Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 16 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by GiantRam on 8/22/2020 & rated 90 points: Shiraz is not my type but this wine turns out to be a lovely pillow hugger. What I mean is that the wine is everything in the middle.. tannis is softer than cab sau , dryness and sweetness are in the middle.. plus it is bold with medium acidicity. Chocolate and hint of berries. Very good bargain and quality with USD 22 I find out this wine is good to chill and snack with friends. One turnoff is the screw top (863 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 4/18/2020 & rated 91 points: Stelvin closure. Very fresh, still some red berries and a hint of cassis. This is a very good bottle and amazing value for £13. (1040 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 3/19/2019 & rated 90 points: Comparison tasting of stelvin versus cork closure

Cork; dusty mouthfeel with a lot of sediment. Getting to the rich, semi-sweet stage with oxidation imminent, lots of eucalyptus over the fruit.

Stelvin; fresh, bright fruit, brighter colour in glass, fresher aromatics, acidity holding well

On this sample, stelvin wins it easily, 90/91 to 89.
Stelvin, good for a few years yet, cork needs to be drunk soon (1407 views)
Tasted by barrkel on 1/30/2019 & rated 90 points: Still has some decent tannins, and depth of fruit, mild acidity. Pleasant sipping, fair hit from alcohol though. Good. (1441 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 11/30/2018 & rated 90 points: Still quite deep with a smokiness to it.
Fruit has mellowed but thankfully not stewed.
Very enjoyable and perhaps not in need of drinking as badly as I had presumed although I’d recommend drinking in the near future. (1507 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 8/17/2018 & rated 89 points: Cork closure.
Just past it’s peak with a hint of portiness. This doesn’t detract from the enjoyment as there’s still some nice character there and felt like it improved with a little air.
Have read the stelvin closures are still fresh as a daisy.

Lots of fine sediment in this bottle as with previous so recommend standing for at least 24 hours before opening if you can.

If like me you have a cork closure, drink up now and best to do it in one sitting. (984 views)
Tasted by empire80 on 5/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Stelvin closure. Some black fruit has survived the 15 year journey to here, but balanced by some savoury licquorice and herb notes, and a long finish rounded off by a hint of acidity. (972 views)
Tasted by DanielOsman on 7/20/2017 & rated 90 points: Double decanted through muslin cloth having been stood upright for 4 days. Drank over three nights. Each night the characteristics changed.
First night the nose was plum, bramble and a whiff of cherry. Palate was soft, bramble fruit hint of tobacco and tar, and a pronounced mint leaf on the finish. Medium tannin and mild acidity.
Second night nose developed more tobacco and tar. Palate was dark berry fruit and tobacco more pronounced and mint fading.
Day 3 and nose is licorice, tobacco and tar, slightly jammy fruit notes. Tannins have softened, acidity down to a thread and now much more of the tobacco, tar but with licorice and chocolate.
Lovely development, probably best on day 1 for my palate, but really nice still all the way through. Would drink in the next year or so. (1034 views)
Tasted by MSheridan on 9/4/2016 & rated 92 points: On opening last night the foil was sealed well tight - no chance of prem ox here I think. Nicely sunk long, unlabelled cork.
There was a waft of vanilla ice cream and bramble and blueberries from the glass after pouring and a similar flavour profile, with a slight mintiness too. Inky dark colour still.
Tannins were still a bit grippy and it felt very heavyweight in terms of flavour and alcohol (without the burn though)
Day 2 and this is a joy to drink, really smooth and flavoursome, still heavy in (delicious) flavour, but the tannins have dissipated but there's a nice cut of acidity at the end. (1253 views)
Tasted by DanielOsman on 7/26/2016 & rated 89 points: Drank this over three evenings. This is a pretty bold wine. 100% Shiraz has power and weight. Nose is dark fruits and some herbal notes.

The fruit comes through on the palate. Blackberries, cherries and blueberries. Tannins are soft and there is acidity at the end leaving a long finish. It's slightly sweet and almost jammy, which I quite like.

There is a lot of sediment in this. Stand upright for 24 hours and decant. I filtered through muslin too but the extremely fine sediment still made it through on the last glass. (1266 views)
Tasted by ravbik on 3/8/2011 & rated 91 points: Mature, takes at least two hours to open up after decant. Soft tannins, nice blackberries, pepper, blueberries, slight tobacco and tar (2954 views)
Tasted by jivey on 6/4/2007 & rated 90 points: Berry Cherry, blueberry, blackberry long 45 sec+ finish. 14.5% (3082 views)
Tasted by tcfishler on 1/12/2007 & rated 87 points: Dark but not opaque maroon-red. Lots of oaky vanillin on the nose, but also some pleasing rose and tobacco. Sweet and fairly soft, with decent persistence and a very smooth texture. Moderate finish. (2827 views)

ROB GIBSON

Rob began his wine interest in New Zealand during a working holiday in 1974 working for Penfolds in Auckland. When he returned to Australia during the vintage of 1975 he worked in the Penfolds Cellar as a crusher operator and assistant in the red wine fermenters. IThis commenced a long and fruitful career over 22 years under Penfolds tutillage. In 1979 Rob was offered a Penfolds Wines Traineeship to study winemaking and viticulture at Roseworthy College by the Management at the time which included the legendary Max Schubert. Rob completed his winemaking studies between 1979 and 1981.

In 1981 and 1982 The Chief winemaker formulated a viticulture project aimed at selecting the very best quality Shiraz grapes for Grange Hermitage production. This ground breaking work developing new assessments and discovering new information about the production of the very best Shiraz led to the establishment of a dedicated Viticulture department. The new systems connected the vineyard block characteristics at verasion and again prior to harvest with the resultant wine characters and wine value. He led this department as group viticulturist until he left to start Gibson Barossavale Wines and his International Consultancy in 1997. This background forms a basis of the unique Gibson Winegrowing Approach.

This 22 years established Rob as a well-bred winemaker…seeing the great Penfolds wines evolve and tasting winestyles around the world as he travelled from Germany to France to Italy to Italy to South Africa and California.

ANNE GIBSON

Anne commenced her involvement in the wine industry at the beginning of 1986 when she worked in the International/Export Department at Penfolds based in Nuriootpa. For ten years the department gave her experience of dealing with international wine buyers, exporting wine and hosting guests that would visit the Penfolds Wine Group in Nuriootpa.

In 1996 Anne transfered within the company from Export Public Relations to the Red Wine Making Department where she worked as Personal Assistant to Chief Winemaker (John Duval) until 2003. This considerable experience means that Anne understands a lot about the wine community around the world. She manages the office and visitor side of Gibson Wines and you may find her at Cellar Door occasionally.
