Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 56 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Harry Cantrell on 8/20/2023 & rated 93 points: Garnet with tinted orange rim. Nose with garrigue and hint of raspberry. Taste of garrigue herbs, hint of raspberry. Drink now. (257 views)
Tasted by Joelene on 12/3/2022 & rated 91 points: Delicious mature cdp, had @Biba with grilled salmon (487 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 10/18/2020 & rated 91 points: BYO with friends - The 2000s (The Ranch by Aston's): Medium garnet. Rounded tannins, and having a juicy ripe black fruit character, as well as some savoury spices and slight minty. Pretty good length and complexity (1088 views)
Tasted by Gemofwine on 10/18/2020 & rated 95 points: Complex, strawberry, raspberries, chocolate, earthy.
drinking well but drink now or soon. The sweet character of the Grenache is not obvious at this stage, but it aged nicely, with nose and palate in harmony.
Mellowed tannins, balanced, terrior minerals is very obvious. High dryness , Sharpness at the end. (929 views)
Tasted by Axone on 3/15/2020 flawed bottle: Vin imbuvable du fait d'une acidité totalement excessive. (959 views)
Tasted by cct on 12/25/2019 & rated 90 points: From Magnum. Double decanted for sediment and drunk over a few hours with braised lamb shanks

Saddlle leather, meaty, beef broth, black olives and thyme/ lavender. This is much more on the savory side of CdP. Mid plus weighted and for the most part resolved, fully mature. On the palate, again savory more than fruit driven with some dark berry fruits that add to the mostly meaty/ herbal notes that follow from the nose to the palate. A little rustic and feral, which I like, and that goes well with the comforting winter food. At the back side of peak in this format. Better with the food than by itself. (1110 views)
Tasted by Axone on 11/24/2019 flawed bottle: Demie-bouteille.
Le vin est trop évolué et a basculé du mauvais côté du vieux vin, sur des arômes de madérisation. (718 views)
Tasted by vinhonotte on 11/1/2019 & rated 89 points: GrandCuvee - CDP Dinner (New Ubin Seafood - Chijmes): A promising, complex nose starting with ripe redcurrants, then a plume of barnyard funk, then the purple flowers show themselves later. There are high tannins and acids on the palate, but they seem to be pulling apart from each other. Also, the fruits seem muted, somewhat like a simple berry juice (496 views)
Tasted by Mr Pinot Noir on 10/14/2018 & rated 91 points: Tasting my first of six. This wine is in a nice place. Showing classic brick red colors of a 20 year old wine. The secondary and tertiary aromas are suggestive of wet leaves, and cool red fruits. Taste of spices, herbs and cool, uplifting acidity. Bright and energetic. This could be confused for Burgundy because of the extremely light weight and mouth feel. I would bet some of my experienced blind tasting friends would mistake this for a jazzy Beaune wine.

The wine is bright, long and delicious. I'm not in a hurry. I think it's on a plateau and will be fine for a few more years. It's really a very interesting and beautiful wine. If you have some, try it. (685 views)
Tasted by vagrantone on 12/3/2016 & rated 91 points: Nice, classic Chateauneuf-du-pape drinking extremely well right now. Color is starting to turn ever so slightly but not alarmingly. Aromas are both complex and intense, no need for decanting, alcohol not allowed to take over, not an over-extracted style. I plan to drink remaining bottles within 2-3 years (1782 views)
Tasted by VDLT Wine on 6/18/2016: This as at least very good and well paired with herbs de Provence lamb chops. Likely caught it between secondary and tertiary phases. Fruit has given way to earthy flavor. Still ample structure and some tannin. Lots of olive, garrigue and mint. (2220 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 2/28/2016: Disappointing. Perhaps even flawed? Something funky and seemed a tad bit off too me but I can't pinpoint it. The cork was like brand new and no seepage whatsoever. Kind of miffed and interested to see what others thought last night. (3143 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 2/12/2016: Classic Mont-Olivet flavors of dark olives and spices in a light, elegant style, the way Chateauneuf can and should be made. (2556 views)
Tasted by Thomas B on 5/15/2015 & rated 91 points: Beautiful! Glad I still have one bottle left and it could still last a few more years (but I won't let that happen).
Subtler on the nose than the mouth - full of blackberry, bramble and a little plum. Finished in day 2 and still holding its own. (2815 views)
Tasted by paulst on 3/20/2015 & rated 88 points: Seems tired; earthy herbaceous blackberry; nice finish. (2129 views)
Tasted by Mr T on 2/7/2015: Still pretty good but showing its age (1634 views)
Tasted by paulst on 1/18/2015 & rated 89 points: Light fruity nose; licorice, raisen and raspberry; moderate finish. (1567 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 12/7/2014 & rated 92 points: Transparent ruby. Smells of balsam and garrigue. Fully mature. At peak. Tastes of subtle red fruits, garrigue, balsam with a nice tannic grip. Acids are fairly soft and the finish is long. If you have this wine, I would start drinking them. I don't think it gets any better from here. (1566 views)
Tasted by paulst on 4/19/2014 & rated 90 points: Light with cedar and some blueberry-blackberry; decent finish. (1831 views)
Tasted by Marcus Vin Rouge on 2/16/2014 & rated 86 points: Lean and nice, flesh and pepper, licorice. Low in the fruit, probably past peak. (1842 views)
Tasted by paulst on 1/24/2014 & rated 89 points: Cedar and tobacco; more like a pinot noir than granache; decent texture and length but still green. (1842 views)
Tasted by paulst on 1/12/2014 & rated 92 points: Zesty and opulent; nose of raisin and cedar; initially broad and deep raspberry-raisin with earth and tar; later it lightened with more cedar than fruit; still young with tight tannins. (1790 views)
Tasted by paulst on 12/11/2013 & rated 93 points: Nice texture with silky tannins; tobacco and leather with an earthy backbone; raisen; balanced and a nice coarseness; complex finish. (1802 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 10/14/2013 & rated 92 points: I popped and poured this wine, and from the first sip it was singing. Lots of fruit left, with plenty of herbal and leathery character. Very fresh in palate feel, with no heaviness at all. This was a beautiful showing from a traditional Chateauneuf in the prime of its life. (1810 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 9/30/2013 & rated 94 points: This was a late release bottle direct from the winery. Stunning wine! Gorgeous and delicious. Plenty of garrigue and balsam. Spicy, and long. This is the second time in 5 months that I have had this and both times it has been terrific. (1213 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
