Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 21 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wtianseter on 4/7/2013 & rated 82 points: A muddy rose color. The nose was distinctly yeast and some of the Zinfandel berry. Taste surprisingly had no yeast and mostly was fruity berry flavors with a bit of spice. A good wine but I was certainly disapointed in lack of layering and solid finish after having several other wonderful Sobon Zins at only a few dollars more (2875 views)
Tasted by vinovin on 2/3/2013 & rated 87 points: Consistently awesome. Great fruit, spice , and everything nice! This is our house zin! (3000 views)
Tasted by Tim221 on 12/10/2012 & rated 88 points: Blackberry jam, a nice "soda pop" flavor on the end, solid tannins, nice (although a bit light) bouquet. We liked this one.. Amador County Zins are proving to be our favorites.. (3299 views)
Tasted by salkowski on 10/18/2012 & rated 83 points: Overly jammy and sweet, though it mellowed out some with some exposure to air. Not as brambly or complex as better zins, but not bad for the price. (3596 views)
Tasted by THaas on 5/28/2012 & rated 88 points: Good fruit on the nose, with a peppery note. Spicy and raspberry in the mouth, with a nice, smooth finish.

Drink through 2015. (3893 views)
Tasted by Palafo on 2/5/2012 & rated 82 points: Sweet and Nellie for a zin. (1603 views)
Tasted by Palafo on 1/31/2012 & rated 87 points: Fruity, spicey, smooth. (1473 views)

Sobon Estate

Producer website Sobon winery, in the Shenandoah valley of Amador County, is noted for using sustainable farming techniques, minimal sulfites (addition of between 3 and 15 parts per million to the 8 to 12 parts per million that are naturally occurring in wine), and being carbon-negative (they sell carbon offset credits to other industries). The winery was founded in 1977 by Shirley and Leon Sobon, and is now run by their sons, Paul (winemaker and vineyards operation manager) and Robert (business systems manager).

Zinfandel

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
