, and this one is definitely different. Still an enjoyable and fun wine to drink. Paired with a vegetarian farro and spinach dish (649 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 8/15/2022: Meh… (650 views)
Tasted by Madera16 on 6/25/2022: Very good. Prefer the ‘16, this one has a tiny touch of heat, a bit more alcohol. But still classic. (727 views)
Tasted by jbs712 on 4/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Was introduced to the Grignolino at a Heitz-sponsored tasting in Miami — one of the most interesting California wines I’ve ever had, and to me it dominated the evening. Has the silkiness of a fine Barolo, but a display of fruit like a well-aged Pinot. Distinctive notes of strawberry, cinnamon and a hint of spice, with a pronounced balance and structure that was evident even in its relative infancy. Unbelievable that Heitz is offering a wine of this quality at this price point—its a gem. (567 views)
Tasted by midiprincess on 2/21/2022 & rated 91 points: Strawberries and peach blossoms. Light bodied but medium tannins give it structure. Really nice. (547 views)

Grignolino

Producers in the Asti region try to model Grignolino on the wines of Beaujolais and those made from the Dolcetto grape in the Cuneo. These light bodied, pale colored wines are made to be consumed young and while waiting for the brawnier, Nebbiolo and Barbera based wines of the region to age. While the grapes are relatively low in alcohol at around 11-12% ABV, they do have a significant amount of tannins due to the abundance of pips, or seeds. Modern winemaking techniques try to minimize the amount of tannin extraction by utilizing slow and gentle pressings. Wines made from Grignolino can have noticeably strong acidity and fruity aroma with alpine notes.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
