Community Tasting Notes (average 87 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 3 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by VeniceCalif on 6/11/2015 & rated 87 points: My second comment, about 18 mos. later: Decanted 90 mins. ahead. Dark garnet color. Nice nose of herbs, cherries, sandalwood, red currants. Medium-bodied on the palate, not soft but veering toward softness in acid balance, as red-fruit flavors lead. It's not sprightly. Finishes fast, with low grip and near-zero tannins. Pleasant, moderately interesting; the fruit mix is the best thing about it. (1237 views)
Tasted by VeniceCalif on 10/29/2013 & rated 88 points: Decanted 90 mins. ahead. Ruby color with purple touches. Nice earthy nose with mushrooms, blackberries, black cherries. Spice flavors lead on the palate, including cinnamon and cardamon, over black cherry tones. The finish is drying, with tea notes and a bit of grip along with very low tannins. Acidity and earth notes are key to this wine, a very pleasant bottle which is juicy and very much worth drinking. (1568 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 7/27/2013 & rated 86 points: Dark ruby color; brett, tart red fruit, tart cherry nose; tart black fruit, iodine, tar palate with medium acidity; medium finish (13.5% alcohol; sample provided by winery) (263 views)

Andis Wines

Producer website

Andis Wines was conceived in 2008 as a collaboration between Andy Friedlander and Janis Akuna, prominent Hawaii entrepreneurs, and veteran Amador County winemaker Mark McKenna. Inspired by the enormous potential of the highly diverse and spectacular vineyards of the Sierra Foothills, Andis began crafting supple, deeply fruited and concentrated wines with the 2008 vintage.

The Estate, acquired in 2009, provided a perfect setting for building a modern boutique winery with stunning views, exquisite architecture, and a state-of-the-art winemaking cellar. Located atop a gentle slope at 1,500 feet above sea level, the 25 acre vineyard was planted in 1978 to Zinfandel. In addition to the Estate, Andis sources grapes from 23 other vineyards scattered throughout Amador, El Dorado and Clarksburg. Our wine list includes both common and not-so-common varieties including Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Chenin Blanc, Barbera, Grenache, Mourvedre, Primitivo, Petite Sirah and of course Zinfandel. All our fruit is hand sorted and fermented in small lots to promote complexity, diversity of style and varietal correctness. Using both traditional and innovative winemaking approaches, Andis Wines have quickly garnered 90+ point scores in Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast, glowing reviews in print and online media, and placements in some of the finest restaurants in Northern California and Hawaii.

Barbera

Varietal character (Appellation America)
Varietal character (Wikipedia German)
Varietal character (Wikipedia English)
Barbera is a red wine variety, originally from Italy, which is best known as the second-most important Piedmontese variety after Nebbiolo. The wines made of this grape are mainly the everyday drinking wines of the region. The main appellations producing Barbera are Asti and Alba.

Barbera - The most widely grown red wine grape of Piedmont and Southern Lombardy, most famously around the towns of Asti and Alba, and Pavia. The wines of Barbera were once simply "what you drank while waiting for the Barolo to be ready." With a new generation of wine makers, this is no longer the case. The wines are now meticulously vinified, aged Barbera gets the name "Barbera Superiore" (Superior Barbera), sometimes aged in French barrique becoming "Barbera Barricato", and intended for the international market. The wine has bright cherry fruit, a very dark color, and a food-friendly acidity.

Estate

In the United States, "Wines with “estate bottled” designations must: a) also designate an appellation of origin or an AVA, and both the vineyards and the winery must be located there; b) the grapes must come from vineyards owned or controlled by the winery; and c) the wine must have been produced, from crush to bottle, in a continuous process without leaving the winery’s premises."

- WINE LABEL FAQS: A QUICK SUMMARY OF LABEL DESIGNATION RULES" by David E. Stoll

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
