Clearly old Bordeaux with an engaging Cab Franc streak, so I thought St Emilion, lots of meat and earth, making me think this slightly older, probably late 1970s. Very good now. (752 views)

Medium acidity with notes of underwood, cherries, cassis, tobacco, and savory on the palate. The tannins are integrated but still provide good structure. Long and lingering finish. Très ligérien, en finesse et en fraîcheur, ce Bordeaux, étonnant de singularité nous a franchement bluffé.
Peu habitué à Cheval Blanc, reconnu pour son cabernet franc atypique, j’ai été charmé par sa présence palpable : poivron, Epices, sous-bois, mousse de chêne… La table, quelqu’un a parlé de La Dioterie, et j’ai aussi fait le lien (1990!).
En bouche, sa grande finesse de tanin et la sensation de fraîcheur m’éloignait encore plus de Saint-Émilion, mais peut-être l’âge du vin accentuait cette impression.
Subjectivement, un vin de Bordeaux de cette classe, raffiné et frais, c’est Byzance! (1831 views)

Opened on the evening before. Fully mature, tannins are mostly resolved, lovely freshness and energy, good fruit, orange peel, marvellous tertiary aromatic evolution, transparent and precise, has lost a lot of weight but not its harmony or precision, fills out with oxygen, good length. It was amazing then, but to sit and explore a bottle of this over a few hours with dinner and a good friend is a special treat. Thanks Adrian. The perfumed descriptor is absolutely spot on here - it's one of those wines I could sit and just breathe in for a while, with dark fruit, leather, cedar wood, and lightly greener forestal notes coming together into an incredible scent. It's at a plateau of maturity - the tannins seem fully integrated and very silky, and most of the structure seems to come from the acidity. Wonderful to follow over a few hours, though it feel a touch bitter and leaner in my last glass of the night (about 6 hours after it had been opened). (2314 views)

Effusive nose that shows ripe fruit and mature pyrazines that express more like perfume than anything green. The fruit is ripe on the palate, and there are modest leathery notes on the palate, but the tannins are fully resolved and this is pure, classic Cheval Blanc silkiness. Light and elegant, but despite the lightness still very much intense in flavour profile. Archetypal Cheval Blanc at its best. (2836 views)

 Tasted by melvinyeowq on 9/9/2022 & rated 95 points: Beat the '90 La Chapelle: On opening it was very Cheval, ripe and hedonistic with huge dollops of concentrated red fruit and an obvious leather note that reminded me of the other Chevals that I had before. But over time it developed a tannic bite so I followed the crowd to change my guess to 1995 Margaux given the vintage characteristics. After revealing, the sexiness returned again and the last glass was the best, an incredibly youthful showing for this wine with its structure remaining very much intact even after more than 35 years. Expressive floral nose from get-go but tannins seemed to be drying initially which lead me to guess this as the ‘95 Margaux! Shame on me as I have drunk this wine more than a dozen times. After a couple of hours, the tannins soften and this kept on improving on the palate, based on this bottle, still quite some miles to go. (2059 views)

At opening, offered a musty old library smell but that blew off, yielding enchanting aromas of dark fruit, tobacco, cherry jolly rancher, soy sauce, and leather. Medium body, medium acid, well integrated tannins. The palate led with great cherry liqueur fruit interwoven with tobacco, soy sauce, leather, and a hint of anise. Everything wonderfully integrated. Nose is profoundly deep confit blackcurrant and redcurrant, cedar shingles in the sunshine, some blackcurrant liqueur. Complex and mesmerising.. palate is similar confit depth of red-black fruit but enhanced by dried ground Asian spices…. nutmeg, galangal, liquorice, red chilli. Great length but one step below 'silence creating'. This seems to be completely at its peak drinking right now judging from the 8 times I have regularly drank it since 2013. 93+ (1864 views)

 Tasted by pclin on 3/23/2022 & rated 97 points: PnP. From the same case as previous 2 bottles. Explosive floral nose from onset, typical Cheval Blanc and Cabernet Franc funk. The palate was slightly lean on first pour but this continued to put on weight and complexity throughout 2.5 hours lunch, went perfectly with Florentine T-Bone steak. This wine never disappoints. Exceptional showing again. No sign of fading by the end of the lunch, prime time now but should last for years with its impeccable balance. If this is not wine of the vintage then I don’t know what is. (2342 views)

 Tasted by Magnum PI on 1/8/2022 & rated 97 points: Brookie and I enjoyed this bottle with our friends Tyler and Masey. This is Tyler's birth year and as with every year, we have a little get together for Tyler's birthday. We decanted this bottle and enjoyed a quick sip right out of the bottle. Tyler made drunken noodles which were fantastic, and we gave the wine about 45 minutes of air.

