Tasted by Mark van Delft on 3/9/2024 & rated 93 points: Great aged left bank Bordeaux: pencil shaving, tobacco, dry, plum, mushroom, oak, blackberry, leather, medium plus body. Q-event (385 views)
Tasted by bram_epicurien on 3/2/2024 & rated 91 points: Saturday in diessenhofen, first BBQ of the year, pairing with steak - this wine is a bit too light for that. Will go better with pasta or cheese. Cherry, mushrooms, truffle, wet forest floor, vanilla, capsicum, very ample nose. Med acidity, med body, med alcohol, med falvor intensity, med tannins and med finish. Menthol, capsicum, mushroom, espresso, earthiness, like it. Not very ample mouth but enjoyable. Time to drink up though! (399 views)
Tasted by Decanting Queen on 1/27/2024 & rated 91 points: CdB BoG; 1/25/2024-1/27/2024 (Denver): Blind. Lunch. Guessed St Estephe, I think because it was so rustic.
I was surprised at the reveal. Tannins going strong . Lost my notes but for whatever reason this just wasn’t as good as I would have expected or in comparison to the other wines. (1122 views)
Tasted by Collector1855 on 8/1/2023 & rated 94 points: PnP, in very good shape. Beautiful tertiary Medoc aromas with forest floor. Medium bodied, melted tannins. A pleasure, drink up (1750 views)
Tasted by Richard.schmit on 7/5/2023 & rated 89 points: straight froward bordeaux. good balance. littel smooth on the palate. no real exitement (1167 views)
Tasted by JMellet on 12/30/2022 & rated 90 points: Drink now, if it had a “ best “ then it’s past that. (1621 views)
Tasted by mukden on 12/27/2022 & rated 88 points: NO. Earlier score from 2011 rings true. Very mute wine, not sure if it ever really had it. You's know it was Bdx but I would challenge anyone who identifies it as being from a good property. (1495 views)
Tasted by lovemycab on 11/23/2022 & rated 90 points: Fully mature. While this opened up a bit it after some time, it really didn't change much. Overall, not a complex wine, but smooth and enjoyable. (1505 views)
Tasted by astroman on 8/25/2022: Drank from a magnum bottle, PnP. Tobacco dusty with grainy tannins. (1539 views)
Tasted by Tao on 4/20/2022 & rated 91 points: I'm pleased to say this bottle of Pauillac is fully mature, although not showing any kind of complexness, it does deliver, the black currant fruits underneath are pure and made of good quality, a hint of bell pepper, super smooth on the palate and delicious! Cheers! (1967 views)
Tasted by leftbankwine on 4/13/2022 & rated 88 points: Wine was good, but not great, opened up after several hours, but was a little too red cherry tannony...had this 10 years ago, and I was not too impressed this time. Bottle was good, cork was good, but the wine never really got to a supple, smooth meaty taste in my opinion. (1446 views)
Tasted by Juliansi on 1/7/2022 & rated 88 points: Interesting vintage, our "blue" stickered 1998 at this 1990s PC Vertical.. my clear number 1 at the start of our evening, as the tannins were juicy and the barnyard nose whiff quickly disappeared.

The layers were distinctly wonderful and the finish was super long.

Seems in 1998, and the body was not overly powerful and was in fact well balanced, with lovely blackberry vintage notes. The lingering finish was quite fabulous.

However after 3 hours of airtime, it somewhat fell away and was overtaken by 96 & 95! Thus, it ended the evening in a vertical of 6 older vintage PCs.. in third place for me, or mid-table.

