Community Tasting Notes (average 91 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 214 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rgentile on 12/6/2022 & rated 92 points: Small pour. The nose has some dark fruit, cedar and cigar box. The palate was filled more bright reddish fruit and some cedar notes. At peak and very pretty. Enjoy! (911 views)
Tasted by bilgepump100 on 11/2/2022 & rated 93 points: Cherries, plums, chocolate, eucalyptus. Balanced alcohol and acidity. (881 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 7/12/2021 & rated 91 points: This wine has aged nicely. The nose is full of prunes, chocolate, and mint. The wine is still quite tannic, with comparatively light fleshy fruit weight. I feel that while the tannins are still oversized for this wine, the flavors are very advanced (not a hint of freshness), so I definitely recommend drinking now. (1847 views)
Tasted by BarryJT on 4/9/2020 flawed bottle: Very acidic (2346 views)
Tasted by Thomas B on 2/23/2020 & rated 89 points: Decanted about an hour before dinner, a nice grilled steak.
Dark purple in the glass, average nose of dark fruits, a little forest and leather.
Thinner than I recalled without the big mouthfeel typical of Groth & Napa cabs.
Did I wait too long? (2252 views)
Tasted by eyouman on 8/11/2019 & rated 91 points: Fruity. Full bodied. Nice finish. (2088 views)
Tasted by vpoms on 5/25/2019 & rated 88 points: Clear deep ruby color. Clean nose of pronounced intensity with aromas stewed fruit, plums, cured meat, leather, dark chocolate, cedar. Wine is fully developed. On the palate it is dry with medium plus acidity, medium tannins, high alcohol l, medium minus body, medium plus flavor intensity of prunes, dried blackberries, game, meat. Finish is medium minus. Good wine. Drink now, not worth to age any longer (2291 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 3/18/2019: Drank x/3 in Colorado. Still 2 in computer. ?? (1997 views)
Tasted by BrendanNeary on 10/22/2018 & rated 92 points: Beautiful acidity in this wine (Medium). Medium nose of Black fruit (Blackberry, black cherry, Black plum), Tannins are soft and well integrated. Some aging characteristics of Lead pencil, leather and stewed fruit. Finish was long with some hint of pepper on the backend. Overall - this wine is very good and has aged beautifully. That said, I would drink now, I don't think it can get any better and may start losing that acid. (1885 views)
Tasted by SCosgrove on 9/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Lost something over the last few years. Didn't turn out as nice as I hoped. Not a great year (1851 views)
Tasted by galewskj on 9/15/2018: Overall note from a Groth tasting, presented by the winery at the Yacht Club in Lillydale. The pours were small, but sufficient to understand each wine.
2013 Groth Oakville Cabernet Sauvignonn – This comes across as big and a bit green. This seems quite young, is quite simple, and got me thinking that they better age well to justify the price. Impression - 88
2014 Groth Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon – This is a step up from the regular cabernet. At least there is some interest. Full bodied with spice, dark fruit, earth and chocolate. I still don’t get the price tag though. Impression - 89.
2008 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – This wine was boring and tired. This wine does not taste like it is meant to age, as it should be singing right now. Impression - 87
2009 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – A slightly different flavor profile from the 2008, but also dull and tired. I should have asked the presenters if they decanted and how long. This was either over decanted or is not aging well. Impression - 87
2010 Groth Cabernet Sauvignon – Ok, this tastes like an acceptable cabernet. Our discussion at the table was that it just tastes “cabby”, and I would expect more from Napa and this producer. Impression - 88 (1678 views)
Tasted by Steve Baxter on 7/8/2018 & rated 93 points: Outstanding. Berries, tannins have mellowed nicely. Drink up if you have this. (1894 views)
Tasted by SpeedyPete on 1/6/2018 & rated 93 points: The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. There is no sediment in the bottle. It smells like mineral, stoniness, blackberry and lead pencil. It tastes like forest floor and blackberry. The body is medium/full. The wine has juicy texture. The wine finishes long. The wine has medium acidity. (2289 views)
Tasted by Ortiz Brown on 11/26/2017 & rated 91 points: P&P. Medium to dark purple in the glass. The nose is big, forward, and pretty with ripe blue fruit, cassis, and a hint of oak. On the palate the fruit is deep if a bit restrained but present and enjoyable, with flavors of blueberry and plum, with cassis, nutmeg, and a bit of oak that’s not overwhelming at all. Tannins are plush, coating the entire palate through the finish with a bit of acidity lending some structure that, IMHO, will allow this wine to age another 2-3 years. (2080 views)
Tasted by CWilliam on 8/28/2017: Last of 3 bottles stored in a cool cellar since purchase in 2012.