We all had different notes, from burnt rubber, to green vegetal, tobacco, but everyone agreed it was a superior wine still drinking in its prime. Years to go I would say. Fantastic from start to finish, with no real short comings. (2761 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Saint Emilion Grat Classified Growth, Classified Growths, Grands Crus Classes, GCC

In 1954, while the "Graves" growths had just published their own classification, the wine syndicate of Saint-Emilion, composed by wine growers, brokers and wine traders with the approval of the INAO - Institut National des Appellations d'Origine (A.O.C), decided to work on a classification for the wines of Saint Emilion. Initially, four grades were defined. These were reduced to two - First Great Classified Growth (A and B) and Great Classified Growth - in 1984.

As of Medoc's 1855 historical grading, the Saint-Emilion Great Classified Growth classification is not only based on qualitative criteria by tasting the wines on a ten years period previous to the assessment, but also on commercial considerations such as:
- sales price levels
- national and international commercial distribution
- the estate's reputation on the market

Properties who don't manage to join the club of about sixty Classified Growths are given the denomination of Great Growth ("Grand Cru"), while the remaining wineries of the A.O.C are simply reported as "Saint-Emilion". It is to be noted that the owners must officially apply to appear in the official classification. Thus for example the famous Chateau Tertre-Roteboeuf, whose quality and reputation would easily justify to be listed among the First Great Classified Growths, does not appear here by the will of its owner, François Mitjaville.

The Saint-Emilion Great Growth classification was revised in 1969, 1985, 1996 and 2006. The only two guaranteed vintage (A.O.C) who can apply to the classification are the "Saint-Emilion Grand Cru" and "Saint-Emilion" areas.

By grading 61 properties, the 2006 revision confirmed many growths from the former classification, but also caused a number of surprises and a few inevitable disappointments. Many observers thought that the impressive progression of Perse's Chateau Pavie since 1998 would be rewarded by an upgrade into the First Great Classified Growths (A) category, but finally such was not the case.

Among the estates promoted to the First Great Classified Growths B category are Chateau Troplong-Mondot and Pavie-Macquin, whose efforts made since the Nineties fully justify their new grade. It should be noted that no First Great Classified Growth was relegated to the lower Great Classified Growth class.

Promoted growths from the status of Great Growth ("Grand Cru") to Great Classified Growth ("Grand Cru Classe") are: Chateaux Bellefont-Belcier, Destieux, Fleur Cardinale, Grand Corbin, Grand Corbin-Despagne and Monbousquet.

The demoted growths from the status of Great Classified Growth to Great Growth are: Chateaux Bellevue, Cadet Bon, Faurie de Souchard, Guadet Saint-Julien, La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Belivier), La Tour du Pin-Figeac (Moueix), Lamarzelle, Petite Faurie de Soutard, Tertre Daugay, Villemaurine and Yon-Figeac. If the recent samples of some of the above mentioned properties may justify their current downgrade, there are great chances that estates like Bellevue, Tertre Daugay or Yon-Figeac will be upgraded to their previous rankings by the next revision in 2016 as the progresses noted after 2000, but not entering in the range of vintages (1993 - 2002) appointed for the criteria of selection for the 2006 classification, are noticable.

The two following estates have completely disappeared from the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classification: Curé-Bon-la-Madeleine (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Canon) and La Clusière (integrated meanwhile to Chateau Pavie).

Finally, no estate considered as "garagiste" has integrated the classification. Valandraud, Mondotte, Le Dome, Bellevue-Mondotte or Magrez-Fombrauge have, for the least, the potential to be ranked as Great Classified Growths. In sight of the very fine quality reached by the above mentioned estates in recent vintages as well as all the innovative wine making methods used by the "garagistes", it remains to be seen whether the authorities will dare to cross the line in 2016..?
