Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 133 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jdurstjr on 2/14/2024 & rated 92 points: The tertiary flavors from aging made this one very enjoyable. Cherries, blueberries, forest floor and soft tannins all stood out. Mid palate and finish could have more, but the nose and palate were still beyond the common standard for a cab. (421 views)
Tasted by ktholland on 1/30/2024 & rated 92 points: Quintessential Napa Cab, crowd pleaser. Leads with big ripe red & blue fruits and big alcohol with black pepper spice, tobacco, coffee/mocha, vanilla and cedar to compliment. Outside of the prominent alcohol, this goes down easy with nice tannic grip and enough freshness to not weigh down the drinking experience. (463 views)
Tasted by Martyl9 on 10/11/2023 & rated 92 points: from a half bottle which was decanted since the cork broke. lovely from the initial sip with a bit of tannin; fruit was very pleasant. color a dark red. the fruit dissipated sadly too quickly leaving just alcohol. (725 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 8/18/2022 & rated 91 points: Another Napa crowd pleaser.

Tasted by Yack Man on 8/18/2022 & rated 93 points: Hall makes a ton of reds and many of them are pretty decent, this 2015 NV is no exception. It’s come around nicely, showing well for the price point. 92+/ 93 Points. (See previous notes). (2547 views)
Tasted by WineFrog09 on 3/29/2022 & rated 93 points: This wine never disappoints for Napa Cab and is bold but never overly jammy. It’s starting to integrate and evolve into a fantastic wine, especially for the price. (2450 views)
Tasted by golfhawk on 7/13/2021 & rated 91 points: Very good Napa Cab that is coming into it’s own. Can drink now or maybe last a couple more years. (3843 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 5/24/2021 & rated 93 points: This was a quick choice, a pop and pour experience and no decant or air. This time the wine came across as suppressed, inhibited, the flavors subdued this time around. With 2/3's of a bottle remaining, perhaps the remainder will show some improvement on day 2. As noted in my last note the color, translucent, a thin color of scarlet / Crimson. On the palate, berry fruit, medium/ dark berries, reddish dark cherry, some raspberry and currants. More medium bodied and probably because of the lack of flavors tonight. 90+ / 91 Points.

Day 2:
Much improved and more in line with the first bottle. A wine that is well worth the price of admission. This wine definitely benefits from decanting. 92+ 93 Points. Recommended. (4474 views)
Tasted by WineKnut on 5/1/2021 & rated 91 points: Bought for immediate drinking from a mini mall liquor store tucked between the gas station and Taco Bell. Not exactly your local Circle K. After all, they have a 2005 Lafite Rothschild ten feet away from the beef jerky rack.

This is the first wine my wife has had where she noticed wine evolving during a single taste.

Deep garnet and super clear. No sediment in bottle. Decanted about 1 hour.

The nose is really dusty, with boysenberry and licorice. Inviting, modern and showing maturity.

Palate confirms nose. Medium plus mouthfeel. Stewed black fruits, cherry, mint, menthol, vanilla and just a touch of leather, dust and cedar. Tannins well resolved. Nice balance but a touch of heat..

Finish is lingering. Fruits start out on the jammy side, but are brightened and freshened by reasonable acidity as the flavors evolve.

