Community Tasting Notes (average 89.6 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 64 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mariow on 2/10/2024 & rated 90 points: perfect bottle, very high shoulder; bright red; subdued nose; initially greenish, later good fruit; drinks well (658 views)
Tasted by Sean Tay on 10/24/2023 & rated 93 points: Mini vertical taste flight of 1982,1983,1984 and 1988.

I have tasted 1982 sixth time including this, with similar notes earth, toast, black fruits, spice, charr wood, violet. Medium+ acidity and medium+ tannin. Tannin is integrated and velvety. Long years ahead. Did not decant but thru experience, decanting > 1 hour will certainly improve the nose.

1983 surprise me and friends, my third time tasting including this. It have a more pronounced nose than 1982, and drinking at its peak now. 1983 underrated due to the outstanding 1982. The notes are similar with 1982 earth, toast, black fruits, spice, charr wood, violet but have a shorter length and 1983 less ’explosive’

1984 is my first time tasting it. It’s still holding up well but pale in comparison when compare to 1982 and 1983. It’s at its tail end of drinking cycle with similar notes of 1982, 1983. Differences been medium acidity, medium tannin and medium finish. Overall still a very well make wine

1988 was my second time drinking. Ageing beautifully the way it should be. At its peak of drinking window with notes of truffle, earth, spices, toast. Medium+ acidity and medium tannin. Still have many years ahead. (1183 views)
Tasted by Dr. Bee on 7/4/2023 & rated 89 points: Pretty much past time but agree with other notes on the NOSE! Wow! Still special to open a 40 year old bottle (1459 views)
Tasted by mariow on 12/26/2022 & rated 89 points: bottom neck; vivid red; still fresh, well integrated, smooth on the palate; drinks well; opened 4 hours before consumption, no decant (2057 views)
Tasted by NewFrenchClaret on 8/19/2022 & rated 89 points: Potent nose. Spicy like a good Mouton should be. Some herbal notes, but doesn't feel underripe. Bit of mushroom and white chocolate. Varnish. Very layered.

Surprisingly thick texture, sweet on entry, quite a bit of acid. Tannins appropriate for the age but overall structure is a bit fragile. Finish is of decent length, but watery and not especially satisfying.

God it smells good though. (2434 views)
Tasted by Peech on 2/2/2022 & rated 87 points: served right after decanting. First pour showing smoke, leather, and grilled meats. Pretty light on the palate. Improved a little with aeration in terms of body. (2570 views)
Tasted by MGosset on 12/26/2021 & rated 82 points: A very good preserved bottle, label was a bit damaged. I was a wine beyond huis peak, but with every sent of a PGG. Very enjoyable wine for the christmass diner. But only if you can apreciate and understand mature wine (2233 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 12/15/2021 & rated 70 points: Not surprised, odd nose. Flat fruit. Way past prime. (2064 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 12/15/2021 & rated 85 points: Purchased on release and stored perfectly. It’s worthless now. Sell what you have. It’s just 15 years past prime (1665 views)
Tasted by ANWW89 on 10/31/2021 & rated 91 points: low neck. good storage. drinks well. mature nose. on the palate fruit is still retained fairly well. a little thin and lacks depth. should stay this way for a few more years but won't get better from here (1425 views)
Tasted by ANWW89 on 6/21/2020 & rated 90 points: mature bordeaux. tough vintage so expectations wasn't high. nose was aromatic with earth, smoke, coffee. silky on the palate. straight laced and simple- some dark fruit fading followed by tobacco, more black tea and bayleaf with more evolution. saline on the finish. quite balanced in a mature kind of way. on a slow decline but still enjoyable to those who like the mature style (2934 views)
Tasted by Markus IWC on 5/21/2020 & rated 93 points: 6.

