Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 20 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by _Alex_ on 3/16/2023 & rated 91 points: Lys gulgrønn. Duft av modne sitroner og sitronterte. Mineralsk, fokusert og ren, moden Riesling. Tørr, knust stein og lys honning. Virker å ha mistet noe syrlighet, men fortsatt frisk og deilig kompleks. (502 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 1/17/2022: Decanted at maybe 4pm and back into the bottle soon after, as the aromas seemed ready - decanted again right before serving at 7:30. Lovely on the nose with fresh and pure scents of apricots, geranium, and mineral, but on the palate the wine seems like its best days have passed, in that the acidity is not as punchy as it was several years ago and the wine seems less energetic. I saved half the bottle, skipped day two, and on day 3 it was much better, more complete and harmonious and with better acidity and balance. This needs a lot of air - more than I gave it, to show best on the day its being served. (1493 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 11/3/2017: Fantastic showing. Beautifully aromatic, with stone, honey, citrus pith, herbs, and other things that I cannot name. So focused and controlled, such clarity and intensity. The palate is balanced and graceful. There were a lot of very illustrious wines on the table and everyone came back to this one, amidst all that. (3452 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 3/23/2017: Shockingly thin and lacking in depth of flavor. I hope it was going through an awkward stage, as it was a real disappointment. (3053 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 3/22/2017: TT(W)TG (brief notes, blind wines) (Enfield): Light tropical fruit nose. Palate of lime, stone, and herbs; quite understated though. Waiting to emerge, I suspect. Nice. (3031 views)
Tasted by ProfByron on 3/4/2016 & rated 93 points: Superb concentration of Riesling flavour, great balancing acidity, and the perfect degree of balancing residual sugar.

Has the concentration of prestige Champagne. (3344 views)
Tasted by juffer on 1/11/2014 & rated 95 points: I served this in my wine course. Herbal and floral nose followed by a dramatic spearmint mid palate and a long finish. Interesting side by side comparison with a Donnhoff GG has Donnhoff as the more elegant light and airy and Nikolaihof as the more dramatic fireworks. As much as I want to side with the elegant, I have to confess that Nikolaihof wins out for the magnitude of the pure enjoyment. (4785 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 11/22/2013: Through the Heart of France; 11/17/2013-11/25/2013 (Centre, Aubrac, Languedoc and Paris): Medium yellow. Expansive nose of peach. Tremendous density and equally tremendous acidity. Kaleidoscopic flavors of stone fruit, citrus and crystallized ginger. Great length and incredible dynamism and evolution in the glass over 2 hours. Profound wine and barely in second gear, it would seem. Yes, indeed, this was the one and only non-French wine we drank on this trip, and well worth the brief detour! (3653 views)
Tasted by kstoddard on 9/6/2013 & rated 93 points: G6 (Kevin): Bright yellow color. Strong petrol nose. Tastes of apple, melon, lime, and orange zest. Medium to full-bodied. Rich finish with great complexity. (4007 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 7/2/2013: Pungent sulfury nose at first but it blew off very quickly and then was all about the purity of the fruit - spring-like, perfumed, creamy in texture, and seemingly sweet - in fact, it didn't even taste like a dry wine to me but almost something knocking on the door of feinherb. That can't be right, though, can it? (Alcohol is labeled at 12.5%.) (9457 views)
Tasted by salil on 1/12/2013 & rated 94 points: So serene, delicate and understated; this is a wine that really needs time and air to show its best. It's utterly compelling though with an amazing purity to the fresh fruit flavours, greener herbal and leafy accents and a base of pure stone beneath the fruit. (3467 views)
Tasted by M DU VIN on 1/29/2012 & rated 94 points: Superb wine. Popped and pured -- and it just grew and grew as it was exposed to the air. First tasted this wine with Christine Saahs, and she insists that it is best if this wine is opened days or even weeks before it is to be served. Hard to believe, but the sommelier in charge at Spring wine bar in Paris insists the same. (2921 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/23/2012 & rated 93 points: Spring 2012 Terry Theise/WineWise/The Vienna Wine Co Tasting Part II: Austria (The General's Residence, Fort Mason, San Francisco, California): Light yellow color; intriguing, mineral, tart peach nose; tasty, tart peach, mineral, tart citrus palate; long finish (2315 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 6/30/2011: Roundly fruited. There is a note of spice but is somewhat flat overall. (2103 views)
Tasted by salil on 6/21/2011 & rated 93 points: Theise/Skurnik DI tasting. More herbal and stony than the Vom Stein, and with more layers, depth and richness. Outstanding. (2027 views)

Terry Theise Estate Selections, 2011 Austrian Catalog (5/1/2011)
(Nikolaihof Riesling Steiner Hund "Reserve") ($81.00) Of course this is a first offering. 5 weeks in bottle when I was there, so the muted aromas weren’t surprising. But the palate was suddenly stunning, rather like the great ’05, a cool creamy fruit over a molten core of mineral. You taste the gleam of the mica. The wine gets more forceful with air. An entire Royal Court of Riesling nuance, highlighted by wintergreen and glittering tiny stones. It penetrates every scilla of the soft palate, and it makes you want to leave the table, glass in hand, find some sweet Spring woods, and go walking.

Nikolaihof

Producer website

Please note that while most wines of this Wachau producer are from that region, there is one property (Steiner Hund) that is actually in the Kremstal, and so is ineligible for the nomenclature used on Wachau wines. The Steiner Hund wine (one of Nikolaihof's top wines) has been variously described over the years as a Trockener Riesling Spätlese or a Riesling Trocken Reserve. The region 'Wachau' on Steiner Hund wines are incorrect--it should be 'Kremstal', but I'm having trouble changing it. Anyone help with this?

The wines are now produced biodynamically.

This former monastery in Mautern is now owned by the Saah family, who also serve their exquisite biodynamic fare in an onsite restaurant, an ideal place for a visit while in the valley spending a warm evening out under the ancient Imperial Linden tree in the courtyard, tasting wine, eating, and being regaled with Christine Saah's wonderful hospitality, close to heaven on earth for such as we. Highly recommended and a superb producer. jht

Lower Austria isn't "southern" Austria, but rather northeastern. It derives its name from its downriver location on the Danube River, which flows from west to east.
