Tasted by efeldhake@yahoo.com on 2/28/2021 & rated 91 points: Deep garnet and color with bricking edges. Nose of dark cherries, black currants, and hints of leather. Taste of dark cherries, tobacco, hints of strawberry and leather. The tannins are mostly resolved and still some fruit but it dissipated after a couple hours of aeration. Drink now and over the next three years. (470 views)
Tasted by mjgkng on 4/14/2020 & rated 92 points: Black cherry and tobacco. Rich with long finish. Surprisingly well aged but cork disintegrated. (533 views)
Tasted by efeldhake@yahoo.com on 11/10/2019 & rated 91 points: Deep garnet and color with brick and edges. Nose of dark cherries, black currants, and hints of leather with slight heat. Taste of dark cherries, tobacco, And hence of strawberry and leather. The tannins are mostly resolved and still some fruit but it dissipated after a couple hours of aeration. Drink now and over the next three years. (624 views)
Tasted by mjgkng on 2/3/2019 & rated 89 points: A bit past it’s prime but nice cherry and tobacco. (809 views)
Tasted by NickA on 12/26/2018 & rated 85 points: This feels on the way down - last two bottles from a case purchased at the estate. Oddly still some tannin, so better with food (cold cuts in this case), but also now lacking fruit or other flavours. The thin body and attractive acidity mean this is still drinking nicely though. (949 views)
Tasted by mjgkng on 12/3/2017 & rated 90 points: Bad cork, but decanted for 1 hour. Nice deep cherry and vanilla. (992 views)
Tasted by SanderB on 8/14/2016 & rated 91 points: Explosive nose, showing mouth watering cassis and black currant. Strawberry, orange and cola. Concentrated fruit flavors. Long expressive finish with some tight acidity on the tail. (1776 views)
Tasted by mjgkng on 7/5/2016 & rated 88 points: Bad cork. (1820 views)
Tasted by Sgift on 2/13/2016 & rated 90 points: My previous comments hold but this wine won't for much longer. At what, twelve years, it may be peaked and declining. Still a really good bottle with less richness, but if your holding some. Cheers! (2057 views)
Tasted by PeterMole on 9/4/2015: Fully mature now. I love it when waiting for years pays off. It does here. Harmonieus, integrated, enough complexity. See recent other notes for details. (2230 views)
Tasted by Spirits for the Soul on 12/28/2014 & rated 90 points: A gorgeous subdued wine. More leather with soft cigar box and spice. Hints of dark berries.

Lighter weight with dark fruit expressing wonderfully on the palate.

Drinking beautifully. I think I will give my last bottle a few more years and see what happens. (2388 views)
Tasted by mjgkng on 6/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 1 hour before drinking. Nice texture and bouquet. (1865 views)
Tasted by PeterMole on 12/22/2013 flawed bottle: corked (2077 views)
Tasted by thebonnydooner on 12/1/2013 & rated 91 points: Interesting wine. Some say, needs more time, others, drink up.

After about one hour open, I would say the drink up camp is probably right. Transluscent plum garnet in colour with a light plum garnet rim. Forward and expressive nose, shows some nice blackberry and blackcurrant fruit, some complexity with nice leather and a dark tarry note. Medium bodied, bright black plum and dark cherry fruit. Dry, but with some sweetness to the fruit. This is a tasty and well balanced wine, nice finish. (1926 views)
Tasted by PeterMole on 8/22/2013: Needs carafing. After 1 day recorked very good, full bodied. Meaty. (1741 views)
Tasted by PeterMole on 7/11/2013: See recent Sgift for notes. Drank from the bottle, next day slightly desintegrated. So I will not decant. Seems to be a little feeble, drink up. (1437 views)
Tasted by blash on 4/30/2013 & rated 91 points: Very good wine. Nice nose. Tastes include plum, black cherry, smoke and mild spice. Nice finish. (1365 views)
Tasted by cartime on 9/30/2012 & rated 91 points: Similar flavors as last time, but this time, it was drinking well right out of the gate. Tannins have smoothed out a great deal over the past year, but the acidity is still there. A nice bottle. (1476 views)
Tasted by Sgift on 2/19/2012 & rated 91 points: I really like this wine. It is a great example of a Cabernet based Tuscan wine. The visual is a beautifully translucent ruby shine. The nose begins with leather, toasted spice, red cherries and earth. As the wine opens on your pallet the cherry and berries step up with some smoke and tobacco. All beautifully structured and integrated. I decanted but not sure it needed to be as it was pretty and pretty consistent over the two, three hours. Enjoyed with steak and tomatoes, all good. Great super Tuscan.

tomato salid and throughly enjoyed the pairing. Great super Tuscan that's ready to rock!

