Tasted by Stroudcloud on 2/16/2024 & rated 88 points: Decanted for 30 min.
Dark ruby color with moderate+ concentration, pink rim and some light staining to the tears.
Not a terribly expressive nose but there is some soy sauce/glaze, beef jerky, tobacco, black cherry n plum, turned earth also. After an hr plus there’s some dead leaves and a light poopy funk.
Structure is med+ across the board (2240 views)
Tasted by Necowine on 2/14/2024 & rated 88 points: From glass. Cool dark fruit, hints of bramble and peppery spice, firm acidity and mild tannins. Very nice CdR. (2101 views)
Tasted by CCris6537 on 1/27/2024 & rated 91 points: Medium ruby, peppers, black plums, black cherries, cherry jam, vanilla, cream, rich fruit flavor, strong acidity, tight and concentrated body. (612 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 1/27/2024 & rated 90 points: This is solid overall with rustic in nature. Forest floor, cherry, pepper, spices and earth. Medium finish and good acidity. Drink now to 2028. (2420 views)
Tasted by wkasimer on 12/21/2023 & rated 92 points: I think I need to add this one to my list of favorite go to’s. Not wanting to add wordiiness to all of these fine reviews, I will chime in to say dark fruit yet with acid and very fine tenants in a long finish. Bravo. (2515 views)
Tasted by GiorgosD on 10/19/2023 & rated 91 points: Sec, plutôt puissant, acidité moyenne, moyennement tannique, fruit noire. Sucre 2,4g/L (2910 views)
Tasted by ThijsPiet on 10/13/2023 & rated 91 points: Full body, great mouth filling taste. Nutty, black fruit and a nice long dry finish. (2156 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 9/22/2023 & rated 90 points: Pnp. Deep plummy purple. Long legs. Tart red fruits, fresh garrigue, sandalwood and fresh tobacco on the nose. Medium bodied, good fruit extract, balanced alcohol and acidity, supple tannins. Very dry finish. Flavours of tangy red and black fruits with lots of skins, woody herbs, spicy oak tannins, black earth and hrape pomace. Tastey and young. (2435 views)
Tasted by Dukes88 on 8/7/2023 & rated 90 points: Really good for it price… definetly worth the extra few $ to upgrade from CdR. Primary, red fruited, nice acidity good balance. (2845 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 8/2/2023 & rated 89 points: PnP. Deep, rich dark red. No signs of age; just of the melange of grapes. Lovely nose of black and red berries, dried red plum, robust fresh garrigue, black loam and mulch, and wet stones. Later on there is a touch of sandlewood at the end. Medium bodied, tangy juicy fruit, supple tannins, some squeeky oak influence and a moderately long finish. Flavours of juicy black and red berries, woody garrigue, mild oak spice, and a nice dry / tart finish. A little thin on the back palate, but a nice quaff! (2451 views)
Tasted by depdoc on 7/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully but needs at least 2 hours of decanting to smooth out. (2177 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 3/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Classic Cotes du Rhone. Drinking well right now and way above the price point. I should have bought a full case. (3239 views)
Tasted by Vine on 3/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Drinking beautifully now. (3203 views)
Tasted by jonahfactor on 2/27/2023: A beautiful, harmonious wine. Decanting for three hours opened ‘er up nicely, and she’ll likely go for another decade. Mulled spices and dark fruit that coat the palate, although the finish is surprisingly light. Food friendly and a very good value. And just plain delicious. Drink now to 2032. Outstanding (3110 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 2/10/2023 & rated 92 points: Under cork. Very dark plummy red in colour. Beautiful warm Southern Rhone nose! Gobs of sweet dark red fruit, plum, mulberry, sweet cherry, garrigue, fennel fronds, and toasted, chocolatey oak. Full bodied, sweet ripe fruit, cool alcohol, supple tannins and perfect acidity. Perfect alignment between the nose and the palate. The fruit is sweet, dark and ripe, yet has a a nice bitter edge to it. Great balance and body. My only slight quibble is that it finishes a little thin body-wise. Otherwise, a lovely, very tasty tipple! Easy 92 points (3164 views)
Tasted by hkbob on 1/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Opaque reddish-purple. Fragrant floral profile, with predominantly red cherry fruit, herbal, licorice and iodine notes. Intense red fruit on the palate finishing with ferocious tannins. Presented much better on day 2 when those tannins had settled down and provided a more pleasurable overall drinking experience. No denying the wealth of fruit here but it needs several more years in the cellar or a very long decant to get at it. Lots to look forward to, especially considering the price. (3259 views)
Tasted by Jonprst on 1/8/2023 & rated 89 points: This wine has a medium ruby color and is clear without sediment. On the nose it is bright red cherry with some spice and a faint fleshy meat under tone. On the palate, bright and juicy red fruit are up front with a fine white pepper in the mid palate. The finish is medium in length. This is a nicely balanced wine. I would like to see what this looks like in another 5 years. I’ll set another bottle down and read this then! (2598 views)
Tasted by Hickey987 on 12/4/2022 & rated 88 points: Decanted for 3 hours before drinking. Similiar flavors as before but better overall. (3270 views)
Tasted by Hickey987 on 11/15/2022 & rated 85 points: Smooth, dry, dark fruit with a hint of sweetness. Not much going on other than initial taste, a little boring (3085 views)
Tasted by kfrench150 on 10/21/2022 & rated 90 points: PnP. Deep maroon reddish black. Nice and clear, but with great depth of colour. Youthful and exuberant nose of crushed red and black berries, fresh garrigue, sandalwood, graphite, coco nibs and a floral note as well on the nose. Fresh and fruity yet with depth and complexity at the same time. Very inviting and intriguing! Medium-full bodied, good acidity, sandy tannins, lots of fruit extract and just a little bit hot on the finish. All the elements are there bit are not integrated yet. Similar flavours as on the nose with red and black berries, sandlewood, more herbal than garrigue flavours, minerals and an overall sweet / savoury flavour profile. Quite lovely, but too young. Good bow but will be something special in 3 or 4 years. 90 points now with lots of upside potential. (3377 views)
Tasted by Alexander Smith on 10/10/2022 & rated 92 points: A wine which rarely disappoints and one which punches above its weight. Aromas of dark berry, cassis, blackcurrant, dark fruit compote, fresh herbs, tobacco and all spice. The palate is rich and energetic with dark lush fruit, along with crushed stones, dried herbs, tannins are rich yet finally grained, good mid-palate concentration finishing spicy. (3630 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 10/6/2022: Not in a great place at the moment. Nothing objectively wrong with it, but a bit anonymous. Hard to discern much of particular interest at this point. I'll bury these and wait a few years before trying another. (3124 views)
Tasted by maxima on 9/29/2022 & rated 87 points: Un peu moderne et un brin facile.
Boisé et vanillé avec de la chauffe en finale.
A déjà mieux paru. (3411 views)
Tasted by Androurse on 9/26/2022 & rated 89 points: The wine looks purple colored. The legs are slow. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like blackberry and fig. It tastes like blackberry, black currant (cassis), oak, vanilla and cinnamon. The body is medium/full. The wine has round texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has low acidity. (2556 views)
Tasted by chatters on 9/20/2022: Savoury, slightly baked red over black fruit with an earthy underpin. Juicy, fleshy, tight, slightly chalky tannins are a little too much for the dark and savoury fruit, travels long helped by a little alcohol warmth. Hmm (2383 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

