Community Tasting Notes (average 90.7 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 51 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by vinus_operandi on 3/10/2024 & rated 93 points: beautiful example of a midweight classico that has aged perfectly. a nose of dried rose, sweet cherry, tar and worn saddle leather. on the palate, you get an amalgam of complexity all tied together by mostly resolved tannins and still bright acidity. there's the sweet cherry, the sous bois, some balsamic notes, and a nice long finish. the first taste of this, just put a big smile on my face. this was a great bottle of barolo even though it was from a classico. magic in a bottle!

day 2 - had the 2nd half of this bottle with a steak. perfection! (203 views)
Tasted by Doc Blinet on 8/12/2023 & rated 90 points: Woody and mellow but not a lot of truly distinguishable flavors. (461 views)
Tasted by vinus_operandi on 4/26/2023 & rated 91 points: classic Serralunga barolo. opens with a robust nose of cherry, dried roses, black tea and sous bois. on the palate, there's dark cherry mixed with a nice earthiness and some iron. the wine is in a good drinking spot right now with the tannins having softened and the fruit starting to develop some nice complexity. a very nice normale overall with a fabulous qpr. the Serralunga fruit is nicely balanced with good acidity and depth. I really love the aromatics of this wine. the wine continues to gather weight after about an hour in the decanter. paired well with grilled strip steak and sauteed Hosta shoots. (660 views)
Tasted by Andrew67 on 3/24/2023: Fine, structured, balanced. Good length. Drinking well now, but with space to improve. (674 views)

Tasted by talid on 5/20/2022 & rated 92 points: Classic Nebbiolo. Tar roses and leather with herbs - savory? Bouquet garni? Fully integrated tannins with nice acidity. Not huge but got all the characteristics. In prime shape right now. (892 views)
Tasted by pickhardt on 11/20/2021 & rated 91 points: Great QPR. Significant but not overwhelming tannin. Interesting complexity. (1263 views)
Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 11/15/2021 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 30 minutes. Drinking really well right now. Nice firm tannins, good acid and sour cherry fruit. Leather and a slight touch of oak on the finish. Good depth. Three hours later it was still going strong. 90-91 (1215 views)
Tasted by Edorf on 5/15/2021 & rated 89 points: Typisk Nebbio-brun på kanten.
Tung, god lukt, krydder, cedertre, meget bra lukt
Tørr, krydret, tung smak, meget mye tanninner, typisk heftig barolo. (1463 views)
Tasted by Mtnbkrmark on 3/10/2021 & rated 90 points: After 30 minutes of decanting this opened up nicely. Dark cherry and tobacco notes with the tannins in the background. Nice bottle (1263 views)
Tasted by anderegg on 12/10/2020: We did not keep detailed notes.
The wine needed about 20-30 minutes to come together and fill out.
We drank this with a chicken and tomato stew over polenta with a tossed salad.
Delicious.
This was a "small" 750ml bottle. (1270 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 10/19/2020 & rated 90 points: Really nice nose of tar, Rose's and cherry candy. Leather, spice and cherry on the pallet. Ok mouthfeel and finish. Tennis are almost completely integrated. Solidly in it's drinking window. Good QPR at a 30 price point 90 --91 (1316 views)
Tasted by Sniffy-Sniff on 9/19/2020 & rated 91 points: Drinking nicely with 30 minute decant. Not a powerful wine, but certainly nuanced and great with food. Picked up a little more weight on day-2. (1395 views)
Tasted by Eugenedinapoli on 9/12/2020: garnet heading towards tawny. Sweet oak notes tonight. As it opened leather and tobacco in the background. (the oak reminded me of the oak on American pinots).

day 2, wow this really came together the oak notes have been completely integrated into a melange of Nebbiolo aromatics/flavors. So elegant and nuanced. (1205 views)
 Tasted by weinmatt on 4/17/2020 & rated 93 points: 1 of 6

Exceptional balance, dried cherries, roses, raspberry, leather, tar, and latent tea. Very open at 6 hours. Was great early but maybe open it a little earlier in the day next time? :)

