Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 94 pts. in 55 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by fcxj on 12/3/2021 & rated 86 points: Orange tinted color. Slightly shut aromatics. Also advanced palate. Not good showing. (1082 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/7/2020 flawed bottle: La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY): Magnum. Corked. (2569 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 6/8/2019 & rated 93 points: Consistent notes. Good bottle of Monty. Medium yellow color. Good richness and complexity. Just hints of oxidation but what you would expect from a 20 year old White Burg. Lemon, pears, orchard fruits, tangy acidity. I see no further upside in this and in fact this was just at the beginning of its slow downward trajectory but still very enjoyable. Drink now. (1866 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 5/28/2019 & rated 94 points: RSV and Richebourg Dinner + Montrachet and La Tache (Holland Park, Singapore): So lovely. This had such an archetypal Montrachet nose, with layers of sweet cream, plump white fruit, ripe melons, pinpricks of spice, and a halo of white flowers, all this with a kiss of oak still in there. Amazing. The palate was not quite as astounding as the nose, but there was still plenty of Montrachet magic to go around. Not the most detailed or defined, but this was power and intensity - with mouthfilling flavours of white fruit and flowers and mineral and cream - wed to supreme elegance, and balanced to a perfect pitch. The midpalate was pierced with a lovely bit of kumquat acidity that just pulled the wine into a tremendsouly long finish of preserved limes, mineral and spice. Superb stuff, and drinking wonderfully now. (2187 views)
Tasted by kr522 on 3/8/2019 & rated 96 points: Drank from Mag. This wine was so harmonious, It had everything in the right place working together to form a perfectly rounded experience. peaches/stone fruit character

Just as I was sinking into this, here comes the Coche flight. No big deal....wait....what....we need to use this glass for the Coche?? Ugh. We're stuck with the terrible choice of chugging or dumping. I pick the 2nd worst option and chug it down

