Community Tasting Notes (average 89.8 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 167 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Paul D on 4/26/2024 & rated 90 points: 2/12, vg cork. Decanted and immediately served. Deep ruby core, narrow pale ruby rim. Youthful nose, black and blue fruits, vanilla, touch of mineral. Medium/full, quite rich with ripe blackcurrant and blueberry fruit, vanilla, just a touch of cedar and mineral, fresh acids, good length still quite grippy finish. Has potential, should improve. (453 views)
Tasted by eb1202 on 3/22/2024 & rated 91 points: Blackberries, blackcurrants and cedar wood on the nose, the palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins. Beautiful ripe fruit, dark berries, graphite, earthy, nice complexity, (677 views)
Tasted by Klugi Wine on 3/10/2024 & rated 91 points: Similar to last note, probably even a touch more intensity. Excellent wine with quite some length and power and at least another decade of positive development ahead. (740 views)
Tasted by Racer117 on 1/2/2024 & rated 94 points: I believe this is the first wine I purchased knowing it won't be consumed for quite a while. How it was worth the wait. Dark color; nose of mixed berries, black currant, saddle leather; similar flavors along with some pencil lead. Med+ body with great balance of acid and tannins and a very long gripping finish. I don't think this is going to improve but if I had another bottle, I would be in no rush to open it.

I preferred this over a 2000 Ch. Leoville Poyferre. (1145 views)
Tasted by Ernestas on 12/23/2023 & rated 90 points: Coming back to yet another vintage of my beloved Moulis producer. Made from a blend of 50% CS, 40% Merlot, 5% PV and 5% CF. Deep garnet colour, ruby hue. Intense aroma of cassis, liquorice, smoky plums, tobacco, earth, toasted herbs, violets, hints of dried tomatoes. Medium+ body, earthy, toasted and smoky, flavours of earthy cassis, saline cherries, tobacco, medium density, fine medium tannins, medium+ acidity, medium+ finish. (842 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 10/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Académie des Cinquante 67th Annual Dinner: Crispy Cabernet, fresh and firm, no excessive extraction, bright and floral, lively and youthful, medium body, very good length. (1849 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 10/8/2023 & rated 91 points: Beautiful and mature bouquet with autumn forest and still some red and dark berries. Same on the palate. Good acidity and tannin with still a pleasant bite. Drank this wine over three days and it hardly showed any decline over these three days. (1367 views)
Tasted by DGS Wine Lover on 7/29/2023 & rated 91 points: Nose had hints of cigar box, saddle, and pencil. Wine felt fleshy on the palette with smooth tannins, black currant and violets. More complex than the last tasting. No sign of aging. (1225 views)
Tasted by drjb on 7/20/2023 & rated 91 points: This wine is slowly maturing to reveal its pedigree with a deep nose of blackcurrant fruit with touches of white flowers, dark cherries and cedar. The palate remains relatively closed after an hour of decanting but slowly reveals a rich linear core of dark fruits that leads into a savory cedar and tobacco finish backed by a long line of fine tannins. This remains fairly stern but recalls Lafite in its line of dark Cabernet fruit. There is no hurry to open further bottles of this wine. (1081 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 6/4/2023 & rated 91 points: 1/12. No formal note but this was very enjoyable, with ripe dark fruit but also a lovely smoky, mineral undertow, fine tannins, fresh acids, good length. (1307 views)
Tasted by Shugs_Claret on 4/21/2023 & rated 91 points: Stewed fruits on the nose and palate. Resolved oak and fine tannins. Pleasant but atypical for the appellation. (1283 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 4/15/2023 & rated 90 points: Cigar box nose, quite fleshy, fruit slightly struggling to assert itself against the tannins. Good with food. (1119 views)
Tasted by ThalesGaspar on 8/16/2022 & rated 92 points: Took a while to open up, great on the nose and very complex on the palate, but still tannic. Hold another 5 years at least. (2291 views)
Tasted by pdadams66 on 8/7/2022 & rated 90 points: Deep dark center, red rim with only modest signs of age.
Sweet, cassis, plums, toasty oak.
Smooth, blackcurrants, black cherries, gravel, a touch of Brett, good acidity and tannin still, meaty finish with some green notes.
Excellent Bordeaux (especially for the $29 paid 11 years ago), drinking well now on the second day. Probably needs 5+ years more. (2010 views)
Tasted by OW_SOSPEL on 7/17/2022 & rated 88 points: Belle couleur grenat, quelques reflets tuilés. Opalescent, brillant. Belle finale, persistante. 7-8 caudalies. 88. (2119 views)
Tasted by Henstee on 7/3/2022 & rated 89 points: Solid vin med flot struktur og god balance nu (2008 views)
Tasted by schneesurfer on 6/16/2022 & rated 90 points: Nice Poujeaux, fully matured! Much better than the disappointing 2000. Drink now over the next 5 ys. Won’t improve. (2344 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 2/21/2022 & rated 91 points: Gareth's Cru Bourgeois Dinner (Hawksmoor, Guildhall, London): A touch closed at first - then rich, ripe blackcurrant fruit, touch of chocolate. Youthful, medium/full bodied, rich, ripe dark fruit, spice, hint of meat, firm but fine tannins, well covered by the fruit though, fresh acidity, long finish. Needs a bit more time but this should be excellent. (2301 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 2/21/2022 & rated 89 points: Gareth’s ‘Cru Bourgeois’ @ Hawksmoor: Bright ruby. Denser, slightly dustier nose. Similar on palate to the 96, just a little more tannin but food-friendly approachable now. **(*) (2122 views)
Tasted by foyfrcs on 1/28/2022 & rated 89 points: Deep garnet.
Black cherries, brambles, spice nose.
Earth, tar, dried black fruits palate.
Medium bodied, tannins quite well integrated , medium + finish.
Very good wine and should continue to drink well for 5+ years. (1919 views)
Tasted by olebaer on 1/7/2022 & rated 88 points: first sniff: pencil, mineral, wet stone, peat
second sniff: cabbage, vegetal
third sniff: leather, tobacco, cigar box, blackberry