That's a good Barolo and the 500th bottle I've recorded on CT. Looking forward to seeing this age. (1377 views)
Tasted by Eugenedinapoli on 12/21/2017: Quick note. 1 hour decant. Medium garnet. easy drinking and real approachable. Nice nose of Tobacco, leather, licorice and the other usual suspects. On the feminine side. Medium body. Nice. (3921 views)
Tasted by VinCapitan on 12/10/2017 & rated 95 points: black jelly beans, red cherry on fennel, roses and tar. Standard grippy and silken tannin. Will go for days! Could drink for days. Magnificent. (3812 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 2/11/2017 & rated 85 points: Had to make some room for additional wine purchases , filled up a rack in the cellar and this was the odd bottle out. Did the right thing and threw it in to a decanter for about 3 hours while I worked on dinner. Initial nose in the decanter was dark cranberry, cherry cola, spicy birch beer and some earthy black tea hints in the background. By hour 3 this was much brighter, with juicy red cherries and menthol notes coming through but also noticeable heat which gave it the essence of a Ludens cough drop. This caries through to the palate with a medicinal iodine like note on the finish. Decent acidity but the tannins provide all the structure right now. Honestly I preferred it on the pop-n-pour where there was more spicy-earthy complexity; opens up with air to a more modern, fruit driven style. Its a good wine but not my preferred style, will be drinking through my last bottle sooner rather than later. The B evaluation still seem appropriate to me (85). (5437 views)
Tasted by WineKnurd on 11/11/2016 & rated 84 points: Pop n pour- nose of black cherry kirsch that opens up with some time to reveal more floral and earthy notes. Red cherry palate with red licorice and tarry notes. Tannins add a leathery-to-woody texture and some some forest floor from the oak in that traditional old school, more masculine style. Finish is quick due to the tannins but plenty of structure for aging. 14.5% abv adds that liqueur note on the nose but seems in check on the palate for now. $30 Last Bottle, FS on 4, like that price. Overall B (84) Evaluation for now, thinking 2-4 more years before it enters it's window and will offer really nice value if those tannins integrate well. (5602 views)
Tasted by Moterani1981 on 1/28/2016 & rated 90 points: Tasted again 6 months after first bottle. Opened (not decanted) for 45 min. Already loosing some of the fruit and developing tar/roses/sandalwood nicely. Tanins well integrated by now. (7163 views)
Tasted by Chuck C on 8/21/2015 & rated 90 points: Has that distinctive dusky italian red wine color, with smooth tannin and nice cherry aroma and flavor. I love Barolo's and this one is a nice example of them. Probably could use a couple more years in the cellar. Glad I have three more bottles. (5166 views)
Tasted by Moterani1981 on 6/16/2015 & rated 92 points: Great Classic barolo. Still needs some time. At least another 6 to 12 months. (6064 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 4/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Clear, light ruby color. Legs in the glass. Clean aromas, good intensity, lots of primary notes but very nicely layered secondary notes- cherry & rose hips, with dried herbs, sandalwood and mushroom. Elegant and feminine in style on the palate, with strong, well integrated acidity and fine and gripping polished tannins. Showing tangy and bright cherry with layers of savory floral herb depth. Juicy & full finish. Very nice- showing nice accessibility. (5146 views)
Tasted by epiphany on 4/11/2015 & rated 91 points: Developing nicely (4134 views)

Rivetto

Producer website

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)

Azienda Agricola Rivetto is a 4th generation Piemonte wine making family situated in the eastern hills of Serralunga d’Alba. The family entered the area’s wine trade in 1902, buying and selling both wine and grapes. Today they have 37 acres of vineyards, all organically farmed, in a top section of Barolo.

The Rivetto story began in Alba when great-grandfather Giovanni opened a shop that became a primary trading post for wine and grapes in region. By 1922 the family business evolved from merchant to wine producer under grandfather Ercole, who insisted on the use of only the highest quality Langhe grapes. The family business expanded in 1938 with the purchase of Tenuta Loirano and its vineyards in the Serralunga and Sinio hills. After decades of hard work and planning, in 1970 father Sergio was able to build a modern winery at their Loirano location, planting new vineyards to expand production.

Today the winery is run by the Sergio’s son, Enrico Rivetto. Under his leadership the winery’s portfolio includes Dolcetto, Barbera, and Nebbiolo. The Barolo range includes a classic Serralunga Barolo, a single vineyard Barolo Briccolina, and a Barolo Riserva. In recent years Enrico has taken on the revitalization of an indigenous white variety, Nascetta, which neared extinction until a small group of producers rediscovered it in the 1990s.

In 2015 Rivetto released its first sparkling Nebbiolo, Kaskal, another passion of Enrico’s. Kaskal is part of the Nebbione project; a unique winemaking process followed by a small group of producers using the once discarded tips of Nebbiolo. Those tips yield the most acidity, making them ideal for a sparkling wine.

The winery’s evolution, like its wines, continues. The family’s minimalistic approach in the vineyards (using zero synthetic chemicals or fertilizers) was formally recognized with its recent organic certification. After his 2015 launch of Kaskal, Enrico won’t slow down, moving his attention to the installation of two new vineyards of Nebbiolo and Nascetta in the nearby village of Sinio.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
