Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Tig78 on 3/13/2024 & rated 93 points: PnP. Given its leanness and high acidity, I poured into a decanter without agitating and enjoyed over ~4 hours. At first, it was lean with sour cherry notes and little else. By the end of the evening the wine had put on weight and depth, showing its mineral side and darker fruits. This certainly evolved into a beauty and given how much life was left in this bottle (not yet at peak), and I plan on waiting 5 years to open another in the hope of seeing the tertiary characteristics of this riserva Brunello.  Tasted by VinoEtSeq on 12/30/2023 & rated 94 points: Earthy aroma with beautiful red fruits. Drinking perfectly now. (311 views)
Tasted by rfarrar on 8/10/2023 & rated 95 points: this was a very smooth wine; no acidity, not tannic overload; I dont think this could have drank any better than it did tonight. The bartender and HOME's owner went nuts over the wine.
fruit forward with a hint of cranberry, earthy but not over the top.
This made for a great evening (422 views)
Tasted by Terramare on 1/1/2023 & rated 93 points: Still very excellent! Suggesting 2028 end-date. (746 views)
Tasted by AWBryce on 8/18/2021: lovely, still very youthful, big acid and structure, ripe red fruits, could go another 15+ years easily. (707 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 8/2/2021 & rated 92 points: Similar experience to my 2019 note (1429 views)
Tasted by matt5588 on 7/3/2021 & rated 93 points: This was our last bottle of 2006 Riserva and it did not disappoint. I will admit, I am a big fan of Poggio Antico but that does not take away from the beauty of this wine. We opened 90 minutes before tasting and as the dinner progressed the wine improved immensely. Great tannins and very good berry overtones. We took a chance and paired it with skirt steak, farro mixed with corn, roasted cherry tomatoes and goat cheese, served room temp along with sautéed mushrooms. It was awesome…thank you Poggio Antico (1266 views)
Tasted by Scutz on 3/3/2021 & rated 89 points: drink now (1270 views)
Tasted by Ct Bordeaux on 12/23/2020 & rated 94 points: My first bottle from the case, and i was concerned from prior tasting notes that i would be disappointed-- not at all. With 2 hours decant this wine is in its prime. The bouquet and flavors were classic and rich, with a meaty tinge and a 40 second finish. It paired perfectly with salmon, and pasta with a red sauce. Definitely a 94 with upside potential. Should drink for at least another 5 years. (1186 views)
Tasted by ShawnWarmstein on 8/14/2020 & rated 93 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Showed nice red fruit and terroir (1395 views)
Tasted by JSolo on 1/25/2020 & rated 92 points: With Italian dinner at David Grisanti's. Very good. (1131 views)
Tasted by metldr on 12/29/2019 flawed bottle: This wine had a terrible nose, stinky is a word I would use. The taste was also not good. We poured the wine out after one hour. Very disappointing. (1395 views)
Tasted by H&D on 7/4/2019: This was the bottle we bought when we were in Italy 2015. It was a wonderful experience. (1552 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 4/7/2019 & rated 91 points: 2hr decant. A little thin. Nothing like the 07 altero. Hoping it gets better in time but not hopeful. Wait a few years for next bottle. (1733 views)
Tasted by JSolo on 1/18/2019 & rated 93 points: I thought it was outstanding with Manicotti. (1170 views)
Tasted by Charogers on 9/16/2018 & rated 91 points: I thought this might be too young to open but not at all. I had expected more fruit and tannin than there seemed to be. People enjoyed this at the dinner, particularly those who like wines on the more delicate side (which include me), and while it's pretty good, I came away a little disappointed. A little thin / lacking structure maybe. Remember enjoying the 04 more. (1552 views)
Tasted by repoper on 11/8/2016: Decanted for there + hours. A touch corked. Even thru that it was not as good as expected. Certainly in no rush to drink these. Maybe an off bottle will reserve judgment until next one. (3660 views)
Tasted by matt5588 on 10/15/2016 & rated 94 points: This is the first bottle we opened since we visited the winery in 2013 and we were not disappointed. Super silky Brunello magnificent aromas with notes of cherries and vanilla. Still have 15 bottles of '04's, '06's '07's and 08 to enjoy (3325 views)
Tasted by UBD on 8/20/2016 & rated 93 points: Drinking well. A few years left before it hits its peak. (3408 views)
Tasted by franinnyc on 7/29/2016 & rated 90 points: Liked the 07 better. But very nice. (3397 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 7/24/2016 & rated 93 points: At the winery with Giulia: Brown sauce/spice, ripe, intense cherry, cherry skin, intense red fruits, super silky, lovely spicy aspect/Italian herbs; great structure, length, but still young. Very well made, excellent. Made only in exceptional years. 1 yr. French tonneau and 2.5 yrs botte grande. (3016 views)
Tasted by brown57 on 5/30/2016 & rated 92 points: Bottle from our 15th anniversary trip to Montalcino last year where we visited Poggio Antico. The trick with age worthy wines like Brunellos seems to be knowing when to open them. We have some 2010s but are keeping our hands off those for now so decided to go ahead and open this 2006.

Very aromatic right out of the bottle, the nose will take you straight back to Tuscany if you've ever been there. The profile is one of dark fruit (blackberry) with notes of black licorice, dried fig, and new leather. The oak from those big Slovenian oak casks is still very present, although not overpowering. In reality, probably should have held onto this one for a few more years as I do believe it will continue to improve if stored properly. (1292 views)
Tasted by Dogsaw on 11/14/2015 & rated 92 points: Smells like dinning at a enoteca in Siena. (1731 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 10/20/2015 & rated 91 points: A week in Tuscany (and Lots of wines); 10/19/2015-10/21/2015 (Tuscany, Italy): A much better showing than the 08's. I mentioned to my friends that I usually prefer the regular to the riservas as I don't think the extra ageing adds good stuff to the wine. Our hostess over heard that and stated "you are not wrong, from a particular point of view, but that point of view is wrong". Great quote. Her point was that the Riservas need to age even more. Oh well. In any event, this wine was quite good at 9 years from vintage. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has cherries, cedar and vanilla. Maybe a bit of forest funk too. On the palate, this has black cherries and vanilla. Oak tannins. Perhaps it still needs more time to get even better. I liked it, but I think the oak was bit too pervasive. In any event, I ended up buying the range of the 07 BdM's including the Riservas so over time, perhaps I can find out if my point of view was wrong. ;-) (2478 views)
Tasted by rpontual on 10/18/2015 & rated 94 points: Great red color, nicely balanced and good finish. It is ready to enjoy now, but I suggest more cellar time. (1542 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
