Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by americanstorm on 11/20/2023: This was terrible. A recent addition to my cellar and either this didn't have a good storage history, something the seller claims is not the case, or this has aged terribly. Either way, while not totally undrinkable, it was poured down the drain because life is too short to drink bad wine. (265 views)
Tasted by mmh on 11/7/2021 & rated 94 points: Wow, this is outstanding! Although there are some tertiary aromas with sweet liquorice and leather, the overall impression is very fresh with some flowers and a hint of menthol. Similar notes on the palate, along with a good acidity and smooth but firm tannins. Long, complex and very drinkable. Do I have to say this was a great match with osso bucco and forest mushroom risotto? (855 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 9/13/2020 & rated 86 points: Pop and poured at the end of a lot of drinking. Felt like something was off with this bottle. Others liked it but I was ambivalent at best. If this was not an off bottle this has not aged very well. Definitely not worth the 68$ price point.had a lot to drink by the time I got to this but I don't think that colored my judgment. (970 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 5/4/2019 & rated 94 points: Half hour decant, Rose, leather and a touch of spice on an outstanding nose. Licorice and cherry plus other things I can't identify on the pallet. Great mouthfeel and long finish.
A little blue cheese seemed to make this explode with flavors. Tannins are very fine and well integrated. A really nice barolo that is drinking very well. I thought it fairly priced for the quality it delivered. 94+ (1102 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 10/27/2018 & rated 91 points: Decanted 3 hours. Brick red color. Cherries, leather, some complexity. Medium to long finish. (1382 views)
Tasted by Ak74 on 10/19/2018 flawed bottle: Taste like acetone / kerozine (1329 views)
Tasted by Anders T on 9/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Tegelröd färg. Ljusröd frukt i doft och smak, främst körsbär. Även viss nyans av tobak och läder. Bra struktur med en hel del tanniner kvar vilket är positivt. Överlag en bra Barolo, 91 poäng med snudd på 92. (1094 views)
Tasted by americanstorm on 4/8/2018 & rated 95 points: Decanted 4 hours and it was absolutely fantastic with some flavors I have not found in any barolo before, perhaps a little port like. Great nose and long finish. At the 6 hour mark it changed into something different and more like other high end barolo I have had. Drank it with a 06 aldo conterno colonnello and I thought that at the 4 hour mark it was better but at the 6 hour mark the colonnelo was better. Still, an outstanding wine that I would buy again and that I highly recommend. Drank with: 2000 masi mazzano amarone, 06 aldo conterno colonnelo barolo, 09 darioush cab, 09 sbragia Rancho del oso cab, 98 raymond generations cab. (1313 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 3/24/2018 & rated 90 points: Drank over 2 days. Brick red color. Cherries, leather, a bit earth on the palate. Some complexity. Not as good as the last bottle. Medium Finish. Nice and easy drinking. (1398 views)
Tasted by strawbo on 12/25/2017 & rated 93 points: Decanted 3 hours prior to drinking. Classic Barolo with violets, liquorice, cherries and dry tannins. Good stuff. (1343 views)
Tasted by skurtz on 7/13/2016 & rated 93 points: Double decanted at the winery, in a vertical comparing with the 2012 and 2000. Very aromatic, complex nose, vanilla, violets, tar, and herbs. Bright cherries, raspberries, oak, meat, and, yes, some noticable tannins into the finish. Nice acidity to carry the finish for quite a while. Still a young masculine Barolo that will only improve with age. (1389 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 10/24/2015 & rated 91 points: Improved a lot since the last bottle 2 years ago. Decanted 2 hours. Drank over 2 days, night in the fridge. Opaque dark brick color. Cherries, dark red fruit on the palate. Will improve further. Very good. (2484 views)
Tasted by semimey on 9/6/2015 & rated 92 points: Opened three hours ahead. Very good but still a bit young. (1338 views)
Tasted by Sepsis on 5/9/2014 & rated 92 points: Bold maskuline barolo. At this point fruit is suppressed and tannins are opulent. Give it time and it might turn into something beautiful. (1424 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 1/29/2014 & rated 94 points: Barolos ( and few more) (Chris's): My WOTN and the groups runaway winner. Purple in color. The nose is tight, with air it opens and is beautiful showing cherries, dark cherries, tar and an herbal note. Great texture. Black cherries on the palate and firm tannins. Long finish. Improves all night. (2188 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 11/9/2013: Decanted for 3 hours. Dark brick red. Palate was closed and not giving much. (2805 views)
Tasted by DRS-Inc on 6/22/2013 & rated 92 points: Tasted at the 2013 Cal-Ital Summer Wine Fest Grand Tasting in the Grand Ballroom of the Golden Nugget Casino in Atlantic City, NJ. Excellent & among the WOTN. (2841 views)
Tasted by Ak74 on 6/8/2013 & rated 96 points: Black berries, truffle, rum
Lots of tannins, need paired with heavy food (3041 views)
Tasted by ChrAgner on 6/8/2013: June 2013 - not ready to drink yet. Lot of tannins (2641 views)
Tasted by DonalOB on 6/4/2013 & rated 91 points: Barolo Cannubi with James Suckling (Domani, Hong Kong): Decent cherry nose. Smooth, balanced palate but bit short. Drinking ok but not shining in the company. (2457 views)
Tasted by MDLS on 6/1/2013: Wait and then wait some more. Plenty of air ( 1 hour decant and several hours slow ox ) - the nose was beautiful but needed time to show and kept evolving even on day two. Not much to work with when tasting, very closed and needed food to show a minimum of its potential - will have to wait several years to open the next bottle and by then it will be excellent - hopefully. Poderi Luigi Einaudi Barolo Cannubi

There has been some confusion about the names "Nei Cannubi" and "Cannubi".
According to the producer it is the same wine, but in 2009 they chose to leave the "Nei" out of the name.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
