Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.7 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 108 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Beachfan on 9/13/2020 & rated 91 points: Very pleasing lychee pineapple nose, good balance (I.e. plenty of acid left), and reasonably long finish

Good to the last coravin’ed drop (5 days later) (1207 views)
Tasted by CerveloGuy on 2/22/2020: Has a slight honeyed start with clean fruit flavors and nice acidic finish. Save the last bottle to see what it does. (1383 views)
Tasted by DHJ1968 on 5/30/2019: Wine is fully mature. Honey over lemon, still with a late ginger finish. This is now burnished, unctuous and extremely long. Acid still supports the structure and subtle, typical oxidative notes add smoky nuance. Une Grande Dame! (1674 views)
Tasted by lolo66 on 1/6/2018: very nice. nose of anise and then stone fruits and pit. very nice body. seems like at peak. excellent. (2139 views)
Tasted by jlm on 10/12/2014: Straw colored. Lovely spiced apple aromas, with a touch of nutty oxidized notes too boot. Relaxed and effortless on the palate, with just enough fruit to keep it buoyant and just enough acidity to keep it moving. Impeccable balance and delicious flavors. Wish I had lots more. (4106 views)
Tasted by cos82 on 8/10/2014 & rated 87 points: Very orange in color raising oxidation concerns, but did not appear on nose and palate. Steely minerality on the nose. More of the same on the palate. Fruit flavors missing. If my bottle is any indication, I would drink these up. (3647 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 8/9/2014 & rated 91 points: My last bottle of these. Truthfully, if I had more confidence in them not being oxidized, I would have waited even longer. No harm. This bottle was in great shape and drank quite well. Light golden in color. The nose is gorgeous. Really pretty with lemons, oranges, orange peel, some sea air too. On the palate, not quite as good. Not as complex as I hoped but still some complexity. Orange peel and lemons. Slightly bitter in an innocuous way. Nice finish. This dry as a bone. One of those wines I drank a lot of and now I am done. Good bye old friends. (3543 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 2/22/2014 & rated 92 points: Some different wines with friends (Sharon and Sashi's): I was quite worried about this one with all of the bad bottles reported. Luckily, the bottle was pristine (purchased on release). Very light golden in color. The nose has pears, lemons, wax and sea air. Complex and delightful. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, this is bone dry with citrus, pears, and chalk. Silky texture. Layered complexity. Exactly wine the hoped it would be. (4193 views)
Tasted by Rieslingfan on 11/25/2013 flawed bottle: Corked (3586 views)
Tasted by alamoave on 9/13/2012 & rated 91 points: Tremendous, honey over stones. Won't get better. (2567 views)
Tasted by Vino Me on 7/16/2012 & rated 88 points: Third time I have had this wine. Opened on Bastille day to see how this wine was doing at 10 years of age. From the great 2002 vintage in the Loire Valley. This wine has put on some weight since the last time I had it 5 years ago. Notes of lemon oil, minerals and some vegetal nuances. I liked this better when it was younger and more vibrant. 88 points. (2674 views)
Tasted by Winekrupt on 6/24/2012 & rated 88 points: Wet stone, oily citrus nose, with a hint of bruised apple coming on. On the palate the initail attack was very good, but slipped away quite quickly- the biggest set back to an otherwise interesting wine. Minerality, anise, citronella on the palate... but the fast fading presence of the wine suggests its time to drink up. (2580 views)
Tasted by DHJ1968 on 5/4/2012: From memory - this was consistent with prior notes, drinking well with miles to go. (2312 views)
Tasted by jlm on 4/3/2012: Compared to a recent bottle of the '04, this showed more obvious fruit characteristics, including a sort of overripe apple note on the nose, and considerably more flesh on the palate. It still has cutting acidity and that rock-solid mouthfeel of Savennieres, but it's in many ways a less interesting wine than the '04, though perhaps it just needs more time to work through its fruit. (2397 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 12/17/2011 & rated 91 points: Light medium chartreuse color; lightly savory, celery, mineral nose; tart celery, mineral, light white pepper, citrus oil palate; medium-plus finish 91+ points (952 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 12/16/2011 & rated 89 points: Welcoming Craig C to DC - Marks duckhouse Part 2 (Marks duckhouse, Falls Church, Va): This bottle is very fresh and has almost Sauvignon Blanc like grassiness. Nice minerality and acidity but the fruit expression seem straightforward without much nuance. A nice wine to accompany seafood. (2785 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 8/30/2011 & rated 90 points: Golden color - a sort of darkish maturing yellow. Aromas of apricot, honey, lemon, spice and, after a while, a hint of lychee develops. Similar flavors in the mouth. Nice acid base and structure. A pleasant medium finish. Pairs fairly well with Thai food: a sea food entree and Pad Tai rice noodles with chicken and shrimp.. (2252 views)
Tasted by blancdeblancs on 8/1/2011: dark, straw color somewhere between apricot and tangerine, some damp earth. gorgeous otp, tinges of honey, still has tons of acidity! quite lively, beautiful minerality, worth the wait. (1894 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 5/4/2011 & rated 91 points: Dallas 2nd Wednesday Group - Dinner with guest chef Sharon Hage (Urbano Cafe, Dallas, Texas): WIML91

Tasted non blind at a wine dinner.

Light yellow to yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of orange foam, kumquat, lychee and a bit of brown spice. Flavors of apricot core, kumquat and minerals. Medium acidity, medium body. Drink or hold. (3296 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 3/14/2011 & rated 92 points: Peaches, apricot, honey, and spice. Good balance. Nice finish. Very nice pairing with ahi tuna cooked in a lemon grass and pineapple sauce. (2712 views)
Tasted by Colima74 on 3/12/2011 & rated 91 points: Opens a little flabby, but with some air time this gains some balance, with acidity making its way forward. Hint of anise, medium weight. Good stuff. (2693 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 3/6/2011: Decanted, which seems to be the way to go with this wine; v. v. nice -- good acidity, fine structure; great with lobster ravioli in a light red sauce (2630 views)
Tasted by Wicker Parker on 1/18/2011: More linear than I was expecting, although some complexity emerged by the third night, and the finish grew quite long. I'll age my last bottle further, given Baumard's reductive style of winemaking, but this will never be one of the more interesting Savennières. (2808 views)
Tasted by DHJ1968 on 10/29/2010: Consistent with prior notes, another great bottle of this still-developing wine. (2924 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 7/29/2010: My previous experiences with this wine have been inconsistent, with both tasty, developing examples as well as tinned-fruit nastiness. This bottle indeed initially some unpleasant tinned fruit and asparagus aromas, but these dissipated enough after an hour or so for the more pleasant elements to take over - fresh and baked apple fruit and just a hint of fresh wildflower honey. The wine held up surprisingly well; half the bottle was still quite enjoyable the next day.
Perhaps it's just another example of chenin blanc's strikingly nonlinear aging profile, but I am also finding an anecdotal correlation between chenin blanc raised in stainless and these tinned fruit aromas that I so dislike. And finally, this is neither here nor there, as I usually like Baumard's savennieres, but for me it's just not the most distinctive expression of dry chenin blanc. (3013 views)

Savennières

Savennières is a small, relatively well-known Loire Valley region producing wines made from the chenin blanc grape.

They are not conventionally fruity, and benefit from extensive aging.

Savennieres often have smells like white truffles and animal notes, even when young. They can last for a tremendous amount of time, and some people mistake the evolved aromas after 10-20 years with oxidization, but I have yet to taste an oxidised chenin blanc, since the amount and type of acidity (many g/l and tartaric) preserve the fruit in a much more effective way than e.g. chardonnay.
