Tasted by Wine Canuck on 7/1/2023 & rated 95 points: An Epic Summer Wine Weekend - Year 2; 6/30/2023-7/2/2023 (Muskoka, Ontario, Canada): [Tasted Single Blind] From a pristine bottle with a high fill. This pours light garnet in the glass. The nose is absolutely fabulous and is the real highlight here showing more in the quintessential Northern Rhone paradigm. Aromas are of green olives, brine, blueberry, animal fur, crushed slate, and whisps of white and black pepper. Relative to the nose, the palate is a tad challenging. At first entering on lovely dried blueberry, it then turns to medium plus tannin, and medium acid, giving this a structured, lightly astringent mouthfeel and also clipping the finish a tad. I correctly figured this must be the Guigal. It well exceed my expectations and really showed how a perfect bottle can transcend other experiecnes with the same wine. Some tasters thought this had an 80s La Chapelle profile which is a testament to how well this showed and how true it is to the application. (951 views)
Tasted by mowtod on 11/25/2022 flawed bottle: Too old and thin (740 views)
Tasted by glou.sf on 5/10/2021 & rated 91 points: Tasted blind. Pretty nose of chocolate, red fruit, and a hint of mushroom.s Nice acidity with sweet fruit, tart berries, some forest notes, and well integrated tannins. Medium finish. While quite good, this was a bit non-distinct and hard to place. The 1990 Hermitage we tasted a few months ago was clearly the better wine. (1931 views)
Tasted by mye on 1/21/2018: Birth Year - Themed wine dinner: Complete wild card.. everyone can pick this out.
decanted 1 hour, followed through the night..
Individually it's tasty.. solid well made wine, with inviting earthiness. A hint of plum and red fruit. just so easy to drink.
A little out of place and overshadowed.. so half a bottle left untouched.

Day 2: wow. amazing.. completely held up, and just soft and easy to drink with all the complexity of a top tier bottle. Would also drink this all day. (3600 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 6/27/2015 flawed bottle: 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (Our house): Corked (5329 views)
Tasted by DarinC on 9/19/2014 flawed bottle: HS fill. Red meat juices and prunes. Questionable provenance. (5210 views)
Tasted by AV2012 on 9/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Superb cork, good bottle. Quite young colour, violet with dark, not so brickish tones. Composed, initially tight nose of tart cherries, acid and that the wine will be dry is evident already on the nose. No brett, no VA, but there was earth, mild freshly grinned pepper, beefy. Med/Full bodied, even rather full given its age. Backbone of acid and integrated tannins, well composed, holds together. Some rusticity to this wine, finish was bitter. Very good. (4995 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 7/13/2014 & rated 92 points: Getting Wine Geeky for the World Cup Final (Domaine Wine Storage, Chicago IL): Nose: This took an hour or so to get going, but when it opened up, it was gorgeous and flowing with leather, black pepper, black cherries, spice tones, tobacco, and some black fruits. There was excellent depth with a real layering to the tones.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with medium acidity. The feel is layered and elegant with black pepper, leather, black cherries, tobacco, and some black fruits. There are still some supporting tannins that provide a nice backbone.