Came back to it 3 hours later and it was still magnificent. My guess is magnum form is helping, and it won’t get better than this, so might as well drink them if you have them. Thx Alan (1885 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 3/7/2019 & rated 95 points: Zachys La Paulée BYO Dinner (Lafayette NYC): Magnum. Rich, concentrated with so much mature orchard fruit and intense spice. Long, densely flavored finish. Impressive. (1772 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/7/2019 & rated 95 points: Zachys La Paulée "Warm-up" Dinner (Lafayette - New York NY): From magnum. Lots of ripe and bright apple with peach hints. Dense and powerful, while still bright. Just as good when finished 3 hours later. (1651 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 6/21/2018: A great treat mid-tasting. Ripe apple with great volume and concentration. Great nose, far more restrained palate with great length. More time in glass and air would have brought out the intensity and complexity I've often found in the best previous bottles of this wine. (1342 views)
Tasted by Burgnick on 6/13/2018 & rated 92 points: Nose had peach, apricot, honey, custard and vanilla. The palate’s tension was outstanding with good length. A very balanced montrachet with subtle power. Drinking well but certainly can age further. 92+ (1315 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 12/6/2017 & rated 95 points: Ken’s Birthday Celebration (Morton's Steakhouse - Northbrook IL): Magnum. Popped and poured, then enjoyed over 3 hours. Ripe, rich and unctuous from the start. Peach, apricot and some baked apple with slightly sweet spice. This was wonderful to start, then kept getting better and better with more air, plus as it got closer to room temp. (2616 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Burgundy Dinner with Friends (The Blanchard - Chicago IL): Rich, dense and unctuous with lots of stone fruit and butterscotch. Certainly enjoyable, but slightly more advanced than I'd prefer at this age. (2068 views)
Tasted by Kemo Sabe on 8/26/2017 & rated 93 points: Medium to darker yellow color which was not a hint as to this bottles freshness. This was drinking really well. Nice lemon and dark yellow fruits. Good acidity and complexity. I dont see this wine getting better from here but its not in decline. Still nice vibrancy. Got better over the couple hours we drank it. (1502 views)
Tasted by dream on 12/7/2016 & rated 90 points: Sweet nose of lemony butter. Quite aged with a soft, evolved, buttery texture and lovely flavors of mint, spice, faded orchard fruits and minerals. Lower acidity at this point with a nice faded complexity on the finish and it was at it's best with the delicious poached lobster. Drink up as this bottle at least is clearly past its best. 90- (1728 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 12/6/2016 & rated 92 points: Flecks of cinnamon across the nose with light petrol and rounded lemon. Warm yellow tropical fruits, warm butter and light wood on the palate. Refreshing but low acid midpalate leads to light wood and pecan on the finish. This bottle was just starting to fade, but still rewarding. 92-93 (1549 views)
Tasted by dchain on 1/10/2016 & rated 93 points: Surprisingly gold and advanced looking that it had me slightly worried. On the nose it is a spicy, honeyed and floral cocktail laced with white nectarine and honeysuckle. It is very clean and pure on the palate with a nice long finish. Surprised how ripe it tasted and if there was a slight flaw I would say there was not quite enough acidity. Still, really impressive drinking and don't wait too long to drink these. Great wine but at nearly $400/bt it is hard to justify the price tag. Thank you to B for providing the white and red WOTNs! (2388 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/24/2015 & rated 93 points: La Paulée Meets Chicago - Dinner (Blackbird - Chicago IL): From magnum. Orchard fruit cross-section with lots of spice. Elegant mineral textures stand out at finish. (3449 views)
Tasted by Erolso1 on 6/19/2015: Poured at Le Papillion in San Jose with a varied tasting menu. Deep golden amber color in the glass serves notice that this wine will not be standard fare. Nose is heady with cognac, mulled spice and honeysuckle. Very little fruit or acidity I've come to expect from grand cru white burgundy, more like a spirit than a wine. The first taste shows crispness and some echo of acidity, but the cognac-calvados feel remains through the front and mid-palate. Mouthfeel is full and fat, like a 15th century cherub by Botticelli. Finish is long but remarkably thin, as this wine is perhaps struggling under the weight of its age. Very interesting, but dare I say disappointing for its lack of true complexity, minerality and classic bright fruit. Getting old is a bitch. (2655 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 3/1/2015: Alt-Paulée at Bouley: Always exciting to drink Montrachet. And yet, this was not a moving bottle. Maybe the wine just isn't ready, or maybe the fat of the vintage obscures the other components of the wine. It had the roundness and volume that can be so compelling, but it was without the complexity of aroma and flavor that make this wine so special. (4394 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 3/1/2015 & rated 92 points: Elegant and rich. Smokey notes. Full and long in the mouth. Missing a certain thrill but excellent showing of this classic wine. (2153 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 11/22/2014 & rated 92 points: Tenth Annual White Truffle Dinner (Chez Weber - Chicago IL): More mature than other bottles I've had in recent years, still showing lots of lush apple and pear. Good concentration and length. (2519 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/30/2014 & rated 93 points: Probably slightly on the other side of maturity. Deep gold in color, with a beautiful butterscotch, green apple and citrus nose, the wine is soft, elegant and fleshy, but not exciting. (2067 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/15/2014 & rated 94 points: La Paulée de San Francisco - Gala Dinner (The Fairmont - San Francisco CA): Tasting, brief note. Apple, lemon, lots of energy and minerality. Incredibly elegant. quite fresh. (2939 views)
Tasted by BradE on 2/14/2014: I always enjoy Drouhin's Montrachet, but for some reason in our tastings they frequently get flighted with Leflaive, and its usually not a fair fight. Tonight was not exception, which is a shame, since the wine is very good. (1754 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 3/7/2013 & rated 94 points: First La Paulee Warmup Dinner (Ai Fiori - New York NY): Bottles haven't been consistent over the past few years, but this was certainly one of the good bottles. Lush and sweet stone fruit aromas, Lots of power and rounded fruit flavors on palate. Slightly more mature than a great magnum I opened last summer, but this almost as good and kept picking up intensity with more time in glass. (2808 views)
Tasted by BurgTongue on 12/14/2012 & rated 95 points: Light straw color. Regal nose of chalk, wet stone, mineral, an baked green apple. Taste is long and lean...beautiful follow-up to the open knit nose. Solid acid spine that carries the green apple flavors for 30+ seconds. (2635 views)

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