Drink or hold near term. I should note that the storage conditions at the liquor store are ok... but not ideal and may have affected bottle condition. (2897 views)
Tasted by WineTimeFineTime on 1/19/2021 & rated 89 points: This bottle was much blander than previous one. Fruit very dominant and sweet. Good fruit, but still mostly fruit overtones with some vanilla breaking late. I'd drink this with steak / red meat specifically. Didn't work quite as well on its own for me this time. (3219 views)
Tasted by Canadianwineguy on 12/31/2020 & rated 89 points: I’ve always liked this wine. Rich, excellent value, consistent vintage to vintage. This particular vintage is ready to drink now, judging by the softness on the palate. I don’t think this will benefit from further cellaring. Better than the frog pond but not as good as the honig, each of which are at a similar price point. (2897 views)
Tasted by Winowhyno on 11/23/2020 & rated 91 points: Wow....another year in the cellar made a big difference. Very smooth...beautiful nose....great balance and tamed tannins. Wish I had more than on remaining. (2637 views)
Tasted by pgb67 on 9/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Blackberry, berry compote, exotic spices and hints of graphite, a full-bodied mouthfeel, round polished tannins, and an impressive finish. Textbook $50 Napa cab. (3007 views)
Tasted by Echodog on 9/7/2020 & rated 91 points: Wine pours to a beautiful dark red color. Nose and tastes of dark fruit, blackberry, dark cherry, vanilla etc. Med tannins. Decent complexity. Very nice wine at a reasonable price. Their tasting room in Napa is amazing highly recommend. (2724 views)
Tasted by WineTimeFineTime on 7/6/2020 & rated 91 points: Needs time to open but once it does is very smooth with pronounced vanilla/bourbon barrel notes. Great with steak, even a bit sweet. (2946 views)
Tasted by Yack Man on 6/3/2020 & rated 93 points: A pleasant midweek surprise, the experience was better than anticipated. Decent but a deceptive translucent, rather thin color of scarlet / Crimson with a soft nose. On the palate, this wine delivered on flavors for the price point. Notably ripe berry fruit, medium dark berries, reddish dark cherry and some raspberry, currants and cedar wood. There is some stuffing to this wine, medium to full bodied and nice flavors for the money. 92+ / 93 Points. (3927 views)
Tasted by ralaspech on 5/21/2020 & rated 89 points: Nice ripe fruit but lacks depth and complexity. (2898 views)
Tasted by wildcatjw97 on 4/30/2020 & rated 89 points: Part of a tasting with 2016 Frank Family and 2016 Honig. This was a very close second to the Honig. It's light viscosity with a nice boysenberry, fresh and crisp smell. Mile blackberry taste but not overly fruity, with little length on the finish. My wife thought this had a little more bite in the back of the throat. Simple, but pleasant wine. (2806 views)
Tasted by JERB on 4/14/2020 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Very nice Cabernet blend. Good value at the $35 I paid. I read from other CTers that they are paying $50+ for this wine. At that price, I would be less impressed by this wine. Paired wonderfully with a grilled t-bone. Nose was very enticing - lots of dark berries, some earth, and some leather. The palate mirrored the nose. Lush mouthfeel and a nice bite on the finish. Probably could have waited another couple of years and it would have been even better, but it was definitely good this evening! (3012 views)
Tasted by rexmerlot on 2/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Dark purple in color. Notes of black cherry, licorice and tobacco. Dry, medium body, medium acidity, and elegant tannins. A beautiful Napa wine. (2853 views)
Tasted by Rico100 on 2/16/2020 & rated 90 points: Decent - not fab (3150 views)
Tasted by awkiii on 2/13/2020 & rated 93 points: great wine (2969 views)
Tasted by AndreRibeiroChaves on 1/4/2020 & rated 91 points: Typical Napa! Full body, smooth tannins, low acidity! Plenty of fruit and some earth flavors. Great quality for the price. (3215 views)
Tasted by LCHammer on 12/15/2019 & rated 90 points: Great value. I think this drinks well now with no decant. Light tannins which probably won't hold up to extended ageing. (3158 views)
Tasted by drdan8 on 11/17/2019 & rated 90 points: A well crafted Cabernet by Hall, but just a little too much extraction and sweetness for my liking. Maybe this will settle out a bit in bottle. (3385 views)

Hall

Producer website
Since first working in her family’s Mendocino vineyards, Kathryn Hall dreamed of a place to showcase fine wines alongside expressive art and masterful architecture. Now, Kathryn and Craig Hall are creating an unrivalled destination
in the Napa Valley—where winemaking excellence meets contemporary design to celebrate life and inspire the senses. In 2005, Craig and Kathryn Hall unveiled a state-of-the-art winery amid the legendary Sacrashe Vineyard in the hills
of Rutherford that is dedicated to making single vineyard and limited-production wines. The Halls acquired the historic Bergfeld winery in St. Helena in 2003, and are merging history and innovation with the completion of California's
First Winery to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Gold Certification.

HALL’s estate vineyards encompass more than five hundred acres of classic Bordeaux varietals; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc.
As winegrowers, the Halls have a strong respect for the environment and a commitment to cutting-edge vineyard technology to yield the highest quality grapes.
Through meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards, HALL wines are able to express the unique and diverse character of Napa Valley’s soils and climate.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
