Community Tasting Notes (average 93.3 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 159 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Ridgerunner on 3/14/2024 & rated 95 points: I selected this wine because of the 39% Zinfandel in the blend with 38% Syrah, 13% Petite Sirah, and 10% Mourvèdre believing it would make it more accessible. Absolutely beautiful with about a 2-3 hour decant. Alcohol undetectable, tannins resolved, lush, fruit preserved, wonderful floral and mineral notes with a soft and delicate character. (123 views)
Tasted by markcic on 6/1/2023 & rated 94 points: My cousin opened this bottle an hour or to before we arrived. The nose was all fruit. The palate was dark berries, cherry, meats, a touch of to tobacco and a hint is spice leading to a long finish. (606 views)
Tasted by andyrowe on 12/22/2022 & rated 90 points: Definite leather, very active on palate, open four hours before tasting, next day glass a bit less enthused, last glass at four days and wine was tired by that point. Confusing. (715 views)
Tasted by jfkwines on 3/11/2022 & rated 90 points: Decant for 60 minutes. Still very deep purple, I feel the Zin did not show through as much as I expected. Tannins are completely resolved, darker fruit like black berry and plum, chocolate and a slight hint of leather. Paired well with A NY steak.. No reason to hold, drink now (1272 views)
Tasted by peterk on 2/23/2022: Gorgeous! Nicely integrated - smooth and balanced. The alcohol is masked by fruit and spice. (1257 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 9/6/2021 & rated 93 points: Excellent and drinking really well if you like this style of wine. (1647 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 9/2/2021 & rated 93 points: This one spiced up our back to the womb meal. Palate friendly, dark color, good spice from the Zin and smooth with the Syrah. Like it. (1314 views)
Tasted by Jay A on 8/31/2021 & rated 93 points: Tons of black fruit - blackberry, black raspberry, black cherry and black plum. There's some exotic spice and vanilla. This is a big wine, but at this point in its life, it is polished and not too over the top. Drinking very nicely now. (1238 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 7/20/2021 & rated 93 points: The missus went nuts about this wine. Crazy. Out of her mind. She thought one of the best wines in the past year. Rich, full-bodied, lots of fruit, reaching but not over the top, integrated...
Got the offer for the '19s the next day and bought some. (1111 views)
Tasted by davudvl on 7/16/2021 & rated 93 points: My first Saxum. Dark purple in color. The nose of dark fruit hits you without even swirling. I loved it. On the palate it is very flavorful and completely integrated at this point. Very smooth. I left a little in the decanter and finished a glass the next day. It was even better. Had an added hint of spice on the palate the second day. (1017 views)
Tasted by rmarcos on 3/18/2021 & rated 92 points: Huge! Dark purple massive wine (1091 views)
Tasted by Charlie C on 1/12/2021 & rated 94 points: Deep, dark red color. Aromas of chocolate and black cherries. Deep spicy fruit, blackberry, blueberry, roast meats, chocolate. With air it becomes plush with bright berry flavors across the palate. Fine tannins (could stand to soften just a bit more), great acidity and balance. Finishes long and true to the palate. Drink over the next 5 to 7 years, perhaps more. 39% Zinfandel; 38% Syrah; 13% Petite Sirah; 10% Mourvedre. (1206 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 1/10/2021 & rated 94 points: Decanted for 30 minutes. Nose of blackberry, black plum, fig, black tea, anise, bramble and spice. Ripe black fruit, fig, anise, vanilla, underbrush and ripe tannins on the palate. Very long finish with excellent depth. Full bodied. Served with Tuscan pork tenderloin. (1048 views)
Tasted by markcic on 9/17/2020 & rated 96 points: I have not had this wine in almost 6 years and I believe the wine has gotten better with age. At first I was concerned as the cork broke as I was extracting it (strange - I have been drinking Saxum wines for over ten years and never had a cork break and now I have had two in two weeks ) I then decanted through a vinturi and let sit for 5 hours. Then I got a little nervous because the nose was slightly muted. Then I poured some, swirled it and all my fears dissipated. The palate was just alive. Berries, charred meat, figs, tobacco and hints of eucalyptus. Each glass was better. The finish just went on and on and on. I paired it with seared tuna steaks. Just a great bottle of wine - the last of my 09's. (1425 views)
Tasted by MLwine on 8/4/2020 & rated 95 points: This wine has retained its amazing freshness and fruit while gaining in structure and complexity. Like so many of the Saxum wines, it's perfectly balanced. I don't see any signs of it losing fruit or oomph any time soon, but, alas, it's my last bottle, so I'll never know! (1285 views)
Tasted by westywines on 7/25/2020 & rated 93 points: Dark Ruby red color. Delicious. (1045 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 6/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Consistent with previous tasting note. (1101 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 4/5/2020 & rated 92 points: Dense fruit, wonderful berry palate feel and taste, over powering alcohol finish takes away what this wine could be. (1193 views)
Tasted by madmagnum on 4/2/2020 & rated 96 points: Beautiful fruit, rich, complex, meat and leather, blueberry cobbler, wet earth, fantastic finish that goes on and on. Kept getting better and better as we got to the end of the bottle so I upgraded my score. Drink this now! (1116 views)
Tasted by joelbkaplan on 3/18/2020 & rated 90 points: a bold, fantastic nose, smooth and tasty. with great fruit taste. boldness. we wish we had another bottle. (1054 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 12/21/2019 & rated 89 points: Decades of Decadence - "The 9's" (Buellton, CA): Leather, graphite, plum, cassis, earth aromas. Extreme concentration and depth. Showing heat and alcohol. Backwards black fruit and licorice spices. Full rich depth. Shut down, needs time. (1484 views)
Tasted by JonnyG on 12/19/2019 & rated 88 points: Decades of Decadence -- the '9' Edition (Our Favorite Spot in Buellton, CA): I'm clearly in the minority as far as the CT community is concerned, but I thought this was monolithic, dense and hot, with the ripe, confected fruit and evident alcohol failing to show the hallmark complexity I was seeking. Granted, this was enjoyed along some tough, and more elegant, competition, but I still have yet to find that Saxum 'wow' wine, post- the 2007 vintage. (1424 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 12/4/2019 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind. Opened and served immediately. Followed over about 2-3 hours.

