Tasted by essenceofreal on 4/12/2024: Wah, was decent but far from previous bottles of this vintage.

This bottle was very advanced. Very. Almost as if it was exposed to heat at some point. Not sure how long I've had this but I somehow recall I bought this online a year or so ago, Big mistake!!!!!!! Previous bottles of this vintage from my cellar were clearly a world apart from this bottle. They were beautiful, lush, full bodied, super elegant.

This had an over arching burnt flavor of tobacco, cedar, torched leather, bramble, alcoholic cassis with a dash super black licorice, black berries and heat. Kinda disjointed based on the burnt echo in all the flavor, not the 96 Dominus I know.

What a shame. Note to self, yet again screwed by wine merchants claiming to have older wines stored under in temperature control since they were purchased. What a bunch of BS!! Luckily I have enough wine and won't have to deal w this ever again. Scammers. (711 views)
Tasted by ovenmitt on 7/3/2023 & rated 95 points: Dark fruit, currant, blueberries and dark cherries. Graphite, black tea and mineral. Long finish. Could use just a tad more acid, a little round with very soft powdery tannins. Really excellent bottle. This is in a very good place right now but would seem to have many years still in the tank.  Tasted by Wasque35 on 5/21/2023: Delicious. Poker group enjoyed it, (2012 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 5/14/2023 & rated 95 points: Four hour slo ox, one hour full decant. Deep dark color without any signs of aging. Nose of dark fruit, oak and smoke, sweet fine resolved soft tannins, full bodied, balanced, powerful yet refined. This is the real deal and at its apogee. (1942 views)
Tasted by dream on 4/24/2023 & rated 95 points: This showed brilliantly and very Bordeaux-like with black fruits and a wonderful layered mouthfeel. The finish is so smooth and complex with notes of sweet graphite and fresh minerals. I'd love to throw this wine into a blind 1996 Bordeaux tasting as it's a dead ringer for the '96 Pichon Lalande. Dinner at Dominus. (2219 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 4/19/2023 & rated 91 points: Cold rainy Nite in MSP but all was good at St Genevieve tonight! This was tasty enough for my liking but not as stellar as Dominus can be. Didn't sense any major flaws but my palate was fading with this pour last wine of the night and the burger paired with it was packed with flavor. (2102 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 4/19/2023: Heidi's Gang: The White Burgs Reign (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN): Very dark red color. PNP, followed a glass over 90 minutes. Reticent nose, dried earth, charred, mulled fruit, caramelized sugar, heat. The palate shows baked dark fruit, lots of alcohol coming through, brown sugar. I may be alone, but this is not right. Probable heat damage. No score. (1389 views)
Tasted by ONEFIVE on 4/9/2023: Subtle notes of red fruit, currant, baking spice, and a bit of eucalyptus on the nose. Very pure and focused.
On the palate, this is fantastic, ripe red fruit burst through with medium body, med- acidity, and med+ tannin.
This is great now and still has plenty of time. (787 views)
Tasted by G SQUARED on 1/21/2023 & rated 99 points: Very rare I give a wine 100 or close to it. Incredible depth, still two or more decades of life but in a place of maturity that's impossible to resist. Coffee, dark chocolate, spice, just incredible. Ordered 6 more. (1265 views)
Tasted by stschutz on 6/25/2022 & rated 96 points: Incredible balance and wonderful fruit still after 26 years. Fine, resolved tannins with a nice finish. Many years left in this elegant wine.