__Coudoulet de Beaucastel Red__

Château de Beaucastel is located five kilometres south-east of Orange at the northern limit of the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation. The 30 hectares Coudoulet de Beaucastel vineyard lies just to the east of Beaucastel on the other side of the A7 autoroute. For reasons that will become evident, it is often referred to as a baby Beaucastel. When one looks at the geology of the soil at Coudoulet, the similarities with the soil at Beaucastel are legion. It is composed of a layer of marine limestone from the Miocene period, covered by a deposit of alpine diluvium. This blanket of rounded stones (or "galets") contributes much to the wines of Beaucastel: they retain the intense heat of the Mediterranean sun during the day then slowly disperse it to the vines during the night. They provide a head start to the vines in springtime. During the long Mediterranean summer, lack of water can stress the vineyard at times.

However, the resistance built into Beaucastel's vine stock from 30 years of continuous organic culture allows the vineyard to come through periods of drought with few problems. Because the soil is porous and aerated, the vineyards at Beaucastel have developed root systems that penetrate deep into the earth in their search for water.

Coudoulet, as Beaucastel, owes its ability to age to the high proportion of Mourvedre - about 30% - that makes up the final cuvée. This provides a tannic backbone and resistance to oxidation that ensures long life. In addition, Mourvedre introduces aromas of leather, tobacco, and spice to the blend. One should note also that the Beaucastel and Coudoulet vineyards are at the northern limit for growing Mourvedre, and it is well known that the best expressions of any varietal come from the cooler parts of their growing areas. The other main variety, Grenache, gives Coudoulet the rounded fullness and intense fruit that is typical of Côtes du Rhône. Syrah and Cinsault represent about 20% each and bring tannins and aromatic complexity to Coudoulet.

After careful hand harvesting, the grapes are transferred to the winery. Maceration takes place in enamel tiled vats over about 12 days before the free-run wine is taken off and a light pneumatic pressing applied. Each grape variety is kept separately until after malo-lactic fermentation, when the final blend is decided. The young wine continues to mature for about six months in large oak barrels or "foudres". In March following the vintage, the wine is fined with egg whites and bottled.

__Area of production__

Côtes du Rhône, adjoining the vineyard of Château de Beaucastel between Orange and Avignon. The Coudoulet vineyard is 30 hectares / 60 acres in size.

__Geology__

Miocene marine molasses with a layer of alpine diluvium (rounded pebbles).

__Grape varieties__

Grenache 30%, Mourvèdre 30%, Syrah 20%, Cinsault 20%.

__Vinification__

Hand picked harvest and sorted grapes which are then heated briefly to 30°C / 176°F before being cooled to 20°C / 68°F. Maceration in enamel tiled vats for twelve days. The juice is then drained off the rest pressed pneumatically.

__Maturing__

The different grape varieties, which have been vinified separately, are blended together after malo-lactic fermentation and matured for six to eight months in large oak barrels. The wine is bottled after fining with egg whites.

__Tasting notes__

Colour: bright and lively, with great depth.
Nose: red fruits.
Palate: Luscious, with hints of thyme.
