Tasted by kostaslonis on 10/31/2023: 2019 Bordeaux Tasting, MW tasting (Vintner's Hall, London): 87% CS 13% Mer, 14.50%
Big, smoky, black ripe fruit, pyrazine notes, some floral notes
Palate showing juicy big tannins, blue fruit, very bold, a touch dry, youthful, full body, long finish.
I'd love to see this grow (6271 views)
Tasted by SuperSomm on 7/29/2023: Deep ruby colour. Pronounced and developing nose with blackcurrant, green bell pepper, eucalyptus, black pepper, cloves, leather and tobacco. Pronounced taste of blackcurrant, blackberry, black pepper, cloves, leather and tobacco. Long and dry finish. High acidity. High tannins. Full body. An outstanding Pauillac with great potential. Drink in ten to twenty five years. Goes well with beef or lamb. (4071 views)
Tasted by merlotsmile on 5/23/2023: Bordeaux 23-05-23 (Left Bank): X (10677 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 3/25/2023 & rated 97 points: Knockout Baron, one of the best of their string of successes the last few years, and I might give it the edge over the Comtesse this year--at the very least, it's more characteristically itself. This is fully loaded; a Parkerism like "on steroids" is not inapt as it comes across thick and dense, packed with rich purple fruit, walnuts, and cedar. The fruit is saturating and glossy, enough to keep the structure buried, but also bright and piercing so it doesn't come off flabby despite its scale. (11675 views)
 Tasted by Rita’s Wine on 3/20/2023: 87% Cabernet, 13% Merlot. WE 100, D 100, WA 97. (2854 views)
Tasted by ubercuvee on 3/19/2023: Showed purer fruit than ’19 Lynch-Bages and much more intensity that 2019 GPL. Probably my favourite Pauillac in 2019 I’ve tried (include Lafite & Pichon Lalande) (8705 views)
Tasted by Romol on 2/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Decanted 2+ hours. From 375 ml bottle. A very good Pichon Baron even in this early phase. A slight heat was noticeable at the beginning, this got better the longer the wine was open. I would like to try a bottle in 10+ years. 94 pts. at the moment. (8671 views)
Tasted by Everything Ahead on 1/1/2023 & rated 97 points: Drinking amazingly well right now with a several hour decant and followed for 2 nights. This is the finest 2019 Bordeaux I have had, just edging out the Calon Segur in the palate/mouthfeel department. A pretty complete wine already, but will possibly be "perfect" in time (20+ years). So many distinct, fresh dark fruits (cassis, plum, blueberry, blackberry ... they are all in there) perfectly intermeshed with some minerals, charcoal, mint, cacao and even some floral notes (beach rose?). A long, smooth finish to die for, tannins surprisingly friendly at this stage. This is so regal and yet warm and inviting now, very different from the 2016 at a similar stage, I assume the vintage not the winemaking style accounts for the difference. It is hard to say whether the '16 or '19 will be better over the long haul but for nearer term enjoyment the '19 wins hands down. If you have several you owe it to your self to crack one soon, before it closes down. Fabulous young Bordeaux. Rating: 97+ (9341 views)
Tasted by Wine G on 12/2/2022 & rated 96 points: Certainly among the best bordeaux wines I have had, the deliciousness, depth and balance... but to be honest with myself, if I drank this blind next to a Leo Barton, and a Calon segur (for example), it might be really tough to tell which one is which.
Clearly a bordeaux of high pedigree. (7613 views)
Tasted by Cristal2000 on 9/21/2022 & rated 96 points: Gorgeous translucent purple in the glass, with aromas of creme de cassis, asian spices, violets, menthol and dank earth. Muscular, taut and impressive, this shines with rich and dense layers of dark fruit combined with excellent precision. All the earth and mineral driven components are there, along with huge, fine grained but gripping tannins that keep the flavor somewhat at bay. Super long finish. Had this PnP, and you can tell it's going to be shut down with some air. Needs to rest, but this will be excellent. (9966 views)
Tasted by novocane on 9/2/2022 & rated 94 points: From a 375mL, with lamb. Let sit in bottle 45min. Infanticide on the split, the full bottles in the cellar. 14.5% ABV

Nose: blackberry, pear and plenty of fumes.
Color: medium purple

Taste: blueberry, blackberry, dark chocolate, cigar, a little bit high acidity.

