| Community Tasting Notes (average 86.1 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 8/20/2017 & rated 88 points: Family Winemaker's 27th Annual Tasting San Francisco, nose of minerals, black fruit, and pepper, same on the palate, medium/big body, tasty, touch simple, and a long finish. (1488 views) | | Tasted by HarveyLarvae on 9/28/2013 & rated 90 points: Really nice complex Zin. Good backbone and spice, fruit forward nose, very easy to drink (3416 views) | | Tasted by MProbst on 2/22/2013: Neutral on this Wine. Good Wine to make Sangria with. (3884 views) | | Tasted by orlypann on 12/8/2012 & rated 90 points: Decanted for 1 hr and it benefited immensely. This muscular Zin, in the same league as Earthquake, will please those who like wines with character and complexity. Fruit and oak well integrated with a lingering spice box finish. Let it blow off its heat and you'll be rewarded. Great QPR at $15. Definite rebuy. (3788 views) | | Tasted by VeniceCalif on 11/21/2012 & rated 87 points: Decanted 90 mins. ahead. Very dark garnet color. Rich nose of black cherry, currant, white pepper, vanilla. Dark fruit leads the flavor profile, with black plums, blueberries, black cherries, in nice depth, along with chocolate notes. Acid balance is toward firmness though, which takes this wine out of the Fruit Bomb realm, though it is certainly rich. Finishes strong, as the richness carries through along with velvety and light but mouth-coating tannins. An extracted style of Amador zin, this wine could stand a few years in the bottle (but the screw cap makes me hesitate to age it). A totally worthy product at an over-perfoming QPR if you like big zins. (3799 views) | | Tasted by JRagsdale on 10/10/2012 & rated 85 points: Very jammy. Nice zin. Raisiny the next day. (2934 views) | | Tasted by tandre3000 on 9/23/2012 & rated 89 points: A really nice wine. Big and jammy with nice fruit. (808 views) | | Tasted by cmr on 4/27/2012 & rated 87 points: BIG BIG Zinfandel. Very strong berry and spice on a jammy palate that really fatigued me very quickly but for some reason was still enjoyable although it was so big I wasn't going back as often as I usually would. (910 views) | | Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/28/2012 & rated 83 points: 2012 ZAP: Grand Tasting and K&L Tasting; 1/20/2012-1/28/2012 (The Concourse, San Francisco, and K&L, Redwood City, California): VA, tart berry, fig nose; tart berry palate, a little hot; medium-plus finish (4120 views) | | Tasted by bestdamncab on 1/28/2012 & rated 88 points: 2012 ZAP-time to prepare for the 25th ZAP Event. nose of dark fruit, cherry jam, and dusty earth, more of the same on the palate, medium body, tasty, touch simple but only $16 Retail medium/long finish. | Sobon Estate Producer website Sobon winery, in the Shenandoah valley of Amador County, is noted for using sustainable farming techniques, minimal sulfites (addition of between 3 and 15 parts per million to the 8 to 12 parts per million that are naturally occurring in wine), and being carbon-negative (they sell carbon offset credits to other industries). The winery was founded in 1977 by Shirley and Leon Sobon, and is now run by their sons, Paul (winemaker and vineyards operation manager) and Robert (business systems manager).Zinfandel ZAP: Zinfandel Advocates & Producers | Varietal character (Appellation America) | Wikipedia-ZinfandelUSAAmerican wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.California2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson Sierra FoothillsAmador |