Consistent with last tasting in 5/2014 "Black cherry, red currants, plum on nose. On palate, medium body, medium acidity, long finish with nice drying tannins. Flavor profile on palate similar to the nose."

This wine has aged well but clearly at peak. Didn't note a score but it paired grilled with Grilled Filet Mignon. (2515 views)
Tasted by RayT on 6/4/2017 & rated 90 points: Garnet in color. Decanted for an hour which was a mistake. Drank better as a pop and pour. I drank this over a 2 hour period. Originally had a decent nose. As time went on the nose became muted and with that the mid palate thinned out and the finish shortened. I have drank the 2008, 2010, and 2012 Groth cabernet and I am a fan. I drank this 3 years ago and it was much better then. I had the wine manager at the Newport Beach Vons tell me that you should consume California cab in under 8 years. While that might not be true of a mountain or reserve cab, I drank two 2007's and a 2008 this week and all seemed a couple years past there prime. Drink this wine now. (3327 views)
Tasted by Naso on 1/14/2017 & rated 89 points: Very easy drinking but not complex can - drinking nicely right now (3101 views)
Tasted by djhay on 11/6/2016: for self (2955 views)
Tasted by ewsds on 7/4/2016 & rated 91 points: Nice on day 1; better on day 2. Classic Cabernet flavors, with solid structure and a very nice finish. Bravo. (3708 views)
Tasted by Deux Chevaux on 6/6/2016: Mindmuse's note below is quite accurate for us. Balanced, very pleasant over three nights -- although showing little development -- and with a decent finish. (3232 views)
Tasted by ToniTony on 6/6/2016 & rated 90 points: Great taste and structure; smooth and fruity! (2692 views)
Tasted by rsed on 5/29/2016 & rated 88 points: not all that good, ok but on the way out (2284 views)
Tasted by MindMuse on 2/21/2016 & rated 91 points: Very sound and pleasing Cab. Had decanted a couple of hours. Cassis, cedar, smoke and herbs. Bordeaux-esque first night. Revisted last five ounces night three when it was good, but less integrated than night one. 91-92 (2612 views)
Tasted by tewks on 12/25/2015 & rated 88 points: not a bad cab, but lacked the depth previous vintages have enjoyed. not powerful. good nose, smooth enough, but was hoping for more. decent wine but not one to serve if you are trying to impress. (2337 views)
Tasted by jimmyrice14 on 6/22/2015 & rated 92 points: Drinking great...very smooth, balanced fruit. (3462 views)

Groth

Producer website

Dennis and Judy Groth purchased the 121 acre Oakcross Vineyard in the Oakville appellation in 1981. The vineyard was originally owned by Justin Meyer and Ray Duncan who planted the estate with some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon vines and which they included in their wines from the 1970s vintages. In 1985, after the Groths moved permanently to the Napa Valley, Groth Winery was founded and began producing what have become some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignons coming from the Napa Valley. Groth's 1985 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon received the distinction of a 100 point rating from Robert Parker which launched the label into the list of top wineries in Napa. Dennis Groth has served as President of the Napa Valley Vintners Association and Chairman of the Wine Institute and continues to produce award-winning, highly rated Cabernets.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
