Tasted by JonnyG on 7/22/2023 & rated 92 points: A beautiful bottle, laden with white pepper, black cherry, black olive, licorice and beef notes. Power and balance, hand in hand. (1040 views)
Tasted by JohnMcIlwain on 7/16/2023: Not a big wine as far as Cornas goes, but the 2000 is showing fine poise and the nose alone is worth the price of admission. No hurry, but if you have a couple of bottles no harm checking in either. Re-buy? In a second. (770 views)
Tasted by beatles on 2/28/2022 & rated 94 points: So juicy, sexy and warm. Still primary fruit here, but no hard edges, just pure you. Great harmony, great fruit, great balance. On day 2 & 3 this does not move much, still have years to go. (2208 views)
Tasted by beatles on 9/26/2021 & rated 93 points: Tasted vis-a-vis the 2001, this is richer, more smooth, more sexy, lacking just some of the eminent focus and precision, I found in 2001. People prefered this to the 2001 - but CP agreed, that 2001 is a bigger wine.

Tasted by Burgundy Al on 4/1/2021 & rated 90 points: Great Cornas Virtual Tasting (Chicagoland IL): Black cherry, licorice and roasted beef aromas, similar flavors with slightly less intensity. Rounded and softer than the other vintages, still showing wonderful balance, even if with much less concentration. (3131 views)
Tasted by LW31 on 3/30/2019: Perfect spot. Nose is all blood, iron and whiff of the barnyard. Palate has that tang of maturing Cornas but still showing elegant dark red fruits. There’s a hint of autumn on the finish, which suggests, like the largely resolved tannins, that this is a wine to be drunk over next 3-4 years at peak. (2898 views)
Tasted by acyso on 9/24/2018 & rated 93 points: Pausing for the Cause 2018 (Chicago, IL): "Like someone mixed olive brine with coffee," but far less off-putting. Rustic and heady, with some really nice dark fruit on the nose, there's a very nice lightness on the palate at the same time thanks to a lively vein of acidity. Fully resolved and ready to go now. This is in my own personal Rhone sweet spot. (4012 views)
Tasted by Greg07 on 7/16/2018 & rated 90 points: Need aeration, lovely wine, drink (2789 views)
Tasted by Raage on 9/24/2017 & rated 92 points: Magnum
92/93 (3284 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 4/27/2017 & rated 93 points: Northern Rhone Offline (Bar Agricole, San Francisco): Double decanted and tasted. Lovely medium ruby with slight bricking appropriate for its age; nose is moderately aromatic, red fruit, some meaty and gamey notes, slight white pepper; palate is medium bodied, superb bright acidity throughout without being shrill, iodine, fresh red berry fruit throughout, medium well integrated tannins, almost elegant texture throughout; medium-length finish. Nose is nice, classic Northern Rhone but somewhat young and reticent, palate overall is very young but well balanced and shows promise. I'm curious what some oxygen will add to the wine. 92-93
6 hours slow ox: highly aromatic nose, much improved, spice, plenty of fruit. Lovely wine, more rustic in structure and style than the Chave Hermitages, but it held its own. Very nice. 93-95
Day 2: held up well without really any significant changes positive or negative. (3753 views)
Tasted by alanr on 3/27/2017 & rated 94 points: Lovely mushroom/earth nose, quite intense dark cherry, some fine but present tannins, great acidity, showing very young still. Delicious now as a youngster, and shows great potential. (2866 views)
Tasted by beatles on 8/23/2016 & rated 93 points: Very similar to last showing, still more Cornas than Burgundy (thank you); ionide, olives et al, quite masculine. Still young, but drinking very well. Performed well head to head with Jamet 2000. #withRune&Peter (3558 views)
Tasted by salil on 4/10/2016 & rated 92 points: Nothing like Chicago hospitality...; 4/6/2016-4/10/2016: What a great flight alongside the '01 Jamet - that was a classic example of Côte-Rôtie; but this is proper Cornas with its intense dark fruit, leathery and briny notes, and a density on the palate and spine of firm tannin that suggest it still has a lot of time ahead of it. Time brings out more meaty flavours and other savoury depth, but it's still very young. (4988 views)
Tasted by acyso on 4/10/2016 & rated 93 points: Salil does Chicago 2; 4/6/2016-4/10/2016 (Chicago, IL): It was perhaps not too good to have this wine next to the 01 Jamet, which totally wiped the floor with this perfect example of old-school Cornas. There's a wild gameyness to the nose of this wine, as well as a heap of black fruit. With a little bit of swirling, you get a little more of the olive notes, but this wine is all about rusticity. Very dark and tannic, but there's ample acidic lift here to keep this wine enjoyable. (4354 views)
90-91 pts (3547 views)
Tasted by AtoZ on 11/11/2015: Drinking nice now. Lots of black olive. (3055 views)
Tasted by eboracum on 9/12/2015 & rated 92 points: Very good Cornas with, like 1997, more graciousness than in many vintages. Full/medium bodied with expressive nose and palate, it showed cherry infused fruit together with lively acidity and hints of grilled meat, olives and metallic leather on a much more velvety texture than the matt feel of old and was supported on the finish by firm but well covered tannins. Some feel that the present generation at Clape together with other producers like Allemand are losing the true Cornas character by excessively civilising their wines but I love them like this. (2438 views)
Tasted by mattyboy_ on 8/6/2015 & rated 92 points: Smoky, and savory. Very perfumed and a bit feminine for a Cornas, especially Clape. Fine texture with smoky mineralilty. Love the freshness and the energy here. (2622 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 7/25/2015 & rated 92 points: Rich and sombre colour, mature appearance; deep and warm nose, vinous, mature, toasted chestnuts, red meat, black olive, with subtle notes of black pepper, violets and cassis; rich and fleshy palate, ripe but lively acidity, largely resolved tannins still provide grip, rounded but sober and masculine, broad shoulders; good length. At restaurant 't Schulten Hues *, Zutphen, NL. (2469 views)
Tasted by beatles on 3/15/2015 & rated 92 points: This has tell-tal ionide, olives et al, this a great cornas. It is more Cornas, than I remember it from previous bottles, that has seemed lighter. More masculine, sauvage, though still very much on the elegant side for the genre. Still young, but drinking very well. (dinner chez moi) (2555 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 8/15/2014 & rated 92 points: A Syrah Friday at Domaine (Domaine Wine Storage, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose just screams Northern Rhone (though not necessarily Cornas) and is loaded with black fruits, bacon fat, black cherries, tobacco, leather, and bits of black olives. The nose is very complex, but it doesn't seem to get out of second gear.

