Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.1 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 137 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Bobbusch on 11/21/2023 & rated 90 points: Been working through my “time to drink” wines. I was pleasantly surprised by this wine. Still showing some fruit. This wine has held its own. I would drink within the next year, as further age will not benefit the wine. (444 views)
Tasted by chokkon on 11/11/2023: No decant; 17c; dark, slightly coppered purple; nose of barn, leather, sage, pepper; soft attack, full fruit, bright tannins, long finish; stewed plums, cherries, licorice; still holding up. 18 (Next day it was drinking well, chewy dried cherries and plums, with a tight, long finish. Lovely). (407 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 12/15/2022 & rated 88 points: Note: I use the recommended scale, so 85 represents a very good wine

A bit from memory, but this bottle impressed me.
Decanted for about an hour, which I think helped.

Smooth and well-balanced. Best of the lot for me (and my last). (980 views)
Tasted by juffer on 5/31/2022 & rated 90 points: Typical nose of cherry and earth with a touch of mint. Medium weight. Good firm tannic structure on the earthy finish. (1334 views)
Tasted by Lyubomir Lefterov on 2/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Gorgeous wine from the moment you decant it. Ready all the way with that ripe cherry and forest floor, sweet spices but all combined in a sheer drinkability, fantastic for drinking now.
Purchased from the winery on my visit 4y ago for €40. I know the Gran Selezione kick started later, so this label must represent the same wine with no GS mark on it. (1431 views)
Tasted by jpinsb on 12/24/2021 & rated 95 points: Drank 12/23/2021. Perfectly matured, deep color taste and long finish. One of the best CCs that I’ve tasted (1240 views)
Tasted by winepog on 8/15/2020 & rated 91 points: Drinking well right now. Gripping tannins, good acidity and long finish. (2026 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 3/23/2020 & rated 91 points: Last bottle. Still performing well. Modern but good. See my previous notes. (1891 views)

Tasted by John Nezlek on 10/13/2019 & rated 86 points: Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine

From memory, so no detailed notes.
I remember being pleasantly surprised by this bottle. Nicely aged Chianti.
Good balance.

No need to hold. (1551 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 5/7/2019 & rated 91 points: Licorice, dark fruit, ripe, smoky, still very vivid and fresh, my kind of wine (1913 views)
Tasted by Anders T on 2/27/2019 & rated 90 points: En trevlig Chianti från Mazzei. (1419 views)
Tasted by John Nezlek on 10/28/2018 & rated 88 points: Note: I use a scale on which 85 represents a very good wine.

This bottle started off very promising. It was opening up slowly in a glass, and I decanted it. After a while, it seemed to lose a little of its depth and flavor. Still very good, but I was hoping for more. I will not decant the next one. (1427 views)
Tasted by Mossrose on 9/24/2018 & rated 94 points: Wine of the night at a double blind tasting where wine lovers each contributed at least one bottle. A stunningly good example of how great the 2007 vintage was in Chianti even for an under $30 non-labeled Riserva. 90% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot, and the rest several traditional red varietals approved for blending. Well structured by bright acidity and smooth edged tannin. Deliciously fruity red cherry, black cherry, and pomegranate. Overall, rich, elegant, and complete. (162 views)
Tasted by RussK on 9/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Russk. Andrea brought to CDC at Matchbox. The WOTN. A beautiful ChC. Balanced. Soft. At peak. 92- pts. (755 views)
Tasted by DrZett on 9/11/2018 & rated 91 points: In good shape right now. Beautiful berry nose. Good structure with lots of red ripe berries and dark cherry. My favorite vintage from our tasting evening. Drink now or keep it a few more years. Drank at Falstaff Mazzei tasting at restaurant Saittavini (Düsseldorf/Germany). (1180 views)
Tasted by chokkon on 7/13/2018: 18c; no decant; clear bricked-red; lush nose of cherry, sage, mint, funghi, bright attack, silken tannins and sticky fruit, long finish; bits of bacon and metal, loads of cherries and stewed plums, mint, tobacco, chocolate; yes, a bit flabby vs earlier vintages, but still a fine wine; the low ‘community value’ reflects the ‘straw flask’ brand image of Chianti, but if you can find this wine for <$30, you’re a QPR genius; 18 (1391 views)
Tasted by Bobbusch on 3/14/2018 & rated 90 points: Very well made. Still going strong. (1511 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 2/18/2018 & rated 91 points: Very good wine. Red fruits ans some blood/iron notes. Unmistakebly sangiovese with good acidity and a modern/international touch from the merlot. Fresh. Drinks very well now with opening 2+ hours in advance. Now and in the coming 5 years I guess. (1437 views)
Tasted by chokkon on 7/8/2017 & rated 90 points: No decant; 19c; dusty ruby-purple; flamboyant nose on cork pull, wet leather, barn, compost, mint, black pepper, juniper, sage, smoke; hot fruit, but solid tannins holding it up, firm grip, long finish; loads of black fruit (bit too much candy apple), schist, black cherries, mint, anise, sage, funghi; complex, though, per prior note, not the 2000, drink now!; part 2, second half of bottle 2 days later--cooled to 16c, which constrained the sloppiness; nose still a brooding, dark adventure (gorgeous), massive stewed plums and all the complexity still there; 18.5 (2603 views)
Tasted by otrevizo on 7/5/2017 & rated 91 points: Delicious (1225 views)
Tasted by Yngve on 6/10/2017 & rated 92 points: Perfect together with a lamb chop (2381 views)
Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 6/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Glass: Riedel Vinum Syrah
Popped and poured.
Clear, deep ruby-garnet color with some orange reflexes. Clean, medium+ intense and fully developed nose. Lovely cool aromas of amarena cherry, some cassis, smoke, tar, oak, bacon, spices (menthol) and some barn notes. Reminds me to a certain extend of a left bank BDX. Complex and elegant.
Dry, the high alcohol (14% abv) is buffered perfectly by the medium (+) acidity, so it is never too heavy or hot. Medium+ body and flavor intensity: Lots of cherries, salt, extract sweetness and some bitter notes. Very good structure from the medium+ silky and velvet tannin. Good complexity, medium+ finish. I think it start reaching its peak but will stay at this level for 5-10+ years. Wish I had more bottles… 91-93 (2213 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 1/20/2017 & rated 91 points: nice and prominent acidity, shows some evolution, typical Sangiovese with a Bordeaux touch, structured, power, red fruits emerges after some air, smoke, iron, blood, for this vintage very fresh (2807 views)
Tasted by Uncle John on 11/17/2016 & rated 91 points: Enjoyed 1/2 the bottle with pasta. Very nice Chianti Classico with dark fruit, nice acidity and smooth tannins on the finish. Big surprise was how good it was 48 hours later as the wine gained in complexity and texture. (2982 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
