Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 2/4/2024: First bottle from a three bottle lot purchased at the estate in 2017. A characteristic Silberlack, but this bottle does feel a bit low on definition and energy. Mature, waxy, not a huge amount of fruit expression, quite short and light on the finish. Retaste. No score for the moment. (819 views)
Tasted by michael@tastingsbymichael.com on 7/1/2023 & rated 90 points: This wine shows what you can expect from a Riesling of the region: fine notes of citric fruit, notes of petrol, a dry and fresh wine. This is not the best Riesling I have had, but it is a really good example. Schloss Johannisberg pretends being the oldest producer of Riesling. They have been in existence for several centuries, they know how to make good Riesling - but today, there are several producers that make even better Riesling than they do. TBM 90 points. (353 views)
Tasted by Germandrinkingteam on 11/27/2021 & rated 95 points: Top gereift, trinken! (696 views)
Tasted by SuperSomm on 10/16/2021: Medium gold colour. Medium (+) and developing nose with peach, apricot, yellow plum, honey melon, acacia, bread dough, candied lemon and autumn leaves. Medium (+) taste of green apples, lemon, autumn leaves and roasted hazelnuts. Long and dry finish. High acidity. Medium body. A very good Riesling GG with good complexity. Part of my WSET3 exam prep. Drink now or over the next five to ten years. Goes well with fish or shellfish. (140 views)
Tasted by kim@meko.ru on 6/4/2021 & rated 90 points: Notes later. (827 views)
Tasted by Obi-Wan Cannubi on 4/24/2021 & rated 89 points: Strågul, gylden.

Lett tropisk, frisk, syrlige epler og sitron. Noe urtete.

Moden frukt, noe tropisk frukt, god fylde, oljete preg, syren kommer men dempes av fedme i frukten. Sitron i bakkant. Lang, med noe bitter utgang.

God til innbakt svin og frityrstekt scampi med sursøt saus. (776 views)
Tasted by Vinophil2000 on 11/15/2019 & rated 89 points: Aus der Magnum.
(1107 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 5/1/2019 & rated 92 points: During a Germany/Austria tasting dinner with a few French friends. Unlike in a recent Napa Cabernet evening where we walked away disappointed with the expensive but unimpressive, sweetish wines, this evening was a big revelation. The Rieslings showed very well as expected but the big surprise was the high quality of the German Pinots. TN: Lovely, fresh with good fruit and acidity but after all a relatively straight forward wine for a GG. May be it will develop more complexity with age. (1542 views)
Tasted by chatters on 10/20/2018: 19th Canberra International Riesling Challenge (Albert Hall, Canberra): All spice over stone fruit and apple. Juicy, fleshy, peachy with apples backing. Lovely (1213 views)
Tasted by CBRwineguy on 10/20/2018 & rated 87 points: Canberra International Riesling Challenge (Albert Hall, Canberra): The appearance is clear and pale lemon in colour. Tears are visible.

The nose is clean. The aromas have a medium(-) intensity and show generic citrus fruit (lime?). The wine appears youthful.

On the palate, the wine is dry (~6g/L RS) with medium(+) acidity, medium alcohol, and medium(-) body. The flavours have a medium intensity and show notes of citrus fruit (lime, subtle lemon) and autolytic characters (cheese rind). The finish has a medium(+) length, and shows an additional note of charcuterie.

This is a very good quality wine. The flavours are concentrated and are well-balanced with the alcohol and the acidity. In its current state, the primary characters are more dominant that the secondary notes. The charcuterie note on the finish was surprising and may be related to the use of sulphur.

The wine drinks well now, but has potential for further ageing. The fruit concentration is great and the acid structure should support the wine as tertiary notes develop. (1085 views)
Tasted by Benjamin on Wine on 5/4/2018 & rated 84 points: Once again a great Riesling from Schloss Johannisberg. As well as the 2015 vintage, this has the herbaceous notes and floarality. But more fruity aromas like, white fruit, peach, pear, nectarine and lemon. Medium + acidity and light body. Crispy acidity and great flavours (953 views)

The Key to the Colors

Gelblack (yellow seal): QbA
Rotlack (red seal): Kabinett
Grünlack (green seal): Spätlese
Silberlack (silver seal): 1.Gewächs (first growth)
Rosalack (pink seal): Auslese
Rosa-Goldlack (pink-gold seal): Beerenauslese
Goldlack (gold seal): Trockenbeerenauslese
Blaulack (blue seal): Eiswein

Lagenbeschreibung:

Rheingau – Single vineyard Schloss Johannisberg. The totally south-facing vineyard is steep as 45 degrees and climbs from 114 meters to 181 meters above sea level. The forest on top of the Taunus protects the vineyards from cold winds from the North and in the South the Rhine lays like a lake in front of the estate on the foothills. The 50 degree parallel (of earth) runs directly through the vineyard and the unique soil formation with Taunusquarzit topped with loam and rich loss is perfect for mineral Rieslings to keep water and temperature very well.

#2014 Vintage Notes:
2014 Vintage Report by Terry Theise
2014 Vintage Report by Wine Spectator
"My gut still tells me the Saar (and to some extent) the Ruwer are better overall in 2014 than the more storied areas of the Mosel proper, but those that spent the requisite time living in their middle-Mosel vineyards made some of the most electric and "feathery" Riesling in a long time (maybe the finest in 20 years - yes, it's true!)" - Jon Rimmerman (Of course only a very short historical memory would call the Saar and Ruwer less 'storied' than the middle Mosel - jht)

Rheingau

VDP Rheingau (Official site) | The Rheingau (Wines of Germany) | Wikipedia about The Rheingau
On weinlagen.info

The small but fine wine-growing area Rheingau offers one for the culture of the vine ideal microclimate and best soil conditions. The Rhine runs uninterruptedly almost one thousand kilometres from Basel up to its muzzle into the North Sea, in a northerly direction. With a short exception - the Rheingau. The Rheingau mountains force the river to a change in direction here. The vineyards falling in this region to the south stretch really to the sun. The king of the white wines, the Riesling, finds ideal local conditions for the unfolding of his fine fruity and elegant type of vine character on the multilayered weathering grounds with loess, loam and sand additions.