Dark garnet to purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of roasted meat, potpourri, candied plums and black berries. Flavors of black currants, dried plums and black cherries. Medium acidity, firm tannin, full bodied. Drink with air or hold. (1228 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 10/4/2019 & rated 94 points: Deep inky color, pop and pour, developed nicely in the glass with a hint of tannins. Rich berry fruit, hidden gem. High alcohol only showing after we drank the Btl. Still has time. (1233 views)
Tasted by rogerr on 9/14/2019 & rated 94 points: Very intriguing wine with great complexity. Needs a decant and/or air. Drinking well now but is still in its youth. (1244 views)

Saxum

Producer website

Justin Smith of Saxum Vineyards is focused on producing Syrah, Grenache, and Mataro based blends from the Willow Creek District of Paso Robles, California. We let our rocky calcareous soils, steep hillsides, and cooling ocean breezes speak through our wines by keeping our yields extremely low, picking fruit at the peak of ripeness, and using a minimalist approach in the cellar. We respect our land and farm everything sustainably without chemical fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides. Because our vine’s roots penetrate deep through the fissures in the calcareous soil irrigation is rarely needed. Production is kept at 5000-6000 cases per year divided between 12 different cuvees, Broken Stones, Heart Stone Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard, James Berry Vineyard White, Booker Vineyards, Rocket Block, Bone Rock, Paderewski Vineyard, G2 Vineyard, Terry Hoage Vineyard, 4hearts Vineyard, and The Hexe.

NOTES FROM JUSTIN:
The Paderewski Vineyard is a beautiful property owned by Bill and Liz Armstrong, the owners of Epoch Estate. It was the site of the legendary vineyard of Ignacy Jan Paderewski. If you are unfamiliar with the life and music of Ignacy, please look into it, he was a fascinating character and brilliant musician. Long story short, we have replanted the original site. We felt a wine coming from the Paderewski Vineyard had to include the original varieties that made it famous, Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, but in a blend that also showcased our beloved Rhone Varietals too. Our wines are never racked off their lees and are bottled unfined and unfiltered.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
