Tasted by Morgan1132 on 7/7/2022 & rated 92 points: Dark Red / Purple with some bricking.

Shows more sign of age on the nose than the eye. Meaty, stewed, aged smell. That all blows off a bit after decanting. Nose still shows age with meaty, leathery, smokey notes dominating. Still some herbal notes and prune / raisins.

Was surprised by initial sweet, fruity, plum, berry notes on the palate. That fades into all the secondary notes indicated by the nose pretty quickly. Nice and interesting flavor profile. Lots going on. Texture was a little lean, tannin is present but waning and so the wine does not completely coat the palate or provide velvety texture I look for at the moment.

Drank with braised lamb shanks, a great match. Don't have many reference points for wines of this age or from this part of the world but I really enjoyed this. (843 views)
Tasted by Subtek on 7/9/2021 & rated 91 points: Still a fresh Color with a brown hint. Good balance. Raisins, red cassis good length. A typical mature C9dp (1269 views)
Tasted by raggedy1 on 4/5/2021 & rated 90 points: Pleasantly surprised this bottle had a good balance of acidity to fruit. Not as tired as my previous bottle I scored 87. (1454 views)
Tasted by dbenglis on 7/28/2019 & rated 91 points: Light red, drinkable now. Strawberry. Some tannin. (2041 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 9/29/2018 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured with the Marks last nite. Lovely example of nicely aged CdP. Pale ruby red in color. Moderate nose of red berries, herbs and spices.
Ripe red berries, dried fruit, a bit on the herbal side with some barnyard and a pleasant earthiness. Lovely spices and good length, and some dryness on the finish. Very enjoyable. (2288 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 1/27/2018 & rated 93 points: Light medium red. Very nice red berry fruit backed by some nice earthiness. Later the nose develops some really nice Burgundian style poop. The nose keeps getting better over the next hour or so. Delicious dry berry and herb flavours and a earthy dry finish. (2199 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 10/27/2016: Rule the Rhone; 10/27/2016-11/3/2016 (Northern & Southern Rhone): Also the Centenaire, but didn't see a specific wine for it and this is certainly our label. Ordered off of the wine list at Maison Pic in Valence. Wine started a bit musty and actually was a bit surprising to me. My only other experience with Caillou was very bright red fruits, but this was mostly leather and cigar dominated. Opened and decanted and maybe at the very end there was a bit of fruit that poked it's way through. Wish we'd had time for a longer decant. Enjoyable wine. (4002 views)
 Tasted by J @ y H @ c k on 9/19/2016: LBTG - it was the Centenaire, categorized wrong here. Outstanding wine. (2574 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 7/19/2016 & rated 91 points: Coravin 7/19/16: Clear light ruby; moderately aromatic with red cherry, musk; palate is light bodied, integrated light tannin, medium acid, red cherry fruit; medium finish. Well balanced, mature, pleasant to drink, but not sure it was worth the nearly 2 decades to cellar it. 90-92 (2318 views)
Tasted by raggedy1 on 5/22/2016 & rated 87 points: past its prime. most of the 98 Rhones have not aged well in my experience. If you have them, drink them and don't count on pros drinking windows. (2219 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 3/13/2016 & rated 91 points: Light ruby with minimal bricking; moderately aromatic nose with red cherry, some brambles, slight musk; palate is light to medium bodied, tannins are low and well integrated, alcohol is medium-plus at 14.5%? (bottle says 14%), acid is medium and balanced; finish is medium length. This is nice and enjoyable to drink now, but I'm not sure it was worth the cellar space for 15 years. I will drink my last bottle in the next year. 91-92 (1959 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 1/30/2016 flawed bottle: Badly corked. (1463 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 12/6/2015 & rated 92 points: Garrique, raspberries, strawberries, underbrush and spices. Medium plus finish and really balanced wine. Wonderful value. (1840 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 9/13/2015 & rated 92 points: Light ruby with minimal-moderate bricking; nose has cherry fruit, slight animal musk, slight pine needles; palate is light bodied, integrated tannin with some residual structure, medium acid but still refreshing, some secondary complexity; medium finish. Drinking very well now. 92-93 (1565 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 4/22/2015 & rated 92 points: Fragrant nose of floral, raspberries, perfume and stone. Palate is exceptional and adds a nice element of Garrique. Medium plus finish and drinking well. Really good value. Day 2 showing well. For $25 that I paid for this wine it far exceeds any of the over price Bordeaux wines I sampled last weekend which were grossly overpriced. No more $225 events for me. (1850 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 3/27/2015 flawed bottle: Dinner at Home; 3/27/2015-3/28/2015 (Fremont, CA): Coravin 3/27/15. Pale to medium ruby color; animal nose, red chert fruit, acetone, wood; palate is light to medium bodied, integrated tannins, very ripe red fruit, some alcoholic heat, alcohol through the midpalate and the short finish. This is unbalanced, possibly flawed though possible just poorly made. 80-
Update: I looked at my last note from 2011, and it seems like a different wine. I think this is flawed. (1900 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 1/2/2014 & rated 88 points: Dull clouding med ruby with ambering edges, dusty plum aroma, bitter tannins shut flavors down with yeasty alcohol laden finish following (2624 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 3/28/2013 & rated 88 points: Drinking through my stash I figure the range is 85-90 depending on degree of oxid intrusion; last pm's bottle was on the fresher and brighter end of the scale. (3014 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 3/4/2013 & rated 87 points: Med dull ruby; prunes and tannins and alcohol (3055 views)
Tasted by David J Cooper on 10/5/2012 & rated 93 points: Light red. Great elegant nose, raspberry, cherry, thyme, meat, and mineral. Great medium weight flavours which mirror the nose. The finish seems almost totally resolved but it finishs so elegantly, in a perfect place. (3285 views)
Tasted by Nunwei on 9/29/2012 & rated 90 points: Past prime. Don't decant. Drink now (2967 views)
Tasted by ltadd on 5/1/2012 & rated 96 points: Very nice! Very drinkable, very special (2631 views)
Tasted by Tgood on 12/22/2011 & rated 89 points: dark ruby; roasted plum nose; moderate stiff tannins still yet w/ an alcoholic heat kick in the end (2332 views)
Tasted by aagrawal on 5/1/2011 & rated 92 points: Lovely garnet/reddish-brown color almost like you added cognac to wine; nose fantastically expressive with barnyard/brett, cherries, licorice; palate has great structure and weight- integrated and not overwhelming, cherries, nice balance of acid; juicy well balanced finish, moderate in length. Overall a stellar balanced old world wine showing at early maturity. 92-93
Update: With 1-2 hours of air this wine picks up some nice gamey aromas.
Update: There's some question about whether this wine was borderline corked. I'm leaning towards not, but I can get occasional bits on the nose that disappear quickly. Unclear. Even if it is corked, it is very slight and the wine still shows great fruit. Maybe I'll try another bottle in a couple of months to compare. (2654 views)
Tasted by M&D24 on 2/28/2011: Terrific showing at home with rack of lamb. In a perfect spot right now.. Excellent balance with just the right balance of fruit (dried cherries & leather) and acidity. This, to me, is what Chateauneuf should be; Not an over -extracted point chasing style but rather a well balanced, food friendly wine that truly exemplifies its' origin. Very glad that I have a few left. (3144 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