Tasted by cartime on 12/24/2011 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured. This still has a few years left. An Old World palate of dark berries, roasted herbs, leather, and earth. Firm tannins. I'd let this breathe for a couple of hours if drinking now. (1783 views)
Tasted by monist on 10/9/2011 & rated 87 points: Drank with red sauce with beef and pasta. Nice match. Earthy nose. Medium dry to dry finish. (2123 views)
 Tasted by sarlyb on 4/16/2011: noah & faiza - apr-2011 (2196 views)
Tasted by schellbe on 8/23/2010 & rated 87 points: Leather, ripe fruit in nose. New world style. A lot of cherry, butter and smoke in the nose. Light purple color. Ripe cherry flavor with very tannic finish. (2375 views)
Tasted by eastover on 1/15/2010: Out to dinner with Herb, Elaine and Lisa to Giotto in Montclair. Elaine enjoyed the Chardonnay, We finished the Volpaia and drank half the Luscious (gave Lisa the remainder to take home). (2534 views)

Garagiste (4/27/2011)
(BALIFICO Volpaia) Redux Dear Friends, A number of offers over the last few weeks have left many of you without an allocation – quantities have been tight and it’s been very difficult to get everyone what they wished for. Two items in specific caused a number of you to send me “not so happy” notes – the 2006 Faiveley Les Porets and the 2004 Balifico – both sold out so quickly there was barely time to blink. I was unable to acquire additional wine at the same low wholesale price but I’ve found a small parcel of each at closer to what they should cost (also with perfect provenance). Considering so many of you were shut out on the first go-around, I will pass along the original tariff on both wines as a show of good faith. If you have any interest in either wine, please let Nicki know at your earliest convenience (preferably this evening or early tomorrow morning – thank you in advance): 2006 Faiveley “Les Porets-Saint-Georges” 1er (Nuits-Saint-Georges) - LIMIT 6/person No, this isn’t Romanee-Conti but it sure is nice to have a well-made bottle of 1er red Burgundy (in the ) in the cellar; compare at in the US. 2004 Castello di Volpaia “Balifico” (Tuscany) - LIMIT 3/person No, this isn’t Sassicaia but it sure is nice to have a well-made bottle of Cabernet-based Tuscan wine (under ) in the cellar; compare at Both are FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to the stated limits until we run out. To order either of the above: nicki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to arrive in a few weeks – it is not a long-term pre-arrival (please check OARS for local pick-up after May 15th). It will ship during the Spring shipping season if weather allows. Out of state orders will be held for free under ideal storage conditions (56 degrees/70%humidity) until shipping is possible. Locals may pick up at their leisure. For current local pick up and arrival/ship information, please see your OARS link below (at the bottom of this offer) - don’t know how to access your OARS? SuperTuscan Blend

SuperTuscan Blend refers to wines which feature a significant Sangiovese component combined with grapes not traditionally associated with Italy like Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. This separates it from "Sangiovese blend" which is used for wines which are predominantly Sangiovese and combined with traditional Italian varieties. There is often confusion as many wines most famous associated with the term "Super Tuscan" like Sassicaia, Masseto and Ornellaia have no Sangiovese and are properly linked to 'Red Bordeaux Blend.'

In fact, Super Tuscan was a term coined to refer specifically to wines such as Sassicaia and Tignanello. These were wines that "fell out" of the official DOCG classification of Italian wines because they either contained grapes not permitted (international varietals such as cabernet sauvignon or merlot,) were aged differently (I.e. in barrique) or were 100% sangiovese - which was not permitted at the time for Chianti (E.g. Fontodi Flaccianello.) Forced to be classified as simply "Vina di Tavola" these wines nontheless quickly found favour in international markets and comanded prices above the highest quality DOCG Chianti Classico & Brunello di Montalcino wines at the time. The wine industry and press began to refer to these wines as SuperTuscans because of their popularity and quality, but also because of the prices they commanded. Subsequently, the Italian authorities, under the Goria Law 1992, redrew the classifications, and included the category IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica) to classify the SuperTuscans.
