Tasted by texaswinelover on 11/15/2022: Caught this is a great place tonight, fruit pure and clean. The thing I really liked was….the sweet quality of the fruit. Just delicious. (666 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 6/9/2020 & rated 91 points: PnP and drank over two nights. No detailed notes. Still huge. Dark, rich. Two more bottles, and I’m in now hurry. (1010 views)
Tasted by rldixon on 5/16/2020 & rated 91 points: Consumed in a series of Carlisle Zins, these are my last bottles:

1. 2008 Lingenfelder
2. 2008 Sonoma County
3. 2007 Sonoma County
4. 2007 Papera Ranch
5. 2007 Montafi Ranch
6. 2009 Montafi Ranch
7. 2009 Gold Mine Ranch

While still delicious, this version is lighter in color, weight, and flavor than the previous Zins in this series. Consumed over two nights. Heavy sediment on the cork, with little aroma on opening. This wine took over an hour to open up. Lighter fruit, well balanced with mild acidity and tannins. After a bit, spicy pepper definitely emerged. On the second night, this wine was "rounder" and stood up nicely to the asian chili pasta I craved. (952 views)
Tasted by mdahar on 12/7/2019 & rated 90 points: This is unbalanced and past it prime. Still good but needs to drank (1170 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 8/14/2019 & rated 94 points: This ten year old zin is just delicious. Taking on the elegance of aged zin it was unfortunately my last bottle. If you have these they are in wonderful stage. (1445 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 5/17/2019 & rated 92 points: Drinking well now. Raspberries, blackberries, spice and hints of floral in the nose. Black cherries, blackberries, licorice, and mineral notes in the flavor. Medium to full bodied with a smooth medium to long finish. (1002 views)
Tasted by Ed B on 7/1/2018 & rated 92 points: Decanted thru screen; not necessary, minimal sediment; and drank over next two hours. No detailed notes. Drinking very well now, but still plenty of life left. (712 views)
Tasted by dsimmons on 4/24/2018 & rated 94 points: Delicious Zin. I love these Carlisles with a bit of age. Adds an elegant note to the fruit forward profile. (1064 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 12/26/2017 & rated 91 points: Excellent wine with a terrific nose. Popped and poured, drank over two hours and as it opened up it really well. Can sit for a bit (780 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 3/15/2017 & rated 90 points: Bright crimson in color. 15.2% ABV. Red and black fruits, cream, milk chocolate and anise on the nose. Medium body with juicy acidity. Pretty delicious Zinfandel but slightly lacking the verve and energy that I typically expect from Carlisle. Cherries, blackberries, iron and white pepper on the palate. Medium length on the finish. The bar is so high for Mike Officer that despite being eminently drinkable this wine falls short of expectations. Drink over the next year or so. (1269 views)
Tasted by carendt on 3/12/2017: Recommend to drink now (1021 views)
Tasted by sawira on 6/1/2016 & rated 90 points: Fading more quickly than I thought. Plummy, slightly muddled fruits, less definition than previously, just kind of falling into a melange, without the crisp detail usually found at this house. Still yummy, just not quite in the same league as other Carlisle Zins. Drink up. (1231 views)
Tasted by dougie on 4/9/2016 & rated 92 points: Last bottle. Pop and pour. Thought I might have gone a bit to long on this one. Very simple when first opened. Filled out beautifully over 3 hours. (1131 views)
Tasted by sawira on 3/31/2016 & rated 91 points: Bright, deep red fruits - raspberries and cream. A little extracted compared to other top Officer Zins, this is still the bomb. Drink over the next year or so. (1213 views)
Tasted by andyrowe on 2/21/2016 & rated 90 points: Decanted two hours - black fruit jam and a bit of smoked flesh at the back. Held some over for a day but flat then. I will drink my other bottle this year. (1111 views)
Tasted by dougie on 12/22/2015 & rated 92 points: I need to leave more Carlisle alone so I can drink them with more age. This is just entering its drinking window. Integrated. (1069 views)
Tasted by dougie on 10/19/2015 & rated 92 points: Much improved. (941 views)
Tasted by sawira on 5/3/2015 & rated 88 points: Sour fruited the first day, with significantly more of an upfront acidic flavor profile than other Carlisle Zins. Not so tasty actually, though this settled down to more basic red-fruited goodness by the end of an hour in glass. (1174 views)
Tasted by depdoc on 4/28/2015 & rated 85 points: Far and away my least favorite Carlisle. I normally love all their zins, but this one was disjointed. It was not flawed in the usual sense of the word, but certainly did not fit with the other descriptions listed in this forum. (1094 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 4/25/2015 & rated 92 points: An excellent well balanced zin with bold fruit and integrated tannins. Paired nicely with ribs. (1029 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 3/17/2015 & rated 91 points: I should read my previous notes prior to drinking the next (and last) bottle. Much better day 2, much more of what I was expecting of this zin. (1148 views)
Tasted by snarfglk on 2/14/2015 & rated 91 points: A little disjointed day 1, but came together with air. Nice zin. (1136 views)
Tasted by J @ y H @ c k on 1/16/2015 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured. More spice than fruit but reasonable balance between the two. Very smooth. Cherry and plum fruit. Long nice very smooth finish. Gets better with more air as more fruit appears. Color is very dark, almost black. (1366 views)
Tasted by Matt T on 10/11/2014 & rated 90 points: Balanced, powerful, and rich on day one, but this fell apart a bit on the second day. I might drink this one up sooner rather than later. (1431 views)
Tasted by carendt on 4/6/2014 & rated 93 points: Blossomed on the second day, revealing gorgeous layers of fruit, lip-smacking-acidity, and no hint of alcohol. Should continue to evolve in the bottle. Another very impressive effort from Mike. (2246 views)

2009 Carlisle Zinfandel Gold Mine Ranch

Winemaker Notes: Our first fruit of the vintage! Picked September 12th, the 95-year-old vines yielded a respectable 1.5 tons to the acre. Approximately two percent Carignane was included in the mix. After gently destemming the fruit with only minimal crushing, the must was cold soaked for five days to extract as much goodness as possible prior to fermentation. Sixteen days on the skins. All French oak but only 8% new. Unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting Note: Medium to medium-dark ruby-garnet. Fragrant, perfumed aromas of cherries, red currants, and anise lead to similar flavors on the palate. Succulent and supple on entry with tangy acidity and lively tannins accentuating the iron-like mineral notes so often found in Dry Creek Valley Zinfandels. Really develops on day two, becoming quite harmonious and complete. Easily the best Gold Mine we’ve made to date. Enjoy 2012 through 2018.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
