| Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 19 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Doc90 on 6/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Fragrant nose with amaretto, moss, and sandalwood. Rich amaretto palate with earthy nuances that builds into a long finish with harmonizing tannins, acidity, and Italian saddle leather. Very impressive. Paired well with pizza. Ready to drink, but certainly no rush either. (1888 views) | | Tasted by hdn on 12/31/2015 & rated 93 points: Zeer lekkere nebbiolo, geparfumeerd, volume, rond. Zelfs nog te genieten na een hele menu op oudejaar. (2553 views) | | Tasted by ciaovito on 10/25/2014 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured out of the cellar. Was expecting a highly alcoholic fruit bomb was happily surprised. I know that the winery is in the process of purging the barrique for the most part, and this vintage showed a delicate oak compliment throughout the drinking. It did support it with very pretty aromatics of tar, cherries, boysenberry delicate acidity and a generous amount of fruit on the palate. Clearly in the drinking window. I've got 2004's in the cellar and won't touch them for 5 years. (3603 views) | | Tasted by hdn on 10/31/2013 & rated 93 points: Direct uit de kelder gedronken. (4252 views) | | Tasted by hdn on 7/4/2013 & rated 92 points: Zeer mooie barbaresco. Baksteenrood, met evolutie. Mooi volle smaak, vrij lange afdronk, perfect op dronk. (4681 views) | | Tasted by PANYC on 6/22/2013 & rated 93 points: A beautiful med to full bodied elegant wine with loads of dark fruit with some lead and leather notes. Very seamless with a long finish drinking extremely well right now. (1119 views) | | Tasted by Vinomarcus on 2/1/2012 & rated 91 points: Wednesday Night Blind - February 2012 (Don Tommaso's, Yorktown Heights, NY): I double decanted this wine more than 24hrs prior to the dinner - This was pretty well received by the group and everyone enjoyed this, it was still tight and tannic but had great notes of currants, grilled meat, licorice, pepper and liquid smoke. I loved this wine with the fennel salad, truly a great match as the acidity of the salad cut the tannins up nicely. Nobody could believe this was still a tight wine after being open for 24hrs. It actually shut down by the end of the night. Posner things it may never truly open up, I may agree with him, but I still enjoyed it and A. Rocca is one of my favorite Barbaresco producers. (4764 views) | | Tasted by RobertDwyer on 6/3/2011 & rated 94 points: A massive wine of surprising depth for the region. As soon as I opened it, the room was filled with aromas of rustic fruit. On the nose I get signature Nebbiolo minerality, deep rich red fruit and menthol. The mouth feel is rich and supple. The finish goes on for minutes. An outstanding wine from a fantastic Barbaresco producer. (4687 views) | | Tasted by Prinsen on 4/30/2011 & rated 89 points: This is a very good and intense wine, but it will defenately win by another 5-8 years in the cellar. (3273 views) | | Tasted by ivar on 4/8/2011 & rated 92 points: My kind of wine! Nice tannins, plenty of sweet and tart fruit, soft oak, forest floor - delicious! (3319 views) | | Tasted by Wink on 4/25/2010 & rated 89 points: Dark garnet with brick tint. Translucent. At first the nose is reticent with faint flowers, dust, black cherry and vanilla. Ripe medium palate skewing toward the dark fruit side with blackberry, plum, fig, and oak (Where is the cherry? A little shows up after some time in the glass). Pleasant acidity. Good length. Tannins still quite grippy. Very good. Not great. Addendum: on day 2 the nose and palate are more open and ripe. Still skewing a bit toward dark fruit for nebbiolo, but more cherry today. Tannins are softer. I would score it 90-91 based on second day only. (2812 views) | | Tasted by steffenpelz on 10/18/2009: October 2009 Wine Salon (Chez Brian): Most tannic of trio, mushrooms, rose petals, plum, baking soda, dark, almost Barolo-like in style (3682 views) | | Tasted by rarewineman on 4/25/2009 & rated 92 points: Deep garnet red in color, an intense nose packed with fruity aromas of cherry and blackberry, layered with notes of vanilla, toasted nuts, and sweet spices. Rich, soft, and quite fresh on the palate.... fine tannins and good length. (3282 views) |

| Albino Rocca Producer websiteNebbioloNebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.
Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.
"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.
Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
