| Community Tasting Notes (average 90.8 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 163 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by Snag One on 1/26/2021 & rated 90 points: Not an over expressive nose, but there were hints of coffee, cocoa, mint and licorice. Soft palate expressing notes of blackberries, blueberries, cedar and toast. Time to drink up the remaining bottles as this wine has peaked. (1499 views) | | Tasted by Mike1369 on 7/5/2020 & rated 88 points: Fruit and body are fading. Wine is definitely on the downhill side. I thought I would get some earthiness or non-fruit flavors coming out but I couldn’t detect any. Nonetheless I still enjoyed the bottle. (1623 views) | | Tasted by hlip on 6/5/2020 & rated 88 points: This bottle was a wee bit past its time. Still good though. (1680 views) | | Tasted by Lax4 on 3/28/2020 & rated 91 points: Great tasting wine. Utilized aerator to bring out the flavor in reduced time. Great finish beginning to end. (1799 views) | | Tasted by AAJR on 1/18/2020 & rated 91 points: PnP'd, still drinking well. Fruit is fading. Medium bodied, smooth & easy to drink. This was my last bottle - Drink Now... (1951 views) | | Tasted by SMZ on 3/8/2019 & rated 91 points: Drinking nicely (1506 views) | | Tasted by B&PBaker on 12/26/2018 & rated 94 points: Excellent. All the good cab features. 94 (1220 views) | | Tasted by danielbleier on 11/16/2018 & rated 91 points: Red and blue berries, clove and smoky oak flavors (1293 views) | | Tasted by AAJR on 7/15/2018 & rated 92 points: Really good, medium bodied smooth with berry flavors - easy to drink & better than the 2013 Joseph Phelps that preceded it. (1588 views) | | Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 6/20/2018: NR as I left in decanter in AM for my wife to put back in bottle at noon... didn't happen so it felt a little tired by the time we had it with guests at 7pm onward... but felt like there was a nice wine in there with a little less air (1499 views) | | Tasted by dalemosier on 2/6/2018 & rated 92 points: We had a taste off with the 2008 BV Latour Reserve against the 2006 Stags Leap the Poetry and 2009 Frank CS. Hands down the BV was the winner with a more integrated, rounded taste and pleasant lingering taste. The Stags' Leap Poetry was a close 2nd and Frank a distant 3rd. (1207 views) | | Tasted by mjm226 on 12/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Medium to full bodied. Fruit up front but not overbearing. Very smooth finish. Plenty of tannins. Paired with beef Wellington - great combo. (1110 views) | | Tasted by AAJR on 11/25/2017 & rated 91 points: Another great showing for this wine - medium to full bodied. Abundant fruit flavors with a little touch of dark chocolate & expresso as well. Only two left out of a case and a half. Dusty tannins & still plenty of fruit, seems to indicate a few more years of cellar life for this wine. (1252 views) | | Tasted by Ceo on 9/16/2017 & rated 92 points: Still nice (1203 views) | | Tasted by Barry Notes on 7/2/2017 & rated 92 points: P/decanted/returned to bottle, 2 hrs. Clear, w/very light fine sediments. Bright med purple color. Light nose. This wine drank well. Very smooth with nice balance/integration, perfect drinking window. Med body/intensity. Typical Napa flavor profile, tannins soft and resolved. You could drink this all night. Mixed fruit profile with an edge to black. Nothing off. Paired well with Prime grade beer steaks. $40 (1441 views) | | Tasted by Lax4 on 4/22/2017 & rated 89 points: Bottle became better and fuller with flavor in time. Should have let it open for longer. Great color and taste, oak. (1417 views) | | Tasted by Vailman on 3/12/2017 & rated 92 points: Pnp. Needed no decanting. Very smooth, integrated tannins, rich fruit, oak, great balance; and great QPR for those who purchased during the recession. (1424 views) | | Tasted by WoodieBayArea on 12/13/2016 & rated 90 points: really well made wine for its style (not my style however), this is very smooth and textured with lots of rich, luxurious oak treatment and big fruit, but not so heavy as to be over-bearing, really nice to sip while having my cigar, I still like more aged/complex/structured, less soft, less thick/rich wines by style... this would be a crowd please at most parties for sure (1737 views) | | Tasted by AAJR on 3/15/2016 & rated 92 points: This wine is drinking really well right now. See previous notes. Great QPR, smooth, nice fruit & balance. Really good.. (2346 views) | | Tasted by moega on 2/19/2016 & rated 91 points: Although the vintages are different, this was better than the 2010 Groth, but not as good as the '09 Venge Silencieux. Still above average and drinking very well right now. (1995 views) | | Tasted by East of Napa on 9/21/2015 & rated 88 points: Not bad but can't hold a candle to toe 2012 reserve (2850 views) | | Tasted by East of Napa on 9/21/2015: Gifted to prestier (2658 views) | | Tasted by Sneaker217 on 8/3/2015: Kids drank, said it was good (2375 views) | | Tasted by AAJR on 5/30/2015 & rated 92 points: PnP'd & consumed over 3 hours. Red berries & floral nose/palate. Fruit forward, medium bodied, lots of fruit. But in short - really enjoyable, silky & fun to drink. Scoring 92 tonight..... (2297 views) | | Tasted by Woodbridge Brad on 1/19/2015 & rated 89 points: I like it, but falls within that amorphous crowd of similar other Napa Valley cabs that are very ripe (overripe), big (flaccid), dark, smokey, meaty. All so very much lacking a sense of place or style or balance that they are quickly boring. Too much for most food other than a charred piece of beef. | Frank Family Vineyards Producer websiteCabernet SauvignonCabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.
Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet SauvignonUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Napa Valley Napa Valley Wineries and Wine (Napa Valley Vintners)Napa ValleySt. Helena |