Taste: Full bodied with medium+ acidity and silky tannins. The structure is certainly there, but it isn't overpowering with black fruits, bacon fat, black olives, leather, black pepper, and some spice notes.

Overall: This is a gorgeous Clape that has a rustic elegance to it. I think I did want more of the savage side that Clape can normally show, but this was still a joy to drink. (3490 views)
Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 5/20/2014: On the nose there is green bean, red berry, ginger, liniment and earth. It is sleek and round in the mouth, without a hair out of place. It is remarkably fresh and finishes with reasonable grip. (3182 views)
Tasted by Hodby on 5/17/2014 & rated 92 points: Medium-dark red; young looking. Energetic mid-life nose. Shows some of everything true for both an old fashioned Cornas and a little bit of a Cote Rotie's floral naturel: olive brine, menthol, tar, roast beef, red cherry, hyper-ripe plum, black pepper, violets, red bell pepper. Wonderfully complex. Medium-light tannin, balanced acidity. Easy to drink, open for business, and balanced to suggest safe keeping for another ten years age too. Medium finish. Bottle #4 of six. (3323 views)
Tasted by thewineoceros on 1/15/2014 & rated 92 points: Cornas tasting @ Jeroboam Club (Bristol): Impressive nose, focus, complexity, gamey, violets, and spice. This is really text book Syrah, with crushed peppercorn, white pepper, and spices. Slightly drying on the long finish. Will go on for a few years yet. (4466 views)
(3586 views)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