Ara Damansara, near KL, Malaysia - 7 Jan 2022 (1362 views)
Tasted by bram_epicurien on 9/17/2021 & rated 89 points: Pairing with a beautiful orzo dish of Yotam ottolenghi. Medium ruby Color. Green capsicum, provincial herbs, white pepper, light touch of earthiness and mushrooms, dried blackberries, mint, on the nose. Med+ acidity, Med body, Med alcohol, Med flavor intensity, Med tannins, Med finish. Quite a mentol mouth, greenness, not a lot of fruitiness and a bit of smoke. Disappointing finish with quite a watery after taste. Like the nose but it is much better than the mouth, and not what we expect from a pontet canet. Still in a fine drinking window but time to consume it. (2222 views)
Tasted by Ital_1970 on 8/14/2021 & rated 88 points: Still enjoyable, but only to food.
Better 5 years ago. (1856 views)
Tasted by The_Cat on 5/16/2021 & rated 91 points: Mot bat for a mediocre year. Deep garnet red with crimson red rims. Closed at the beginning started to sing 1 hour after double decant leather blackberry blueberry dark chocolate fresh brewed coffee medium bodied with nice tannin structure persistent finish. Can easily go another 10 years (2019 views)
Tasted by pilatus88 on 2/20/2021 & rated 91 points: Lovely ruby color with only a beginning of bricking. Leather and wet forest on the nose. Dark cassis, cedar wood, black pepper. Took 2hrs to open up but then beautiful. Long but not overwhelming finish. (2164 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 1/1/2021 & rated 90 points: So pnp this one to pair some fondue,
very intense smell, predominantly tar, leather and licorice,
good grip initially, plums, cassis, graphite, forest floor, tobacco, classic mid bodied showing, claret style, very good during the first two hours, but begins to fade after this time line, low acid then, so in the end I really find this bottle a little flabby........., so due to this bottle drink this one up the next few years without any decant, ***-?, overall around 88- 90, 90 surely at the beginning! (2900 views)
Tasted by igaf on 11/6/2020: Ready, but no hurry. Good, classic, mid-age Pauillac, a bit on austere side. Best on day 3, so should keep quite well. (1849 views)
Tasted by dofzin on 9/5/2020 & rated 89 points: Crimson color, medium legs. Decanted, no sediment. Notes of cedar and black pepper, with some mineral and floral overtones on tasting. Well rounded in the mouth, medium/long finish, low acidity. (1741 views)
Tasted by OttawaB on 8/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Nice balance, typical Bordeaux …. medium acid, medium tannin, medium but declining fruit. Smooth, easy going. Cedar, leather, tobacco flavours emerging. Last bottle. Enjoyable. (1729 views)

Pontet Canet 1998, 21 years old for this Pauillac, classics aromas (cedar, black currant, leather, mint) and what a surprise to find some tanins, vibrant and polished !
A nice bottle! (2919 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 9/23/2018 & rated 87 points: Medium-bodied, old school styled wine with rustic tannins on the palate, coupled with alternating sweet and tart, cranberries, tobacco, cedar and forest notes. At 20 years of age, this is, what it is. Future vintages as you know provide much better tasting experiences. (4364 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 12/19/2017 & rated 92 points: Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #024 Pauillac (By JS): Très Pauillac in the bouquet with dark berries, graphite, cedar, elegant oak, vanilla, leather and some autumn impressions. On the palate dark berries, a firm amount of good acidity, some bell pepper, mild and good tannin with a pleasant bite. Imho the most harmonious wine of the flight. 91 - 92 (4708 views)
Tasted by novie1234 on 7/26/2017 & rated 85 points: Past prime. Opened nicely with a rich but thin bouquet - heavy on dark fruits. Mellowed after an hour to a fault. (4940 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Pauillac

Read more detailed information about Pauillac Looking full onto the river from the earliest days, with an important port activity, traces of which go back to ancient times (shipment of bronze as long ago as 2000 B.C.), Pauillac's life has always been intimately linked to the history of wine. Although port activities were at the root of its prosperity, Pauillac had to wait until the eighteenth century when Bordeaux ceased to hold its privileged position to become a wine port. The town then became the natural outlet for the wine production of neighbouring cantons before reaching its zenith in a period when the vineyards were exceptionally prosperous.

The characteristic of the Pauillac terroir is its exceptional relief: the many undulating ridges make it unique morphologically speaking. Highly favourable conditions facilitate the dissection of the layer of gravel. This thin, Garonne gravel from whose very poverty springs great richness, has an extremely effective natural drainage.

With their velvet red colour with a hint of amber, the wines from the Pauillac appellation, full-bodied and rich in tannin, are vigorous. Powerful when young, their aromas of red fruits (black-currant, raspberry) or flowers (violets, roses, irises) melt with the passing of time into a bouquet which is long in the mouth.
Rich and complex, the wines of Pauillac deserve to be laid down for a little longer.

Production conditions (Decree dated November 14, 1936)

In order to have the right to the Pauillac appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:
- come from the commune of Pauillac and from precisely defined parcels in the communes of Cissac, Saint-Julien, Saint-Estèphe and Saint-Sauveur, "excluding the parcels situated on recent alluvium and sand on impermeable subsoils",
- satisfy precise production conditions : grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).
