Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.9 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 28 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by mercurius on 5/13/2019: Completely opaque with no bricking. Some dark fruit, creme de cassis, and barnyard/straw on the nose. Great mid palate and a long lingering finish. Just a touch of heat for the 15% abv. Some prominent tannins and oak are noticeable but it certainly isn't closed down. Still much room for improvement with oak integrating and tannins resolving but think it has the balance to do so. Perfect pairing with New Zealand lamb. (1053 views)
Tasted by valecnik on 4/27/2019: Well here I am, eight years after purchasing this wine from the winery tasting room, and I'm truly baffled as to why I bought it. It cannot possibly have tasted this way back then. It's heavy and dark as expected, but there is a massive sour/salty/savory note that just steamrolls over everything else. I think it may actually be flawed, but I've never encountered a flaw like this. Just bizarre. (925 views)
Tasted by CRAUBER4242 on 6/25/2016: Closed down so I shouldn't score it. Showed decent but not like it should. (2023 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 4/17/2016 & rated 92 points: Not a superstar but very nice. Full bodied, still needs to have some air. Black and purple fruit. On the overwhelming side but mellows with time. Very long finish. (2041 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 2/10/2016 & rated 91 points: This is a teeth staining wine. Opaque purple. Nice nose. Very bold black and purple fruit. Integrated and complex. 30 second finish. Leaves your tongue black in the morning. Not for the faint of heart, but a good example of new world PS. (2170 views)
Tasted by CRAUBER4242 on 9/28/2015 & rated 92 points: Needed 30+ minutes to fully open but it was darn good on opening.

A great nose of blueberries, blackberry, churned earth and spice leading to a full mouth with nice tannin. A tasty wine with nice mouthfeel. (1767 views)
Tasted by jeffal66 on 4/20/2015 & rated 92 points: Intense and concentrated. Dark, brooding fruit, earth, spice, menthol, tartness. Vegetable hints, medium tannins. Complex and brooding. A big, excellent steak wine with good length. Plenty of life left. (2008 views)
Tasted by BobMilton on 11/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Good fruit, full bodied. (1428 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 2/8/2014 & rated 92 points: Wow, inky, firm, structured, tannic, very dry, tight blueberries, aging very well, and maturing slowly, this was my last bottle. Wished I had waited another year, this is starting to meld nicely. (2601 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 9/16/2013 & rated 91 points: Aging well, consistent with previous bottle, deep dark violet, ripe tannins. Blackberry aromas, blueberry palate. Lengthy finish. (2540 views)
Tasted by Dagalaifus on 11/17/2012 & rated 88 points: Inky purple. On the palate, blackberry and blueberry jam with oak and vanilla notes. Lacking the weight and tannic backbone I have come to expect from a young Petite Sirah. Nothing special. (2688 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 11/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Deep purple, inky, with flavors of blackberries and blueberries. Expected more depth and weight...but still quite good. Will give my remaining bottles more time. (2496 views)
Tasted by Mootsie on 3/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Very dark, almost opaque. Black fruits, licorice, and spice. Drying tannins and slightly tart, but very drinkable now.
Day 2 update. Flat. All the fruit is gone. Not much there. Watery would be a good description. (2274 views)
Tasted by WineLoversLA on 11/16/2011 & rated 95 points: Scrumptious, cedar and chocolate (2050 views)
Tasted by jdabrowski1027 on 7/5/2011: Santa Barbara Trip - July 2011; 7/1/2011-7/6/2011: Tasted at the winery in SB. Really dark & bold wine! The nose is ominous black fruits. Getting a good amount of asphalt on the palate, with dusty & drying tannins. Did I mention this was a dark wine? Good stuff. (2809 views)
Tasted by Redguy on 5/21/2011: Tasting room pour. Typical saturated dark glass staining purple. Full bodied, but very tight. Bright bing cherries and blackberry liquor in this tannic beast though quite well balanced. Big and burley but with manners. This should become quite good with time. 89-90ish today (1826 views)
Tasted by Jdubb on 4/24/2011 & rated 90 points: Very smooth with rich texture that worked nicely with our Easter meal. Highly recommend. (1808 views)
Tasted by Mootsie on 4/7/2011 & rated 90 points: Black in color with a tinge of red around the edges. One of the deeper color wines I can remember. Pretty tight at first with big tanins and oak evident. The deep mineral, dark berry, spicy tones slowly emerged. Ripe and young with a little heat showing, but actually pretty enjoyable right now. A little time in the glass and it really shines, I'll let the others sleep, but I wanted to see where this wine was at now. Glad I did. (1689 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 10/8/2010 & rated 90 points: Black purple inky color; Giant jammy blackberry and logan berry and oolalaberry; in fact, this is a berry puree, or jam with a peanut butter consistency; still, I was intrigued! Eucalyptus notes melted with intense fruit, and vanilla oak in the mouth; This makes for a deep, rich, blackberry pie. Thick, fruity, and good. Not really my style, but a success for this petite sirah. (781 views)

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY | BALLARD CANYON AVA

Our Larner Vineyard Syrah is planted in deep, sandy soils over a layer of chalk. Co-fermented with a touch of Viognier and 70% whole-clusters, this wine effortlessly balances elegance and power. Blue and black fruits jump of the glass, and are supported by tar, pepper and graphite. The palate shows more blackberry, green olive and baking spice. Finishes with a long mineral-laden complexity. Expect this wine to develop and gain complexity over the coming decade, and age well into the next.

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
