Tasted by vinolovers on 4/27/2008 & rated 89 points: A bit acidic on the finish, particularly when the bottle was first opened. Hints of lemon, honey, slate with a dash of pear and apple. A nice, not over-oaked, but pushing its limits. (A reminder of how good Chalone chards were). (2678 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 4/23/2008 flawed bottle: Not as bad as the last, but this baby was toast. (2677 views)
Tasted by The Drunken Cyclist on 4/21/2008 flawed bottle: Be afraid, be very afraid. (2666 views)
Tasted by paulst on 1/7/2007 & rated 81 points: Over the hill. (3001 views)
Tasted by whiner on 12/25/2006 & rated 83 points: xmas 06: disappointing has lost flavour. too oaky now (3799 views)
Tasted by vinolovers on 9/23/2006 & rated 90 points: Probably the best bottle from Chalone for 2001. Golden color, nice acidity with a fairly muted nose. Hints of apples, pears, grass and a hint of malolactic. Not oaky! The main improvement is an acidic finish seems to have fallen away which accounts for the slightly higher score than previously. (1508 views)
Tasted by whiner on 8/1/2005 & rated 90 points: golden colour. very light weight in the glass. Not oak or artifical like some cal chardonnays very please apple and tropical flavours and a little bitter finish (10 seconds). Excellent (1959 views)
Tasted by vinolovers on 6/25/2005 & rated 88 points: Opened with a nice color and a muted nose. Not a lot of aroma developed in the bottle. A little bit of apple, pear, toast or oak to taste. A little acidic on the back of the tongue but very smooth. Chalone stopped making the reserve chardonnay by this vintage, but I'm not certain this is an improvement despite what the winemaker says. Also not sure as to how long this will age. (1796 views)
Tasted by bacchus on 6/24/2005 & rated 89 points: i think that i agree with the spectator description and longevity estimates moreso than parker. we had several off system bottles shortly after release which showed more flavor intensity than is currently evident. nevertheless, presently, the wine seems to be showing everything that it has. color is moving toward golden hue. apples and pears are still there. i assume that this wine saw some oak which is where the vanilla chimes in. i would drink this wine sooner rather than later if i had any more. (2098 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 12/7/2004 & rated 90 points: Heritage: Great stuff. Soft oak, toast; great melon and minerals notes; intense nose; appley mouth, smooth silky med. bod; long fruit fin.--goes on and on. (436 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 1/31/2004 & rated 91 points: Heritage: Rich softer toast, int. nose of fig, some bitter, but grt smelling frt--coince?, baked almonds; med. rich mth, lots of glycerin, long fin., complex.***Distinctive limestone-chalky nose. (438 views)
Tasted by jwolf99 on 1/9/2004: floral, perfumed aromas; ripe, hints of green apple, pear, melon; ripe, rich, restrained, soft (1019 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
