Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 129 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by sempervinum on 5/8/2024: Meat, dark fruit, vanilla, garigue. Herbs. Really long. A bit of alcohol. Full bodied. But not heavy. Acidity perfectly integrated. Fine tannins. Very good. (58 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 12/26/2023 & rated 93 points: Age has done this wine well. The huge primary fruit has mellowed and this has turned into a very balanced wine that is delicious and smooth. (181 views)
Tasted by sempervinum on 11/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Dark core, slightly brownish rim. Lobenberg writes about old vines partly prephiloxera. Organic manure. Small yields lead to an immense concentration. Very ripe harvest. On the verge of jammy. Still some freshness from its acidity. Dark fruit aromas, spicy. Not overdone with wood. Interesting wine. Quite a contrast to Cune Real Reserva 2016 which was less bold but with equally ripe or maybe tamed tannins. (233 views)
Tasted by Vandelaar on 10/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Still a powerfull mocha infused companion. Does mellow out a bit compared to the beastyness it had a few years back but I also seem to note a step back in complexity and completeness. Or I have become a more critical taster over the past few years... (208 views)
Tasted by NJH1122 on 2/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Fruit to start then transitions to earthy notes with a savory finish. This wine is excellent and I would recommend pairing with a nice piece of steak, game, Bison, or lamb. (667 views)
Tasted by Fatty Cat on 10/1/2022 & rated 91 points: Early Oct 2022: deep red purple color; surprisingly restrained nose of herbs and flowers sprinkled with red berry aroma; like a liquid cherry chocolate cake on the palate accompanied by a balanced fruity acidity and strong mild tannins; medium/full body. 90-91/100

14.5% vol. alcohol. (810 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 1/11/2022 & rated 93 points: Excellent! (1066 views)
Tasted by Aparritz on 7/12/2021 & rated 94 points: 4th of 4 bottles and I couldn’t be happier. Tasted every three years going back to 2013. This was just gorgeous. Perfectly integrated with some residual grit and tannin. Underscores my love of toro wines — and this tasted like it could go a number of more years yet! (1426 views)
Tasted by millerarner on 1/30/2021 & rated 94 points: Just finished the last of 16 bottles we’ve been enthusiastically enjoying over the past several years. It’s kind of like saying goodbye to an old friend we’ll never see again. Really great journey with this stuff. Just wish we’d had the discipline to make it last longer. (1597 views)
Tasted by Vandelaar on 9/3/2020 & rated 93 points: Still have four of these bboys in the cellar and was reading notes that it might be time to drink up so started to worry and fired up the grill to slow cook a picanha in coffee cocoa rub. Damn that was a nice combo.
This wine is far from deceased but far more approachable than a few years back. leather and mocha are dominant, wet forest floor, figs, a bit animal. Fruits still present but in a more modest way. Creamy texture with enough freshness to keep it lively. Intense wine with a good complexity. I really enjoyed it! (1484 views)
Tasted by Nahebub on 12/8/2019 & rated 90 points: from magnum. decant for 2 h. black colour, spicys, medium body, good length. too young (1758 views)
Tasted by WilD on 11/28/2019 & rated 91 points: Still nice drinking. Not the blockbuster like 2 years ago but nice dark fruit, mocca, nice oak influances. Drink it now. (1549 views)
Tasted by K&J on 10/1/2019 & rated 93 points: Great modern Spanish red from the Toro region! (1396 views)
Tasted by hdn on 7/7/2019 & rated 92 points: Weinig proefnotities genomen. Was op het eind van een lange namiddag met wat te veel alcohol. Algemene indruk. Donkere, zwoele , haast kauwbare wijn. Best niet te warm drinken. Rijp, rond, lang. (1330 views)
Tasted by millerarner on 12/21/2018: Another great showing. Will be quite sad when we run out of this. (1583 views)
Tasted by Aparritz on 11/17/2018 & rated 93 points: Continues to be solid. Benefits from a good decant, but otherwise this should hold on for at least a few more years. Very, very good. (1267 views)
(1964 views)
Tasted by millerarner on 3/15/2018: Still big and bold, but balanced. (1758 views)
Tasted by WilD on 2/16/2018 & rated 92 points: Drank out decanter. Massive dark fruit. Mocca, blackberries, some leather, vanilla. Nice aidity backbone. Still going strong! (1642 views)
Tasted by Vandelaar on 12/29/2017 & rated 91 points: Still very good but was not so impressed as my last bottle. Drinking well now but still has potential for further ageing. (1714 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 12/7/2017 & rated 92 points: Big and bold as expected. Lots of dark fruits, some underbrush, and the tannins are still very present despite a long decant. This can last a lot longer I think. (1739 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 11/23/2017: Cata Histórica Puntido y Victorino con Marcos Eguren (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid): A beautiful expression of Toro. Memories of sponge cakes with vanilla on the nose. Intensely fruity. Elegant and fine. On the palate it is very smooth and well balanced, controlled acidity, existing yet polished tannins and contained length. There is no great structure that is compensated with minerality. Elegant and fruity wine.

