Community Tasting Notes (average 89.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 153 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oenanthe on 7/31/2023 & rated 93 points: Deep dark red. Opened and poured, instantly wonderful aromas on the nose that screamed Cabernet Sauvignon, deep cassis still hugely fruit-forward after 16 years. Like a left bank Bordeaux but dialled up in intensity rather than restrained and classical, with the focus still on the primary and really good for it. There are fresh herbs along with the blackcurrant, and hints of leather and dust but really these take a back seat. Lovely bottle for a good steak at Hawksmoor Seven Dials. (707 views)
Tasted by Vinumming & Ahhing on 7/6/2023: Bromley Wine Circle goes Ooop North (London) - South Africa (Ariana 2, Kilburn, London): Lifted tobacco nose, someone observes that blind this could be mistaken for Rioja. Have to agree. There's a little mintiness around the red fruited core, a touch of pepper and something meaty as well. Very good. (830 views)
Tasted by king-bing on 7/6/2023: Tasted with the 2008 alongside (which had been opened 3 hours earlier). Quite classic Bordeaux nose of cassis and wood, some leather and library dust. Medium bodied and no evidence of the 14%abv. One cheeky fellow taster suggested it was more reminiscent of Rioja. Some tannin to start but this faded quickly. The 2008 alongside seemed lot younger but these bore a strong sibling resemblance. Rather delicious and squarely in its prime drinking window. The 2008 could do with 3-4 more years. (664 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 1/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Medium garnet. Pronounced nose, fully developed. Dried cassis and plum, blackcurrant leaf, leather, tobacco, cedar, earth. Dry palate, fresh acidity, fine, chalky tannins, full body, savoury tertiary flavours dominate the palate, long finish. Fully mature, outstanding Bordeaux blend, drinking beautifully now, but on a long plateau for several years. Recommended. (778 views)
Tasted by dave747400 on 3/13/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted 2hrs. Beautiful, balanced & fresh. Delicious. (1185 views)
Tasted by Andrewbdc on 3/26/2021 & rated 91 points: Dark garnet, fine but noticeable sediment - needs decanting.
Pronounced nose - dried cassis and plum, blackcurrant leaf, pencil lead, cedar, smoke, savoury, earth. Fully developed.
Dry palate, med acidity, med+ chalky tannins, med alcohol, med+ body, palate similar to the nose, nice mineral edge, long finish.
Classic bordeaux blend, cabernet dominated. Well balanced. Drinking well now and has the structure for a few more years. (1380 views)
Tasted by dave747400 on 12/6/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted 2hrs. With various cheeses & saucisson. Fragrant & full bodied. Savoury with plenty of backbone still - delicious. (1610 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 11/3/2020 & rated 93 points: Not blind

