Community Tasting Notes (average 92.2 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 72 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Milos on 10/29/2022 & rated 93 points: Deep garnet colour, quite opaque. Forward nose of ripe red fruit, floral and forest floor notes Leather notes in the background. The leather note completely cleaned up over about an hour. The palate showed some tannins and structure a that smoothed out over about an hour as the wine put on weight. Beautiful clean dark red fruit, minerals on the palate leading to an intense long finish. So enjoyable now and I do not think it is getting any better. (802 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 8/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark reddish garnet in color with some clearing at the edges. Full, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blueberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes, spices, tobacco, leather, minerals, herbs a hint of cedar. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, cranberries & plums with spices, dried herbs, minerals & a hint of oak. Lingering smooth finish. Drinks quite well with decanting & airing. At 25 years of age, it is at its peak & I doubt any further development would occur from additional aging. Cork was clean & intact; file was at lower neck. A beautiful, aged Brunello! (948 views)
Tasted by viking92067 on 12/24/2021: over the hill (1410 views)
Tasted by TheIrishSimpleton on 4/8/2021 & rated 89 points: The rating reflects what we most likely missed. There were still hints of dark berries, some leather and some black pepper on the end. Color was still there. Very little dreg, surprisingly. (1773 views)
Tasted by melvinyeowq on 12/17/2020: On the gentle downslope. On the nose it was tertiary, showing damp forest floor. Aged Brunello notes of tobacco and tea leaves, and the fruit was a little too dried and stewed for my liking. (2160 views)
Tasted by N.Bonaparte on 1/31/2020 & rated 93 points: 1 hour in the glass- wow- quintessential aged Brunello- everything you’d expect- perfect balance and a nice finish- certainly in its prime and should hold here for another 3-5 years. No sense in waiting on these. In a great spot now. (1867 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 11/2/2017 & rated 95 points: Amazing. Every ‘97 Brunello I open, I question whether it has held up. Superb balance. No signs of rolling over. Ample fruit, light tannins. (3028 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 10/21/2017 & rated 91 points: This bottle was better than the one I had in February. It was softer and fresher and had better balance. Plenty of ripe red and dark fruits that was not overwhelmed by acidity. Very nice. (2655 views)
Tasted by Fftjr on 8/11/2017 & rated 93 points: Was worried about the age, but corked popped, great nose, full body, some fruit and mellow tannins. A pleasant surprise! (2755 views)
Tasted by IPSE on 3/15/2017: Plummy and ripe. Very, very meaty. Almost bloody. There is a really clear, really attractive savory note to this one. The palate is dark and full. Teriyaki beef. Acid is still powerful for the richness on the palate. Really tasty. (2999 views)
Tasted by CHINACAT on 2/18/2017 & rated 89 points: Dark red color and a bit cloudy. Nice aromas of forest floor. On the palate, ripe dark fruits, a little tired, with plenty of acidity, but the finish was a bit harsh. This bottle seemed a bit out of balance and past its prime. (2672 views)
Tasted by awineo on 2/27/2016 & rated 87 points: This one was done..... Fruit was gone. Nothing left. Not spoiled just gone. (2346 views)
Tasted by Dvogt on 1/19/2016 & rated 94 points: 2 hour decant. Red cherry, plums, mushroom, some forest floor and fully integrated tannins. In a real nice place now and very elegant. Light and subtle, but long, beautiful finish. (2281 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 1/15/2015 & rated 94 points: Still lively and delicious with somewhat more mature fruit and incredibly silky tannins. (2942 views)
Tasted by sunnylea57 on 7/30/2014 flawed bottle: A dead bottle. Bretty nose - lots of barnyard and tired, somewhat maderized fruit. Hoped it would fade, but it hung around all night. Palate was also tired and a little thin. I suppose it was drinkable if you're a masochist. (3301 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 1/23/2014 & rated 91 points: Very good, similar to the last bottle: Medium ruby red. Plum, tobacco, black olive, loam. Medium weight. Velvet tannins. Everything is harmonious and balanced. (3625 views)
Tasted by Milos on 8/17/2013 & rated 94 points: Decanted for about an hour. Deep red colour. Very complex nose, more Bordeaux like than Brunello, with dark red fruit and damp wood. Palate is rich, the acidity lower than typical, soft tannins but still very structured; long finish. The surprise came about an hour and half later; an explosion of perfume of dark red fruit, blackberry, forest floor and violets with full silky silky palate and seamless long finish. (2802 views)
Tasted by La Peste on 4/28/2013 & rated 89 points: Should have decanted for a few hours before dinner. Was a bit tight, but opened up with time. (4073 views)
Tasted by Agauthie on 4/1/2013: Did not decant. Was definitely ready to drink, pleasantly well balanced, lingering taste. (3234 views)
Tasted by JavaMonkey on 2/22/2013 & rated 92 points: Really excellent now. Medium ruby red. Plum, tobacco, black olive, loam. Medium weight. Velvet tannins. Everything is harmonious and balanced. (3024 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 12/31/2012 & rated 94 points: Beautiful bottle of Brunello (3020 views)
Tasted by grapecaesarsghost on 12/9/2012 & rated 98 points: Had this wine for dinner and bought a substitute in case this one past its prime. No need for the substitute as this was one of the best wines I have ever indulged in. Pine and olive scents jumped out of the glass. Integration was perfect and coated the tongue like velvet. Aftertaste was fairly lengthy. I'm guessing still has a few years left but absolutely perfect right now! (3001 views)
Tasted by godx on 7/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Italy 2012 - Lake Como; 7/6/2012-7/7/2012 (Bellagio): Drank at Trattoria San Giacomo in Lake Como. Medium red with some bricking at the rim. Mature and slightly modern nose with notes of vanillin oak, warm red fruits, mushrooms and tobacco. More red fruits and tobacco on the palate with powdery tannins, medium acidity and a clean and pure finish. This is drinking perfectly now as it’s resolved on the palate with maturing fruit and softened structure. Excellent. (2754 views)
Tasted by rfras on 3/30/2012 flawed bottle: What a disappointment the wine was corked. I had babied this wine at 55 degrees in the wine cooler since I brought it from K&L in 2002. (2830 views)
Tasted by Milos on 3/29/2012 & rated 92 points: Mid red colour. Very classic Brunello; dry red cherries, mushroom, violets, forest floor. Tannins surprisingly resolved, great mid -palate and decent finish. In its prime. (2762 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