Una bonita expresión de Toro. Recuerdos a bizcochos con vainilla en nariz. Intensamente afrutado. Elegante y fino. Al paladar es muy suave y bien equilibrado, acidez controlada, taninos existentes pero pulidos y longitud contenida. No hay gran estructura que queda compensada con la mineralidad. Elegante y frutal. (1728 views)
Tasted by redz on 11/22/2017 & rated 90 points: chewy, full-bodied. Needs food, held up to barbecue. Not fading yet (1242 views)
Tasted by tbuysse on 2/21/2017 & rated 92 points: Typical Toro style. In-your-face straightforward. Nice, smooth, even creamy texture. Could last several more years, but I would recommend drinking now. (2323 views)

Spain is the third largest wine producing nation in the world, occupying the majority of the Iberian Peninsula with vast diversity in climate, culture, and of course, wine. From inky, dark reds of the [Priorat] to dry, white Finos from Andalusia, Spain can easily boast of elaborating a wide variety of notable styles. Within Spain there are currently 62 demarcated wine regions, of which a handful have gained international recognition: [Rioja], Priorat and [Ribera del Duero]. Yet these regions are only a small sample of the high quality wines Spain produces. Regions such as Cava, Penedes, Somontano, Galicia, Rueda and Jerez are only a few of the numerous regions worthy of exploration throughout Spain. Spain can also lay claim to having the most land under vine in the world, growing up to, by some accounts, 600 indigenous varietals of which Tempranillo is their most well known. Other popular varietals include [Garnacha], Bobal and Monastrell for reds and for whites; the infamous [sic] Palomino Fino grape which is used in the production of sherry wine, Pedro Ximenez in Montilla Morilles, Albarino used in the creation of the bright, effervescent wines of Galicia, and Verdejo in Rueda. - Source: - Catavino.net

Spain is not in the forefront of winemaking for its dessert wines, other than for its sweet wines from Sherry country including the highly revered Olorosos (when sweetened). But apart from Sherry Spain has a range of styles of dessert wines, ranging from the those made from the Pedro Ximenez grape primarily in Jerez and Montilla-Moriles) to luscious, red dessert wines made in the Mediterranean from the Garnacha (Grenache) grape. Some good Moscatels are made in Mallorca, Alicante and Navarre. The northwest corner of Spain, Galicia, with its bitter Atlantic climate, is even making dessert wines, called “Tostadillos” in the village of Ribadivia (similar to France’s “Vin de Paille”). The Canary Islands have made interesting dessert wines for centuries (they are mentioned by Shakespeare, for example) and in recent years the quality of winemaking has been improved and the Canary Islands wines are being better marketed now. The winemaking styles for “Vinos Dulces” are also diverse, from “Late Harvest” (Vendimia Tardía) to “Fortified Wines” (Fermentación Parcial). Based on in-spain.info.