eye: ruby, unfiltered, sediments
palate: mineral (like licking a battery [don‘t ask]), dark chocolate, red cherry.
tannins are surprisingly high but not that well integrated.
acidity is medium
alcohol unobtrusive

all in all the 2005 Poujeaux appears undecided: young and fruity or already tertiary flavours? maybe time will tell.
I have too much of that in my cellar.
I’m missing the reason that made me name my cat Poujeaux 2004: that seductive nose of licorice.

not decanted, no food pairing, drank at 15°

Edit after 24h: pumped off air and kept it in the fridge for 24 hours.
nose: lovage, eucalyptus, cassis liqueur
palate: more bitterness and acid.
drank at 22° food pairing with cheese selection. (1973 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 12/29/2021: 13.5% alcohol. This note is based on the last glass in a bottle that I opened yesterday, so maybe to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Rich nose with a harmonious blend of berries, tertiary notes and some oak. Equally convincing in the mouth, with a balance worthy of a good St Julien.
Having had the 2005 and 2006 in close succession, there is no doubt that the 2005 is a notch above. (1903 views)
Tasted by Tarabucetta on 12/25/2021 & rated 89 points: Good typical médoc, dark colour, ample nose, too much oak on the palate. (1365 views)
Tasted by Armando B on 11/6/2021 & rated 91 points: Very nice. Tastes like bdx from a nice year with a little bit of age on it is supposed to, Dark fruit, earth, a bit of cedar. Tannins mellowed but still there. Medium plus bodied. Fantastic mouthfeel. Would be as easy as pie to tell where this was from if tasted blind. (1736 views)
Tasted by lozatron on 9/12/2021: Saturday night at home with friends and Thai takeaway: Tasted in the interests of science following a pretty disappointing showing earlier in the week. This was lovely - full, still some fruit there but with some complexity - cedar box and pencil lead. Not wildly outperforming like some vintages of this wine, but jolly decent.

Interestingly, Simon G had wondered if there were some low level TCA in the previous bottle. I had thought not but this makes me wonder if he was in fact correct. (2036 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.