S2: pondus, kraftful, sofistikerad, tobak, cigarr (93)

Övr: bordeaux, stalligt, blyertz, västra Bdx, lite kalifornia, hög ålder, tidigt 90-tal, Bdx hög klass, 86:a, (3116 views)
Tasted by mariow on 4/25/2020 & rated 90 points: perfect bottle, bottom neck; light elegant claret; went well with a lamb shoulder; opened 4 hours before consumption, did not decant; drinks still well (2672 views)
Tasted by Markus IWC on 3/25/2020: 92 points Wine Spectator
No tasting note given. (3/1987)
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
During the decade of the eighties, Mouton was the hottest first-growth in Pauillac. The 1984, which is almost 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, will be one of the longest-lived wines of this vintage. The wine is full bodied, tannic, concentrated, and rich in extract. It should have a surprisingly long life. This is a considerable surprise in a generally poor vintage. (1/1998)

Riktigt bra efter lite luftning, drack med H (2819 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 2/2/2020 & rated 88 points: Much better than anticipated, this is a nice Mouton, albeit light and quite green in character with its lean to herbs, forest leaf, cedar and mint. The red fruit is dosed in tobacco leaf in the finish. Probably better 10 years ago, OK, make that 20, if you have a bottle, there is no reason to wait as this is only going to fade with age. (4301 views)
Tasted by Vinophiliac559 on 10/15/2019 & rated 92 points: Wow! The nose on this was stunning. Leather, cigar box, sweet tobacco notes, nose alone this was outstanding. Palate was a little thin, probably a product of the vintage, but still showed very nice mature fruit, resolved and soft tannin, great acidity, finish was average length. Drinking great now and I imagine a well stored bottle still has some life ahead. (1903 views)
Tasted by Binkey on 1/18/2019 & rated 88 points: Classic Mouton with soft tannins, leather, tobacco and sweet spices aromas.even though 1984 it was a bad vintage, its condition was very good. (2776 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 12/22/2018 & rated 94 points: Round, fully accessible, black cherry fruit, loads of leather (2644 views)
Tasted by Nels+ on 9/23/2018 & rated 91 points: Great and seductive nose with notes of strawberry, plum and cigar box. Extreme fineness in the mouth, great acidity and tannins, spicy, plummy and with a good smoky length. Positively impressed despite bad vintage. (2756 views)
Tasted by mariow on 12/25/2017 & rated 90 points: bottom neck; plum red; intense nose of red fruit; classic claret, elegant, subdued fruit on the palate; drinks very well; opened 4 hours before serving, but not decanted (4053 views)
Tasted by Sgt Pepper on 10/21/2017 & rated 85 points: Too old. Opened, no decant but waited 20 minutes. Had next to no nose, tasted a tiny bit oxydized, but had decent acids, nice tart flavor for another 30 minutes or so then faded to oblivion. Should have drunk this 10 years ago! (4167 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 6/16/2017: No formal notes, over dinner. Not much to add to Sinequanon's review. The nose is really quite gorgeous - a little herbal at first, then pencil shavings, tobacco, sweet spices, undergrowth. A bit of a let down on the palate - thin, almost diluted, lacking fruit, finishing quite abruptly. The acidity is sticking out a little. Drink up. 88-90? (4815 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 11/19/2016 & rated 92 points: Slightly opaque, dark garnet colored, medium bodied, nicely balanced, classic Bordeaux characteristics of dark berry, plum and black cherry fruits, tones of floral, earthy leather with cigar box and tobacco. leaf with light mouthfeel, silky smooth polished tannins on a moderate subdued pleasant finish.

Tasted by SineQuaNon on 9/19/2015 & rated 88 points: From an A level bottle of perfect provenance. Great nose here of medium+ intensity. Some smoke/tar and the telltale Mouton spice box. Also cigar box and tobacco leaf development. Beautiful nose. Nose alone merits an outstanding rating. Body is too light for that though but it is not tired or even past it's prime. Drinking wonderfully! Just a perfectly mature claret with personality. (8257 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 4/18/2015 & rated 90 points: Subdued nose, green streak, red fruits, some wood. Tart mouthfeel, bitter tannin, maybe a bit past prime, still nice to experience. (7552 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
