Tasted by ken@ampy.com on 5/26/2022 & rated 91 points: Very pleasant wine. No signs of age, nose opened up over an hour. Consumed at The Westerly in San Diego, went well with wild mushroom Risotto. Not a overly nuanced wine, just a solid Bordeaux from 2005. Quite enjoyable and a good value. Obtained on Wine Bid for $15.00 plus auction fees. Wish I had more. Based on this bottle there's no need to rush to consume however I doubt there's much room for improvement with further cellaring. (965 views)
Tasted by jdemeter on 1/16/2022 flawed bottle: Over Oxidized. Flat and low flavor. (1126 views)
Tasted by WittOnWine on 4/14/2021 & rated 89 points: Really strong value. Beautiful deep ruby color. Black fruit, black currant, tobacco and baking spice on the nose. Balanced acidity, alcohol and tannins well integrated. Overall excellent value as the 2005 vintage shines through. (1873 views)
Tasted by lake.vino on 10/12/2020 & rated 88 points: Nose black currant cedar mushroom and smoke. Palate slightly hot and menthol notes. Big fruit and tannins not fully resolved. Decent acid. Good value for sure. (2121 views)
Tasted by tunaguy on 7/18/2020 & rated 89 points: managed to not listen to my own note of wait a couple years on this and opened my last bottle of this with a flat iron steak from the local butcher. Similar notes but a touch more cohesive than before. honesty could have just been mood but a very nice bottle with an hour decant. (2456 views)
Tasted by mattym19 on 4/24/2020 & rated 88 points: Decanted for an hour-plus. This is still very primary. Nose is full of ripe, dark fruit: currant, plum, very ripe blackberry and some oaky spicy quality. Palate is dripping with more ripe fruit, slightly redder this time, with cherries and raspberries and a hint of mint with a strong streak of acidity followed by an equal-if-not-stronger streak of tannins. Blind I might have called it a slightly younger Cali Cab. It’s not a bad wine, but it’s just not quite dense enough and way too primary for my tastes. (2098 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 4/9/2020 & rated 90 points: Impressive, especially for such a low pedigree wine. Plenty of life here, still vibrant. Impressive solid ruby color still. Fragrant nose has opened over several hours to reveal menthol, pretty red fruit, floral aromas, blood, and iron. Minerally fruit, tannins resolved, a little gritty, good grip but a bit ragged on the long finish. Quite a bargain, and shows that pedigree is a state of mind. 4-13-15-8: 90/100. (2106 views)
Tasted by tunaguy on 4/3/2020 & rated 88 points: consistent with previous bottle. Think I will hold last bottle for a couple years (1482 views)
Tasted by tunaguy on 1/6/2020 & rated 88 points: lovely food wine. needs an hour of air to come together but after that it has a harmonious mix of leather, tobacco, darker berries, a touch of bell pepper, and wet earth. still the structure to go another 4-6 years if you want it to (1476 views)
Tasted by Snowey on 12/15/2019: Lovely wine. Had some sediment at the bottom of the bottle/last pour. Fruit is still present as are the tannins. On the second day the fruit faded faster than the tannins and the nose retreated substantially.
Does that mean it needs to be drunk sooner rather than later? (1300 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 8/19/2019 & rated 91 points: Sweet dark spicy aromas of cigar box, blackberries, nutmeg, beautifully melded. Deep sweet salty fruit on the palate with a fine aromatic acid finish, a one-big-gulp experience rather than a finely articulated progression. A fine argument for letting those cru bourgeois bordeaux reach their maturity. A perfect match for mapo dofu. (1540 views)
Tasted by brinko99 on 5/1/2019 & rated 89 points: Excellent showing.... Harmonious, pretty fruit remaining, all integrated, clean (not the brett I previously noted). A touch soft at this point suggesting that now is the time to drink up (1596 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 12/7/2018 & rated 88 points: Nose of roses, graphite and dark berries. Simple palate with a nice balance of fruit, tannin, and acid. A simple pleasing claret. 50 + 15 + 15 + 8 = 88. (1869 views)
Tasted by sdwineguru on 11/18/2018 & rated 90 points: $19 estate-bottled Medoc has improved with more aging. Blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot. Mid-dark garnet; herbaceous, mint, cedar and terroir nose; mid-body; balanced; long, smooth, flavorful finish. w/marinated beef on the BBQ. (1673 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 10/20/2018 & rated 88 points: Nose of graphite, black plum, lilacs. Nice dose of dark fruit on the palate with plenty of acid backing, a bit of tannic bite, well integrated. Uncomplicated, pleasing. 50 + 15 + 15 + 8 = 88. (1823 views)
Tasted by redz on 9/1/2018 & rated 91 points: continues to improve, still austere, moderate tannins, needs a few hours decant, young (1375 views)
Tasted by fmginc on 8/11/2018 & rated 89 points: wonderful flavor deep & rich (1218 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 1/13/2018 & rated 92 points: This is everything I love about Garagiste. Jon has found an amazing middling Medoc that's in perfect drinking window now and offers low alcohol, perfect balance, finesse and optimal food pairing. Just a delight with plenty of future ahead if you're lucky enough to have some in your cellar. (1690 views)
Tasted by redz on 1/12/2018 & rated 90 points: only getting better, classic medoc flavors after 2 hr decant. (1617 views)
Tasted by mtaczak on 1/8/2018 & rated 90 points: totally different from the last bottle, this had none of the funk and weird off-putting aromas, but was instead a lean, classic bordeaux that felt like it was still a decade away from being ready to go. 2005 is definitely one of my favorite vintages, as even $20 bottles are offering fantastic drinking pleasure. (1562 views)
Tasted by wgmccallum on 6/11/2017 & rated 89 points: Generous nose of blackberry, pencil lead, violets, oak on the nose. Furry tannins on the palate, with a solid fruit core, firm acid support. Portly, muscular, reassuring. 50 + 16 + 15 + 8 = 89. (2292 views)
Tasted by wmccone54 on 6/4/2017 & rated 89 points: This is still monstrous for 11-1/2 years, even with decanting. Enjoyed over two days. Initially, the wonderful black fruit is completely dominated by oak, tannin, and acidity. It takes at least an hour in the decanter for the black fruit to start showing. Dry and tannic throughout.