Overall a delicious wine, looking forward to the next bottle in 20 years. (7365 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 7/4/2022: Union des Grands Crus: The 2019 Pichon Baron poured at the UGC shows the value in having the opportunity to taste young wines on more than one occasion. Last tasted a year ago, I scored this 97 points. Today, two bottles are closed down brutally tight, though the palate remains dense, black-fruited, coal-filled, and inky. It finishes cool and pure, but this shows somewhat rough. So after this is done with its dormant phase, expect to see it emerge again - triumphantly! (10695 views)
Tasted by Purple Tooth on 7/1/2022: Theres nothing to see here for me. Showing a bit hot and way too young and unfair for me to pick on. At this stage, I am unimpressed though Im holding a few bottles. It will definitely be better with time for sure. but don't even think about drinking this for at least 10 years. HOLD HOLD (7190 views)
Tasted by Roger Patterson on 6/30/2022 & rated 92 points: Elegantly understated, ripe fruit, floral, spicy. Integrated tannings so okay to drink youngish. At LA UGC. (6568 views)
Tasted by SARED on 6/28/2022 & rated 94 points: UGC NY; 6/28/2022-6/29/2022: Others at the tasting enjoyed this more than me, putting this above the Lynch Bages. This felt less seamless to me than the Lynch Bages and the PLL tasted alongside it, but this had more power and interest at this young age. (6190 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/28/2022 & rated 94 points: UGC Bordeaux (Union Station - Chicago IL): Walk around tasting. Concentrated black fruit with enticing spice, this is so well balanced and nearly accessible now. Not quite as exciting/ vibrant/ interesting as Comtesse de Lalande, but close. (7994 views)
Tasted by repoper on 6/27/2022 & rated 98 points: Tasted this wine twice at two different events last week. First bottle was just off - not corked but off. At the UGC event in NYC the wine was stunning. Again the fruit and flowers dominate both the nose and mouthfeel. But this is one stunning wine packed with layers of fruit and is totally seamless with a finish that just won't quit. It was so good that I had to go back for a second tasting which just reconfirmed my opinion of the quality of this wine and vintage. Never have tasted young Bordeaux that are so drinkable now with tannins that are so fine and in total balance. (5201 views)
Tasted by WorldWinex on 4/11/2022 & rated 99 points: Union de Grand vin de Bordeaux 2019
(Brief review)
Almost the perfect wine, lets hope time wil reward this beauty) Very intense, toasted, purple fruit, complex Structured tannins, rich purple fruit, very intense, coffeebeans, mocha, very long finish (6879 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/29/2022 & rated 98 points: Power and refinement, the hallmarks of all the great vintages of Pichon Baron are what you find here. Almost opaque in color, the wine exudes blackberries, black currants, tobacco leaf, cedar, wet forest, black pepper, and hints of flowers. On the palate, the wine is multi-layered with waves of dark red and black fruits, regal tannins, and a seamless finish that refuses to quit. Rich, luscious, concentrated, and with a remarkable purity of fruit, this is going to age and develop for decades. Yet, as its tannins are so soft and right, for a wine at this level of quality from Pichon Baron, it will drink well relatively early. With Cabernet Sauvignon checking in at 87% of the blend, this is the highest percentage of Cabernet in the blend in the history of the estate. Drink from 2030-2060. (7805 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 3/15/2022 & rated 92 points: Amsterdam UGCB Tasting (Beurs van Berlage): Classic Pauillac, lovely 2019 freshness, crisp Cabernet fruit, medium body, (much) more power and weight than the Comtesse, slightly stalky and quite tannic on the finish though. Good but not great. (6621 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 3/15/2022 & rated 94 points: UGCB 2019 tasting (Amsterdam): Classical wine with beautiful dark berries, luxurious oak and cedar. Firm acidity and tannin. (6279 views)
Tasted by wineforth on 3/3/2022 & rated 97 points: Lord's 2019 in bottle tasting. Another huge score and another fabulous 2019 nose. Relatively soft possibly due to higher Merlot content and the nature of the vintage, good fruit and a v.v. long finish. Baron used to be a more muscular 20% Merlot. (5162 views)
Tasted by vvWine.ch on 1/13/2022 & rated 98 points: 98 vvPunkte (87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Merlot, 14.5%. 2025-2050 vvWine.ch (7628 views)
Tasted by ctwinenj on 10/30/2021: Mistake - wrong vintage (6654 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 9/14/2021 & rated 97 points: The 2019 Pichon Baron sports an amazingly vital nose, full of fresh wild raspberry, cassis, and gravel. Round in the mouth with gentle, suave tannin and such balance that there is no perceptible heat. This finishes long and pure. A Baron to watch…

Vineyard map

Background: Pichon Longueville Baron stretches out on beautiful land with soil made of gravels from la Garonne river in the south of the appellation, on a plateau that serves as a transition between the commune of Pauillac and Saint-Julien. Planted with vines since the late seventeenth century, it became almost immediately famous. Produced by Jacques de Pichon Baron de Longueville, the wines of Pichon Baron were challenging the quality of those of Latour in the early eighteenth century. Promoted Second Cru Classé in 1855, the estate is divided for the inheritance, and the wines are vinified separately since 1860: Raoul, only surviving son of the Baron Joseph, takes the helm of the current Pichon Longueville Baron, often called "Pichon Baron," while his daughter Virginia, wife of Comte de Lalande, receives the other portion of the property, hence the name of her part : Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