Overall: This needed about an hour to 90 minutes to finally rev up. It's been 5 years since the last bottle and this one was more like my first bottle(which was really good) thankfully. (4292 views)
Tasted by tooch on 7/13/2014 & rated 92 points: World Cup Final (Domaine Wine Storage - Chicago, IL): You gotta love these older Guigal wines. This one seemed timeliness, almost like you're looking through a time portal as you raise the glass to your lips. There was a lot of tobacco, dark fruits, earth, and ash. Unapologetically rustic, this is what I miss the most with modern day Hermitage. Beautiful old bones. (5432 views)
Tasted by j45 on 4/5/2014: Still has plenty of sweet fruit accented by leather, pepper and meaty notes. Time to drink up. (2349 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 3/19/2014 & rated 91 points: Guigal Hermitage Vertical (Palo Alto): Funky, slight Brett, youthful, lots of fruit but good complexity too; full bodied, great acidity, but falls a bit flat on the palate. 91. My #3, Group's #8. Most of the people in the group thought it was corked, but it didn't strike me. Lots of brett, yes, but not corked. (2374 views)
Tasted by europat55 on 3/19/2014 flawed bottle: 1978-2003 Guigal Hermitages (Tom's house in Palo Alto, California): Corked... bummer!
My #8, Group's #8 (156 pts). Tasted blind. (2337 views)
Tasted by pekingunther on 1/13/2014 & rated 91 points: How amazing wine can be. A very good winemaker, an avaerage vintage, and at 28 yrs it comes out of the bottle punching well above its weight. Fresh with some reallly good fruit. Plenty to suggest that it could have gone another 8-10 years, but not necessarily getting better. Although a touch of bricking, still essentially a garnet hue and tasting really really fresh. The wine lifts the palette. In terms of fruit, plenty of red berries, I'd say sour cherry and bilberry. It has some green notes but nothing that takes away from the wine. Maybe a hint of tobacco in there as well. A really pleasant surprise. (1986 views)
Tasted by ucbeau on 3/1/2013: The bouquet was all meaty, black fruited, earthy aromas. Plenty of depth and concentration too, but not at all heavy-handed. I loved how much acidity and tannin were still present, offering a nice foil to the ripeness. Wish I had many more bottles because I think this is drinking great now but may even get better in five years. (2630 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 4/24/2011 & rated 90 points: Two bottles from the same source, tasted with consistent notes. These examples were well into the tertiary phase of evolution; earth/leather/tea flavors are predominant on the palate, but there is still some nice, mellow red cherry fruit in the background. Layered and well-textured, with fully resolved tannins; good length. Past peak, but still enjoyable. Easter dinner of rotisserie leg of lamb with extended family -- a great pairing. (4095 views)
Tasted by jspeacock1978 on 5/20/2010 & rated 89 points: Popped and poured for my little brother's last dinner as a single man. Huge tobacco and some leather on the nose; palate consisted mainly of dark cherries and tart fruit. Surprisingly this wine didn't fall off before we' finished dinner. It's a good wine but probably past it's prime; finish your supply because it won't last much longer. (3867 views)
Tasted by Fielding on 2/9/2010 & rated 93 points: Still in great shape. (4071 views)
Tasted by LeatherPalate on 8/5/2009 & rated 89 points: Aged Rhones with the bad boys (Bistro Champagne Lincoln Square Chitown): Pop and pour- the initial nose showed some nice promise with lard, smoke, dark cherries, and a bit of mushroom beef broth.
Palate proved to be a bit thin. some dark fruit, meat flavors, and smoke but very thin.
This showed us a little leg and then feel apart pretty quickly. Not over the hill probably just a bad bottle. (4359 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 8/1/2009 & rated 89 points: Northern Rhones 90 and Older (Bistro Campagne, chicago IL): nose: real lovely nose initially with tones of bacon fat, black cherries, celery sticks, bits of black spices and some dark florals, but then seems to flatten out and the exression and layering disappears and becomes a bit more simple

taste: a bit hollow on the mid palate with a really good medium feel that is rather suave with good tones of black cherries, bacon fat and tones of black spices. Refined tannins, but this doesn't really have the drive that a previous bottle had and fell off a bit

overall: had a great fill level and seemed to be a great bottle at first, but fell off a bit soon after being open. Wasn't over the hill, just a bottle that was lacking and didn't hit that next level that had previously been done (3864 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 12/10/2008 & rated 93 points: Jonathan Dinh cooks dinner (Chez JD, Milpitas, California): Bricking medium red violet color with pale meniscus; mature, beef jus and mushroom nose; mature, tart black fruit, beef jus, iron, espresso and charcoal palate; medium finish (2625 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 7/27/2008 & rated 93 points: an easy sunday afternoon in the great white north (gurnee IL, jordan's house): nose: great aged nose of barnyard, chalk, celery sticks, dark floral tones, blackberries, dark cherry, and bits of soil

taste: Excellent and silky feel with a pronounced red fruit core accompanied by celery sticks, floral tones, and blackberry notes