On the second day this was much more approachable and showed very well with the wine showing a much better balance of fruit, tannin, and acidity. This appears to be built for the long haul. I would hold for another 2-3 years before trying again. (2177 views)
Tasted by redz on 5/8/2017 & rated 89 points: I didn't read my own note from last year, should have decanted. Tannic, opening up to dark fruit. (1708 views)
Tasted by Aparritz on 9/27/2016 & rated 89 points: Agree with WGMCCALLUM's TN here. Holding well for an 11 year old. Decanting is a must, and in general, this is a solid value and an interesting 11 year old exploration of a Haut Medoc. (2372 views)
Tasted by redz on 9/14/2016 & rated 90 points: drinking well, decant helpful, no barnyard (2243 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Médoc

Appellation Webpage (Conseil des Vins du Médoc)

The land with the Médoc appellation links three kinds of Médoc terroirs: Garonne gravel, Pyrenees gravel and soils of clayey limestone. Taking account of the huge area the appellation covers, these terroirs are extremely varied in character. Thanks to this variety of terroirs, the infinite palette of the wines with the Médoc appellation has distinction, roundness and a balanced personality. They may be full bodied with a fine ruby red colour. They should be kept a long time for their many nuances to develop. Others are elegant, subtle, with a fine bouquet, ready to be drunk younger, though this in no way reflects on their exemplary finesse. In order to have the right to the Médoc appellation of controlled origin, red wines must: - come from the peninsula bounded on the east by the Garonne and the Gironde, on the south by Blanquefort Brook, on the west by the Atlantic Ocean but excluding the communes of Carcans and Hourtin, Brach, Salaunes, Lacanau, Le Temple, Le Porge and "land of recent alluvium and sand lying on impermeable subsoils", - satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (170 grammes - 6 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°) base yield (50 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Malbec, Merlot
Soil: Alluvial terraces of gravel deposits, light, good for Cabernet, and deep and clay-like, good for Merlot
Surface Area: 5,522 ha
