Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.9 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 195 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Dr S on 2/11/2024 & rated 92 points: The stalwart delivers (from a 375 ml half bottle). Good purple/red core with rim fading to crimson.

Hard to say whether I like the nose or the palate more. Both impress, given the modest price tag.

Dry spice, pepper and char mingle with (Grenache) raspberry, strawberry hovering in the background. Composed.

A similarly dry, savoury palate. Touch of liquorice to the above characters. Not only avoids the porty excess of some (many?) CdRs but better still exhibits fine tannins and good line - especially for the price, back in the day (it seems Guigal have cottoned on to ‘international pricing’ and adjusted upwards, alas). Drinking agreeably well now but a few extra years wouldn’t hurt.

Ever since tasting a 1997 Jaboulet Parallele 45 CdR with 20 odd years or so age, I’ve been on the hunt for a good value CdR to buy in bulk and consign most to the cellar. This would have been a reasonable candidate. Me thinks the 2015 even more so. A good Komrade bought a stash of the 15s. I must remind him of what a good deserving pal I am. (778 views)
Tasted by cobbpa on 1/12/2024 & rated 87 points: Much respect for this budget bottle. From magnum, given a couple hours of air in the bottle. Just med intensity but nice cool red cherry & dried black fruit tones beneath some earth & woodsy herb. Palate isn't as giving or "fun" as some CdR might be expected to be, but has good structure and spice/earth tones. I like it. Easy, works on its own, better with food. (872 views)
Tasted by derekjohn on 12/2/2023 & rated 88 points: First of a new case.
Needs air; it's takes a while to open out.
Youthful dark purple red.
Fresh nose of violets, metallic tin, geranium leaves.
Tannins softening, medium-full body, blueberry/cranberry fruit.
As ever a benchmark for Southern Rhone wines with a good QPR. (1066 views)
Tasted by Casa HeRo on 11/25/2023 & rated 90 points: Kirsebær, moreller, blåbær, litt fat, jordkjeller og krydder i nesa.
Fin og myk kjøttfull frukt av mørke bær i munnen. Medium syre og tanninstruktur som gjør denne kraftig nok til svin og kalv, men myk nok bare å ha i glasset. (953 views)
Tasted by gmac10 on 11/16/2023 & rated 81 points: Not a fan necessarily. Light dry flavor without much noticeable fruit or berry. Would not get this again, not because it's not good, it's just not our thing. It's dry and doesn't have the fruit and jamminess that we like. (1080 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 10/27/2023 & rated 89 points: It has lost some of its roughness, it is getting smoother. Otherwise, no change to previous notes. (886 views)
Tasted by trvlgirl71 on 8/14/2023 & rated 75 points: Peppery, not real tannic, (1261 views)
Tasted by AGELVIS on 8/13/2023 & rated 89 points: PNP. Deep dark magenta color. Mixed berry pie. Firm, full, lower intensity tannins on the medium long+ finish.

This was a very serviceable business dinner wine. The ‘18 and ‘19 are notably better, but this is solid. (1767 views)
Tasted by Soteriologist on 5/2/2023 & rated 89 points: Not much to add to the excellent TN below this one dated April 28th, except that with a cellar like mine you might follow my plan to drink up until the end of 2025, and that I would opt for an 89, especially having directly compared with the 2015 and having given that one a 90. (1919 views)
Tasted by CC_H on 4/28/2023 & rated 90 points: Certainly not at the level of the superb 2015 & 2016 but another good CDR from Guigal. Opaque ruby in the glass. Earthy red and black fruits waft up on the nose along with toasty spice and roasted herbs. The palate is typically ripe and sumptuous displaying nicely defined fruit, crisp acidity and peppery licorice notes through the balanced and quite impressive finish. This took a little while to open up in the decanter but soon showed well. Will hold for at least another 3-5 years - Guigal classique. (1646 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 4/25/2023: Ripe and sweet, cloying finish. I love this wine some vintages, but not this one. (1798 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 3/7/2023 & rated 89 points: Bottle #3 of this vintage, no change in rating or comments from my previous notes. (1849 views)
Tasted by hfc on 3/5/2023: The wine has come to a soft point that the grenache is not so annoying now. (1721 views)
Tasted by imdanwyatt on 2/10/2023 & rated 88 points: Plum, black pepper, cola (1445 views)
Tasted by Hallvard91 on 1/22/2023 & rated 83 points: Nose: quite nice, lightly perfumed, mushroom.
Tasting: a little green even at 1 hour airing, tannins of unripe blackberries resulting in very dry finish. Nice body with some oak. Some meaty notes, pepper in finish. 83p (1603 views)
Tasted by Butzemann on 1/20/2023 & rated 89 points: D+0h: no deposit in the filter nor in the bottle, smells of blackberry and violets D+4h: purple red colour, smells of blackberry, violets and eucalyptus with a little bit of leather in the background, smooth in the mouth, medium body, has a certain residual sugar, so not completely dry, the 14,5% alcohol are well integrated, in the mouth blackberry, violets and a little bit of eucalyptus, in the aftertaste blackberry, eucalyptus, violets and acidity, good length (30 sec), really good red wine for the price. (625 views)
Tasted by Soteriologist on 1/1/2023 & rated 89 points: See my notes from 2021 and 2022. 3 bottles left. Happy New Year ! (1796 views)
Tasted by PaulusLoZebra on 11/17/2022 & rated 89 points: My second bottle of the 2017. This vintage isn’t up to the standards of the best vintages, as it is rougher, more rustic and unbalanced than the best. But it remains an outstnding QPR and remarkably consistent from year to year. (2173 views)
Tasted by MrChapman on 11/14/2022 & rated 92 points: Solid- spice box and oppulent body while retailing great acidity… fantastic food wine.
Mouth feel was solid and carmelesqe. (2043 views)
Tasted by MrChapman on 11/14/2022 & rated 92 points: Solid- spice and opulent fruit. Some Earth and caramel…
Total re-purchase! (1850 views)
Tasted by Worldb on 11/5/2022 & rated 89 points: Costco for 14$. Slightly rustic with fine rough tannins but a great nose of raspberries , cherries, earth and a little mint. Excellent qpr for a CdR of this quality. (1764 views)
Tasted by DrDave88 on 10/31/2022: Fruitier than notes suggest previous bottle a year ago was....maybe oak toned down slightly with an extra year in bottle. Bloody lovely though (1777 views)
Tasted by bprosenberg on 10/6/2022 & rated 92 points: Is it possible for a wine to be both elegant and rustic at the same time? This wine says yes! There’s some really nice fruit here (I pick up cherry), but also a leathery undertone that provides a solid foundation without overwhelming the fruit. It’s a bit like a Pinot Noir with a an earthy base, if that makes any sense. Paired with a roast chicken with a hearty pan gravy, rice, and a salad made from the fat drippings from the chicken—something that I usually pair with a Pinot, but this worked perfectly. I know my score is a bit high compared to the averages, but I really enjoyed this wine. And for the price, it’s a downright bargain! (1849 views)
Tasted by RKcellar on 10/4/2022 & rated 91 points: Slightly brickish red around the rim, slightly barnyardy or earthy on the nose with a bit of spice. Nice tannic structure present, medium acidity. raspberry and licorice on the palate. 14.5% abv (1674 views)
Tasted by kidsmurf2000 on 10/3/2022 & rated 90 points: Always good, haven't had for a few months, so enojyed more (1680 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