Chalky nose and dusty body. (1856 views)
Tasted by Liskit on 3/30/2019 & rated 94 points: Very expressive nose, lots of pepper and spices, leather, coffee, earthy, balsamic and very little nice volatile acidity. Low to medium acidity, very soft integrated tannins, fruit missing in mid palate, I believe over the top (2748 views)
Tasted by Artmount on 3/15/2019 & rated 92 points: earthy leather (2403 views)
Tasted by cob on 2/16/2019 & rated 91 points: Loved this wine, wish I had bought more. Tossed salad on the nose and palate followed by a streak of charcoal on the finish. Tannins resolved and drinking beautifully. After about an hour the charcoal elements diminished and the lovely green characteristics dominated on all fronts. Excellent. (1950 views)
Tasted by Roughl on 1/20/2019 & rated 88 points: I read in one of the Posts bordeaux meets Loire . The finish was a bit of on this one. (2025 views)
Tasted by red.red.vino on 1/12/2019 & rated 86 points: Started drinking 45 mins in the decanter, it started collapsing at about the 2 hour mark. Struggling with most of the other reviews here.... This is quite a green cabernet, bell pepper, eucalyptus with a touch of smoke and cedar. Smoke passes with time in decanter. Failing to understand the hype, quite one dimensional herbaceous (over fruit) driven cabernet blend. The blend is well balanced I will give it that. Acid is low, tannins soft, finish medium would be generous. Meh. On its way out, last leg of its window, drink now for sure. (1851 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 10/11/2018 & rated 90 points: A ton better than the last time we opened a bottle. Dark garnet red with medium edges. Dark berries on the nose with dark spices and a touch of greenery undertone. Medium tannins (5.5/10) and medium bodied. Well rounded and balanced. Nice complexity on the palate with blackberries, cassis, dried cherries, a touch vegetal, spices, slate and a little toasty. Medium plus finish. Drink till 2020. (1246 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 10/2/2018 & rated 88 points: Something gloriously naive here in the pretty herbal fruit and soft palate that isn't quite old school Bordeaux but a much gentler New World expression of the idiom. (1201 views)
Tasted by dave747400 on 4/20/2018 & rated 93 points: P&P in YYZ. Massive perfumed Cabernet Franc nose, properly eyebrow raising, with an immediate return for a second hit. Juicy and intense in the mouth, big cassis fruit, but not even a hint of jaminess. Perfectly pitched acidity and a gently grainy, tannic, mouth-watering tail. Pauillac meets Loire, with added sunshine. Wonderful. (2363 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 4/15/2018 & rated 89 points: Green pepper, herbs, red and dark fruit on the nose, tobacco. A little thin on the palate, lots of acidity, not very generous. Nice tannic frame and length. Drink or keep. 88-90 (2541 views)
 Tasted by cab blends on 3/13/2018 & rated 91 points: Light dusty chalky nose - N7 T6 B7 F5 (2381 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 3/2/2018 & rated 87 points: Second wine and first red wine of our annual DMV South Africa Tasting. Deep garnet core with brick edges. Layered nose with notes of chalk, dust, cedar, truffles, cherries and red currants. Medium tannins (5/10) and well balanced acidity. Medium bodied with dried cherries, a little stoney, dusty, light savory spices and some twigs on the palate. Medium length finish and well integrated. Drink now. (2109 views)
Tasted by Burgundynick on 2/24/2018 & rated 89 points: It is a bit of a beast. Not my cup of tea as it's too full for me. But it had plenty of fruit to go with it. Drinkable 89 points (1932 views)
Tasted by SvenWine on 7/28/2017 flawed bottle: Corked (2342 views)
Tasted by Twinkles on 3/26/2017 & rated 86 points: Crazy smoke. Uni dimensional. May very well be past its prime. (2718 views)
Tasted by Herkygirl130 on 2/28/2017 flawed bottle: Started to turn.... (2937 views)
Tasted by Domfrenette on 2/18/2017: Bombe de fruit. Méga bombe. Avec toute la structure d'un bordelais... mais pour boire en mangeant. Solide même après 10 ans. Pas fatigué. (2827 views)
Tasted by rwpalmer on 2/18/2017 & rated 90 points: Pure, blackcurrant nose. Medium weight. Integrated, elegant wine. (2598 views)

Meerlust

Producer website
Overview
Long recognized for producing world-class wines, Meerlust Estate has been the pride of the Myburgh family since 1756. Today, the traditional dedication to the art of winemaking continues under the guidance of Hannes Myburgh, eighth generation custodian of this seventeenth-century national monument.

Meerlust, with its historic manor house, classic wine cellar, family cemetery, dovecote and bird sanctuary is situated fifteen kilometers south of Stellenbosch, with the blue crescent of False Bay a mere five kilometers away. The Estate is uniquely positioned for the production of wines with exceptional complexity and character. In the summertime, ocean breezes and evening mists roll in from the coast to cool the vineyards. The grapes ripen slowly, thus achieving full, concentrated varietal flavours. The soil consists of predominantly deep, well drained Hutton and Clovelly soil types, affording the vines excellent drought resistance and an ideal substrata for producing concentrated, complex wines.
One hundred and ten hectares are planted with varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Stellenbosch Wine Routes

Stellenbosch

The historical town of Stellenbosch boasts a winemaking tradition which stretches back to the end of the 17th-century.

Stellenbosch is the educational and research centre of the winelands. Stellenbosch University is the only one in South Africa with a viticultural and oenological department, and many of the country's most successful winemakers studied there. The Nietvoorbij Institute of Viticulture and Oenology is also in Stellenbosch and this organisation has one of the most modern experimental wineries in the world and, at its experimental farms (situated in several wine growing districts), important research into new varietals, clones and rootstocks is undertaken.

The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep well-drained soils and diversity of terroirs make this a sought-after viticultural area. The rapidly increasing number of wine estates includes some of the most famous names in Cape wine. The district, with its mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries, produces excellent examples of almost all the noble grape varieties.

The intensively farmed Stellenbosch district has been divided up into several smaller viticultural pockets including Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Bottelary, Devon Valley and Banghoek.