overall: in a great place right now and is a perfect example of an aged hermitage. Very silky but also full with a great red fruit attack and smooth transitions that give way to a floral finish (3704 views)
Tasted by jordanj on 7/27/2008 & rated 94 points: Mish Mash of wines (My house): Peperry nose (both black and white ground) a touch of bell peppers and shrooms bacon and cheese. Very focused and very smooth on the mid- palate but very peppery. I also noted a great color to it with little signs of falling apart. (3812 views)
Tasted by GrandeSerataFuori on 7/17/2008 & rated 90 points: Around peak, for my taste. Potting soil, fresh tobacco and leather with a touch of red fruit. Slight tartness. (3152 views)
Tasted by blue on 3/25/2007: New York Dinner with spanish winemakers: At peak, very good. (4135 views)
Tasted by DianeR on 2/21/2007 & rated 95 points: Red color, tending toward brick / orange. On the nose, mineral, leather, and an earthy note - a very seductive nose. The mouthfeel is smooth and well balanced. I wouldn't wait on these any longer - they are definitely at peak, or slightly past - but wow, this was an AWESOME wine. (3743 views)

A FAMILY HISTORY
Land with 24 centuries of history behind it, worked and preserved by three generations of winemakers with family values at their core and a commitment to an illustrious terrain that produces prestigious wines. This, in a nutshell, is the Maison Guigal. Right from the beginning the motto, “No Pains No Gains” underpins the promise made to Etienne Guigal. A commitment to work together to follow in his footsteps, to communicate the family’s passion and create so many emotions. Today, Marcel and Philippe, along with their wives, are the guardians of this exceptional domain which combines history, devotion and a sense of togetherness. A breath of inspiration for generations to come.

CÔTE-RÔTIE
1
Planted on slopes by the Romans 24 centuries ago, this illustrious vineyard is made up of the Côte Brune, upstream of the Reynard and the Côte Blonde which is downstream. Planted almost exclusively with Syrah, the Côte Brune produces a powerful, intense wine. Thanks to a dash of Viognier which compliments the Syrah, the Côte Blonde is more subtle. There is a charming legend attached to this appellation and the Château d’Ampuis: “the sire of this place had two daughters, one with hair as dark as the night and the other blonde like a field of wheat. When they got married he endowed each with two of his best slopes. This is how we inherited the Côte Brune and the Côte Blonde”

CONDRIEU
2
With its steep terraces which plunge towards the Rhône, this vineyard is planted solely with Viognier. A rare grape varietal imported by the Greeks at the beginning of our era, combined with granite soils its naturally complex character produces a unique white wine with a yellow golden hue and intense and subtle notes of delicate apricot and white peach.

SAINT-JOSEPH
3
Enjoyed at the table of kings, this illustrious wine’s name hails back to the 16th Century and the Jesuit monks of Tournon. The reds are made from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. These grape varieties grown on a South to South East facing steeply sloped vineyard with granite soils produce elegant, luscious wines.

HERMITAGE
4
A prestigious appellation since ancient times, it is named after a 13th Century hermit who sought redemption by devoting himself to prayer and the cultivation of vines. Enjoyed by the Russian Court and the great and the good of Europe, this rich and powerful wine with intense aromas is produced from Syrah for the reds and Marsanne and Roussanne for the whites.

CROZES-HERMITAGE
5
A typical wine of the northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage benefits from warm pebbly soils with good drainage. This is a vast appellation partially planted on slopes. The reds are produced from Syrah and the whites from Marsanne and Rousanne. The red wine is deep ruby in colour, full of savoury flavour and well-balanced. The white wines are dry and aromatic with floral notes.

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE
6
These soils are composed of calcareous round pebbles and the vineyards are swept by the Mistral winds and warmed by the Provencal sunshine, resulting in wines with unmistakable flavours of the South. These southern wines are produced from a complex blend of the 13 grape varieties of the appellation with Grenache as the main component. They are complex with soft and powerful tannins and are characterised by a generous and strong personality.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

• The appellation stretches over 3 communes in the Drôme "département" : Tain-l'Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage and Larnage.

• The soils are a combination of granite with alluvial quaternary delta deposits, and, on the eastern side, Pliocene clay. This diversity explains the numerous different names given to vineyard plots within the appellation : Bessards, Greffieux, Méal, Roucoule, Beaumes, etc.

• The meso-climate provides shelter from the north winds, where the majority of the slopes is well exposed, facing south.

•The vineyards area adds up to 134 hectares/331 acres, with an annual production of 3,635 hectoliters. Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2.3 US tons/acres).

• Grape varieties : Syrah (an addition of up to 15% of Marsanne or Roussanne is allowed).