Le Bar a Boeuf. Over fois grois and filet mignon. (2170 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 4/4/2022 flawed bottle: Overwelmed by brett (2136 views)
Tasted by Loathesome on 3/6/2022 & rated 95 points: Mid Red. Glorious fruit, weight, concentration and balance from start to finish. Tried in 2010 and clearly needed more time and this was it at its best 12 years later. Should still hold for another 5-7 years. Deep fruit but not over extracted or over fruit driven. (2003 views)
Tasted by Ltrain1282 on 11/13/2021 & rated 93 points: Beautiful wine … like a youngish pomerol. Blueberry pie. Tad on the sweet side. Probably would have scored higher if not for drinking next to ‘96 Margaux. Still dark ink color. No bricking. Shows young (2686 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 10/3/2021 & rated 94 points: Fully mature, elegant, soft, and refined, the fruits are soft, silky, and polished, leaving you with ample red fruits, freshness, and earthy nuances in the finish. This is a wine of refinement, not power. No decanting warranted, just pull that cork and enjoy. (3810 views)
Tasted by tomandlu on 9/5/2021 & rated 95 points: Decanted roughly one hour and consumed of the following 2 hour. The color was a virtually opaque garnet red. The nose was very pleasant and complex when first sampled one hour after decanted but it really soared about 30 minutes later and didn't slow down until the last drop was sniffed, offering an intense panoply of spices (allspice and clove in particular), cedar, tobacco, ripe red fruit and some camphor. On the palate the wine was graceful and complete, with hints of more spice and a hint of oak and fine tannins. The abundant ripe fruit was held in balance with good acidity. The finish lasted at least 45 seconds. What a stunning wine! Purchased on release and stored in my cellar since. (1912 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 8/15/2021 & rated 93 points: One of 6 left now. My experience with the 5 bottles that have been consumed in recent years has been very up and down, as I see is the case with the reviews posted on cellartracker.com. None of the bottles has been bad.....just not up to what they should be. This bottle exhibited a real uptick from the last two I drank. Hopefully that will hold up for the last bottle. Was decanted for about two and a half hours. (1816 views)
Tasted by Hawkeye_Addict on 7/24/2021 & rated 95 points: Beautiful. Bacon fat on the nose and palate. Surprisingly strong tannins still. Fruit still there but a nice mix of that and the tertiary notes coming through. Dried fruit and candy on the backend. Lots of years ahead on this, but drinking about where I like them…still fruit, bust starting to subside, with integrated tannins. (1829 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 6/1/2021 & rated 92 points: My last two bottles of this one were off from prior experience. While this one was not as good as earlier bottles, bit was better that the two which were a disappointment. (1644 views)
Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 5/28/2021 & rated 94 points: On the nose, the black fruits were explosive at first.
Over aeration, violet takes over, with tobacco and a touch of cedar.

The palate begins with a silky and textured touch, and a very beautiful texture. Liquorice aromas, with a touch of vanilla and then a lot of spices come to line the palate in layers. It's complex and structured with a very nice balance. The tannins melted completely during aeration, offering a fresh and intense minty finish followed by a nice length.

It's excellent. (1745 views)
Tasted by Ballballsheep on 2/15/2021 & rated 91 points: Very fruity at the beginning, more different aroma and tastes come out after 45 mins. Pairing very well with the confit of duck leg. Complex and smooth. Right at its peak. Save one-third for next day, it becomes more balance and provides me more imaginations. Both days give me nice experiences, and I like the taste from the second day more. Such an energetic wine! (2656 views)
Tasted by Zitan on 2/5/2021 & rated 95 points: Bought a 6-pack near release and hadn’t checked it in 7 years. If you told me blind it was Lynch-Bages I’d believe you. Fragrant nose of violets. Orange just starting to show around the edges. Fruit intact but mellow. Just enough tannin left. Secondary earthy and mushroom flavors emerging. Teriffic purity and length. A treat! (2003 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 2/2/2021 & rated 90 points: My few bottles have clearly gone bad relative to what they should be. The wine was not bad, but no where near what it should be. A bottle from last June was up to what it should be. Another in October was not. This was like the October bottle. While I have had this one down to drink up, I have never had a CS roll over this fast. These bottles have been well stored. There was no problem with the cork.....it was in perfect condition. My experience is a mystery to me. (2046 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 11/22/2020 & rated 94 points: Slow ox for one hour and decanted for 30 minutes. It took another 30 minutes for this to be in full glory. This wine was much better than the last bottle of this I had. Slightly reticent but attractive nose of black cherry, tobacco and herbs. The palate is in a perfect place on the other hand. Black currant, cherry lead pencil, licorice and forest floor finishing long and complex. This is perfectly mature right now but will continue to drink well for at least ten years. (2296 views)
Tasted by WineGuyFL on 10/4/2020 & rated 90 points: Very confused here. Had a bottle of this one a few months ago, and it was terrific. This bottle was way off from the prior experience. Cork was fine. Decanted for one and a half hours. (2338 views)
Tasted by mclanew on 9/25/2020 & rated 89 points: Slow oxed for thirty minutes. Nose has quite a bit of barnyard in it which only partially blows off. Likewise the palate which does show some good flavors of black cherry, black currant, tobacco, and cedar is marred by some brett. Structurally the wine has held up fine. Maybe this is just a bad bottle or maybe I didn’t decant it long enough but overall disappointing. (1694 views)

Dominus Estate Napanook Vineyard

Dominus makes two wines. The Estate has been made from 1983 to present. Historically a lot of the fruit has been sourced from the Napanook Vineyard. From 1991-1996 the Dominus Estate also prominently carried a single vineyard declaration in red diagonal letters on the front label, Napanook Vineyard.

In 1996 Dominus added the Napanook Red. Due to the great confusion with their Napanook Vineyard labeled Estate that same year they dropped Napanook Vineyard from the front label of the Estate in 1997.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Estate

In the United States, "Wines with “estate bottled” designations must: a) also designate an appellation of origin or an AVA, and both the vineyards and the winery must be located there; b) the grapes must come from vineyards owned or controlled by the winery; and c) the wine must have been produced, from crush to bottle, in a continuous process without leaving the winery’s premises."

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
