Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 83 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by R1c4rd0 on 4/12/2023 & rated 92 points: Amazingly enjoyable 14-year-old Syrah with an expressive aroma of ripe dark fruit, earth, dried meat, floral notes, sweet spices, a whiff of vanilla and just a hint of oak. There is concentration and richness but also balance. Silky texture, ripe tannins and right amount of acidity and freshness. Flavours of ripe plum, black cherry, smoke, well-integrated oak, peppery spice and herbal hints. (235 views)
Tasted by Sour Grapes on 2/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Semi Transparent/Opaque dark red and lightens up towards the edges. No signs of browning on the edges. Blackberry and black cherry on the nose and palate. Also a hint of black pepper on the palate. At this stage this is a medium body wine with medium + tannins and medium acidity - Very balanced. 10+ years has been no problem for this wine. Impressive (247 views)
Tasted by pmk on 4/29/2020 & rated 90 points: Lovely fruit forward CA syrah - not as extracted and intense as the syrahs from Tensly, well balanced with nice acidity to hold it together and balanced fruit. Drink NOW (909 views)
Tasted by pmk on 4/7/2020 & rated 90 points: ready to drink. excellent, but not as concentrated and intense as Tensley Syrahs. (816 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 9/2/2019: Drank nicely over 2 nights. Black in the glass- looked young. Lavender, saline, figs and blackberry on nose with similar flavor profile on palate. Medium body, high acidity and integrated tannins. Very long finish. 93+/- (868 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 7/30/2018 & rated 93 points: This bottle was more consistent with my note from 1/2012 vs. my most recent tasting.

Paired with pork spare ribs (smoked). On nose, meat, blackberry, saline, blueberry. Dark red fruits, blackberry & saline flavor profile on palate - full body, medium+ acidity, medium tannins and very long finish. Really enjoyed. Fell apart overnight so will drink remaining bottle in next 1-3 years. 93 tonight. (1090 views)
Tasted by brasstab on 1/5/2018 & rated 92 points: Always amazed at how beautiful this wine becomes when you give it time in the bottle. This was the classic boxer's fist in a velvet glove - so much power, equaled only by its grace. I'm bummed I had it with appetizers and tapas and not a big fat steak. (1189 views)
Tasted by valecnik on 12/25/2017 & rated 92 points: Drank over two days. The liveliness and juiciness of the fruit upon first pour was incredible. Still so fresh, with a ton of energy. It moved more into secondary earthy flavors after that, but the tannic grip was always present. I held this for six and a half years, and it could easily have gone longer. Impressive. (860 views)
Tasted by ddmhunter on 3/3/2017 & rated 91 points: Has matured and drinking very well. Dark fruit and slightly earthy on the palate. The longer it sat the more it developed and the finish has really integrated as the tannins have mellowed. (1314 views)
Tasted by EvanJB on 7/8/2016: Meaty, mature (1506 views)
Tasted by Bowmanifesto on 5/27/2016 & rated 90 points: Superb Syrah, as I've come to expect from Stolpman. (1365 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 5/10/2016: Paired with ribs. Didn't take notes - great nose (violets / lavender / saline / black cherry). Not as good as last time but a nice bottle of wine.

91+/- (1318 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 2/26/2016 & rated 90 points: Nice maturing Cali syrah. Dark fruited, plush, smooth but with good stuffing. Easy to drink right out of the bottle and improves by day #2. Nice secondary notes and minerality. Great QPR (1489 views)
Tasted by patsox on 1/20/2015 & rated 92 points: The ideal CA Syrah. (1723 views)
Tasted by markcic on 11/7/2014 & rated 89 points: It has been a year since I tried a bottle, we pnp'd while baking, dark fruit on the nose, the palate is dominated by ripe plums, dark berries and spice. a nice finish. Decanting is definitely in order for this wine as time brings out the flavors. (1523 views)
Tasted by jwalker1140 on 11/2/2014 flawed bottle: Same as previous bottle. WTF?!? I choked the last one down, but I had to dump this one down the drain after two sips. The 2008 bottling was great. Not sure what happened to these 2009s. (1735 views)
Tasted by jwalker1140 on 10/4/2014 flawed bottle: Something went wrong. Very hazy, almost milky. Nose was OK-ish, but the taste was tart and totally bottomed out after ~1 second. No bueno. (1677 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 8/10/2014 flawed bottle: Corked (1590 views)
Tasted by whudock on 5/18/2014 & rated 91 points: drinking very well right now, but it will get better with time. Deep and aggressive with very nuanced elements (1266 views)
Tasted by ddsolomon2000 on 4/5/2014 & rated 90 points: Needs time to open up. Definitely not the first wine to drink. It's going thru a concentration phase and becoming very rich, deep color and strong tannins. Don't make a conclusion on the first taste. This is a big wine and it needs air time. (1261 views)
Tasted by cliffo41 on 2/20/2014 & rated 89 points: Chapulin mentioned a balance between California and Rhone - I can certainly see that. It's an apt comparison though I might say it leans a little more toward the Rhone. Dark opaque red in the glass. Some green / stem undertones. Alcohol heat on the finish with some tannins to wrap it all up. Certainly needs time to open up. If you're looking for a big Cali Syrah with lots of fruit and "new world" personality, this one will disappoint. However, if you're looking for something different - kind of an old-meets-new, this will be of interest. (1359 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 1/10/2014 & rated 91 points: PnP on first day - typical big Stolpman fruit attach - rich and dark on the nose and palate. Well integrated - hint of acidity and tanniins - but smooth. Full body and long finish. Flavor profile is plum, blueberry, blackberry - rish and full throttle. (1405 views)
Tasted by markcic on 10/26/2013 & rated 90 points: PNP'd through an aerator to use for the cheese course, dark fruit on the nose, blueberry and licorice on the palate with a hint of spice, a nice finish. Held up well to some of the more pungent cheeses that we served. (1549 views)
Tasted by jupiter33 on 4/14/2013 & rated 91 points: Another great Stolpman wine. (2120 views)
Tasted by raydawgone on 1/1/2013 & rated 94 points: Pipe smoke and briar patch aromas. Fleshy, grilled game, very Cote-Rotie like. Black raspberry & blueberry liquor with black licorice on long finish. Drank first bottle 6 months ago and second one last week. Suggest holding, since second bottle was drinking much better. The fourth vintage I've purchased of this bottling, and it's always consistently good! (2516 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Central Coast AVA Wikipedia

Santa Ynez Valley

The Santa Ynez Valley AVA is the largest wine sub-region of Santa Barbara County and has the highest concentration of vineyards. The valley runs from east to west, between the Purisima Hills and the San Rafael Mountains in the north, and the Santa Ynez Mountains in the south. Although the valley is open to the Pacific Ocean in the west, the fact that it is relatively narrow means that limited cool air and fog is funnelled in. Low average rainfall and a very long growing season make the region ideal for quality wine production.

The diverse climates of Santa Ynez Valley mean that a wide array of wines is produced. The cool, western part of the AVA is predominantly planted with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, accompanied by other aromatic white varieties. Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) is able to flourish here, allowing some outstanding dessert wines to be produced in suitable vintages. Further east, the cooling effect of the ocean is lessened as both vineyard elevation and average temperatures increase. This warmer part of Santa Ynez Valley is more suited to fuller-bodied grape varieties, such as Syrah and Merlot.
more ...s expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive, while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhone blends.
