Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.3 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 13 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Cote d'Or on 8/26/2022: Tasted over 2 hrs
-med red
-dark cherry tar earth
-med+ acidity really bites hard on the finish, med/med- weight pleasant black cherry earth tar, chewy med+ tannins
-has mellowed a bit in the past 7 years though still highly structured without a lot of weight, the structure makes it more soulful than harsh, the fruit seems to be on the verge of developing mature notes, should do well for many more years (478 views)
Tasted by Salute on 4/27/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted -
Translucent burnt orange-red, brownish edges (which scared me...)
But, wine was okay, not corked
Dry, tart cherries with spice and aromatic textures that linger into long finish
Needs to be accompanied by food (no surprise there)
Drink 'em up NOW (777 views)
Tasted by johrav on 12/31/2019 & rated 87 points: Good fruit, medium tannins, needs years to shine. (1106 views)
Tasted by JWG on 8/15/2019 & rated 92 points: Fascinating bit of Piemonte. Described as full nebbiolo, it has quite a different profile from standard nebbiolo or barolo. The nose is dark, dark, dark fruit, but with some green grass and spice. The palate is dark fruit along with a big hit of spice. Chewy, acidic with a mineral backbone, with some definite tannins still showing 12 years in. A delicious drink all around, but I would have never guessed it to be nebbiolo. (1191 views)
Tasted by Cote d'Or on 6/14/2015: PopnPour, tasted over 2 hrs
-mostly opaque dark red with some mild bricking
-reserved cedar tobacco cherry
-med acidity, middle weight with somewhat unyielding high-toned earth tar tobacco and red fruit, med+ tannins
-needs more time or a lot more air (3410 views)
Tasted by quaglia on 11/17/2014 & rated 86 points: AiS Assisi: Dark ruby red, with purple rim. Consistent.
Medium intense at nose, but COMPLEX and fine: wild cherries above alla and spices: Tobacco, pepper, root.
Dry, rounded, Good acidity and medium minerality. Tannins not fully integrated, but gentle. Good body.
Intense, persistent and medium fine (for tannins). Good fruit.
AiS >91/2012 (3711 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 4/1/2014 flawed bottle: Poured through Vinturi into decanter.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, garnet-brown colour.
Initial nose of cardboard, morphing into scents of varnish and lacquer. Big sigh. Underlying nose of red apple.
On the palate, high acidity, high firm tannins, medium+ body, medium+ finish. Even though I think there is cork taint, the fruit is still pretty much alive. Tight and intense red fruits at the core - sweet red cherries and red apples. Bits of spice and tarry earth. Only became a bit more open after pouring back into bottle and through Vinturi again. Although tight, but actually has a feminine character and is quite elegant. Will be better with a few years of age.
But really, the taint spoiled it all on this one. The varnish and lacquer was persistent.

Edit note: I read that nail varnish scents in wine could be due to "volatile acidity" and the ethyl acetate by-product. (3748 views)
Tasted by chatters on 6/22/2013: Piemonte supper (Woollongong): Caramel, vanilla, slightly meaty, slight cherry, spice. Very modern. Not for me. (3936 views)
Tasted by VinLancaster on 10/2/2012 & rated 90 points: The Wines of Azienda Agricola Matteo Correggia (E&R Wine Shop, Portland Oregon): Big and chalky in the nose along with mint and cherry. Likewise on the palate with bold chewy-cherry, loamy earth and tobacco. Effortless on the finish.
Drink 2015++ (4474 views)
Tasted by Mackmoo on 5/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Rather closed nose initially. Probably needs decanting for an hour or two. Nice flavour. Smooth tannins. Long finish. (2137 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 5/3/2012 & rated 88 points: Italian Trio - Matteo Correggia, Cavallotto & Bruno Rocca (Pizzeria Mozza @ MBS): Alcohol :: 14.5%
This is more refine on both nose and palate, well, of course! Softer and quite complex aromas of sweet red cerry and berry fruits blended with earth, pepper and savoriness. Quite feminine and intense on the palate. The tannin is quite firm but there is gorgeous level of fruits concentration as well as ripe acidity backbone to give it the right balance and formed the quite pure mouth feel.Finish is a bit shy though, but promising with its depth and aging potential. 88-90 (3245 views)
Tasted by kgott2 on 8/18/2011 & rated 92 points: excellent balance of fruit and structure. Clearly a young wine with many years to go, but still wonderful flavors or fruit and forest floor. Taste is very different that the nose. more fruit and classic structure in the taste. Nose makes you think the wine is a bit off. (2044 views)

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Alba

Consorzio di Tutela Barolo Barbaresco Alba Langhe e Roero

Alba is a town and comune of Piedmont, Italy, in the province of Cuneo. It is considered the capital of the hilly area of Langhe, and is famous for the white truffle, peach and wine production. Piedmont is in the Northwestern region of Italy, bordering France and Switzerland. Piedmont is predominantly a plain where the water flows from the Swiss and French Alps to form the headwaters of the Po river. The major wine producing areas are in the southern portion of the region in the hills known as the "Langhe". Here the people speak a dialect that is 1/3 French and 2/3 Italian that portrays their historical roots. Their cuisine is one of the most creative and interesting in Italy. Nebbiolo is the King grape here, producing Barolo and Barbaresco. In addition, the Barbera and Dolcetto are the workhorse grapes that produce the largest quantity of wine. Piedmont is predominantly a red wine producing area. There are a few whites made in Piedmont, and the Moscato grape produces a large volume of sweet, semi-sweet and sparkling wines as well.

Roero

Roero DOCG was established in 2005 and includes the following wines:

Roero DOCG: Min 95% Nebbiolo, aged min 20 months with 6 months in barrel, min 12.5% abv.
Roero Riserva DOCG: 100% Nebbiolo, aged min 32 months with 6 months in barrel, min 12.5%abv.
Roero Arneis DOCG: Min 95% Arneis, min 11% abv.
Roero Arneis Spumante DOCG: Min 95% Arneis, can be made at any sweetness level, min 11.5% abv.

Roero is located in the northwest corner of the Langhe region of Piedmont next to the city of Alba in the province of Cuneo. The official winegrowing area runs from the north bank of Tanaro and runs along the river between the areas of Bra and Govone. There are 23 villages in Roero, with Canale being the largest. Each area may contain more or less sandy soils; not all areas are deemed suitable for winemaking.

In 2014, Roero was named a Unesco World Heritage site.

Soils: An ancient sea, called the Golfo Padano, once covered the area of Roero in its entirety. As a result, many fossilized marine creatures and large amounts of sediment are still found in the soils. The soils are primarily sand with limestone mixed in, in certain areas, and/or clay.

Climate: Roero has a cold and temperate climate with harsh, cold winters filled with snow and an unpredictable spring and autumn, which can be very wet. Summer is hot, but can be humid.
